blackberry-messenger-android-1

Being a weekend blogger on Phandroid can often feel lonely. The rest of the team is usually out having fun, catching movies, getting drunk or whatever. They are probably making fun of poor old me in their secret Hangouts group that I’m not allowed to be a part of while I toil away, looking for scraps of news here and there. But I do it because I like it, I do it because when I was one of you, I never wanted to wait until Monday. Also, I do it because I kind of need the money.

Every once in a while, though, my job is made easier by a rare weekend announcement or a release. It’s my opportunity to be the star, to be the one all of you rely upon. And today was supposed to be one of those days, with BlackBerry Messenger finally being available for download on Android after years of rumors. I’ve been sitting prepared for nearly seven hours to get the app and get an in-depth review ready, potentially driving thousands to download the app>

And what do you give me in return, BlackBerry? NOTHING! Zilch, nada, just a few tweets asking me and the other few thousand BBM fans celebrating the day they’ll never have to buy another BlackBerry device again to “be patient”. Patient for what, BlackBerry? For you to realize that one of the guys you fired wiped away your apks and all your source code?

Look, I really don’t want to make fun of the company. Despite all their problems, I don’t forget that they played an important role in building the smartphone category years ago, and no company ever manages to create such a loyal following without having gotten something right. Having said that, with nothing but bad news coming out of Waterloo recently, they really needed to get this release right.

Sadly, so far, it has been a complete sham.

More details surface on how Oppo will utilize CyanogenMod

CyanogenMod_Alien

News involving Cyanogen seems to keep surfacing at a frequent pace. After founder Steve Kondik teased the company’s involvement in Oppo’s September 23 event, light shed on their potential plans. An internal conversation revealed that Cyanogen needs to piggyback off of a manufacturer because of the Compatibility Test Suite for Android; therefore, this is why they are likely using Oppo as a launching pad. Once they have a manufacturer to work with, Cyanogen would be able to gain access to Google Apps. Being able to use Google Apps is of course a pivotal part of their next phase.

Google Apps contain the proprietary Google applications that come pre-installed with most android devices. Due to licensing restrictions, these apps cannot come pre-installed with CyanogenMod and must be installed separately. CyanogenMod does not require Google Apps to function properly, however, to take full advantage of the Android system, Google Apps are recommended.

This leads us to believe that Oppo may offer a dual boot system, but Android Police is reporting that consumers could have a choice of ordering the device with either Oppo’s UI or CyanogenMod. We should know more next week.

Also found internally was while Kondik will be attending Oppo’s event in Beijing, Koushik Dutta will be sitting this one out due to visa complications. Instead, Cyanogen will be sending a Chinese citizen to accompany Kondik on the trip.

These are all fake BBM apps — don't download them

Fake BBM apps

Since everyone's asking, yes. There are a bunch of "BBM" apps in Google Play at the moment. Like, a whole pisspot full of them.

None of them is real.

We get that folks are excited about BBM for Android. We are, too But we also need to be a little patient as BlackBerry works out the launch-day kinks and gets the official version rolled out.

That means staying away from these fake apps in Google Play. (Be sure to report them if you have a minute. And, damn it, Google, it can't be that hard to squelch fakers, right?)

KITKAT - Have a seat

We do all kinds of silly things to get our hands on our favorite gadgets, from camping out in front of stores, to starring at phones for an hour while stuntmen set themselves on fire and crash motorbikes around you.

This new promo from Nestle marches on the same idea – take a seat and sit on it until a certain date and hour to win a Nexus 7 (2013). While we're sure contenders didn't see the experience as "having a break", it's still a fun idea and a great marketing ploy.

Rumor has it that the Android 4.4 will debut this October, perhaps around the middle of the month. Maybe some KitKat will make the wait more bearable. At least, that's what Nestle claims.

Apple iPhone 5s vs htc one aa 14

Apple just recently announced the new iPhone 5S, though some argue it doesn’t really bring that many improvements over the iPhone 5. Nonetheless, just how well does this newer model do compared to HTC’s giant, the One? That’ll be up for you to decide. Let’s take a look, shall we?

Here’s our iPhone 5s vs HTC One quick look. In a hurry? Jump straight to the video.

Design and build quality

Much like the HTC One, the iPhone 5S is clad in aluminum, giving it a nice hefty feel. Build quality is great, and as for unique design features it has chamfered edges and the home button is made of laser-cut sapphire crystal with a stainless steel detection ring circling it.

The HTC One also has a nice hefty feel to it. Build quality is fantastic, and with it’s sleek design, the HTC One is a really nice looking device.

Display

The iPhone 5S features the usual 4-inch Retina display with full sRGB standard and widescreen video. It’s capable of 640 x 1,136 resolution, rated at 326ppi.

Apple iPhone 5s vs htc one aa 2

As for the HTC One, we have a 4.7-inch Full HD Super LCD 3 screen, capable of 1,980 x 1,080 resolution, rated at a record breaking 468ppi.

Camera

The iPhone 5S has 8-megapixel optics strapped to its back, featuring f2.2 aperture. It also has a two-LED flash, one cool and white, while the other is warm and amber. This should give more natural tones when taking pics in low light. Finally, the camera has 15% larger active sensor area (1.5microns pixels) compared to the previous generation, iOS 7 optimizations for nicer images (auto image stabilization, new burst mode that takes 10 frames per second) and 720p video recording at 120fps.

In the other corner, we have the HTC One with a 4 UltraPixel rear camera, which features OIS (Optical Image Stabilization). Thanks to Sense 5, you get a host of camera app features, too. This includes things like HDR, Panorama mode, and HTC Zoe, among many other features.

Battery

In the iPhone 5S we have a non-removable Li-Po 1,570 mAh battery, allowing up to 10 hours of battery on LTE and Wi-Fi browsing.

The HTC One’s non-removable battery is a much larger Li-Po 2,300 mAh unit. How much you get out of it really depends on what you’re doing (e.g. media consumption, browsing Facebook, and etc).

Other Specs

The iPhone 5S features a Apple A7 64-bit dual-core chip, clocked at 1.3GHz, which the company claims will offer 40x CPU performance and 56x faster graphics than the original iPhone. It also has 1GB of RAM and will come in 16/32/64GB storage options. Finally, it features a fingerprint scanner, which can be used to unlock the device and for buying stuff on the App Store.

As for the HTC One, you get a quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor, clocked in at 1.7GHz. It has 2GB of RAM and comes in 32GB and 64GB options, however, the latter model is an exclusive through AT&T.

Software

In the iPhone 5S, you get the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 7. It has been pretty much completely redesigned, and it comes with quite a handful of new features, which you can read about here.

Looking at the HTC One, you get Sense 5 atop of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, with rumors of update to 4.3 just around the corner. You can expect to see a handful of preloaded apps from HTC and a few other useful features built in to the OS, such as battery saving options.

Hands-On Video

Wrap Up

For the most part, the iPhone 5S is an impressive device, at least for the OS it’s running. It doesn’t need to be super powerful, as iOS just isn’t as demanding as Android, nor are there apps that will put the device’s specs to the test.

Nonetheless, the HTC One is a fan favorite among Android users, and it has its own strong points, from a larger and nicer screen, to the camera, and powerful speakers.

Either way, both devices are fantastic in their own ways, though we do have to admit, the iPhone 5S hasn’t changed much from its predecessor, which is a bit disappointing, as expectations were quite high for this year’s iPhone refresh.

Thoughts?

Apple iPhone 5s vs Samsung Galaxy S4 aa 13

When it comes to smartphone brands, Samsung and Apple are easily two of the most recognized names in the business. Now that the iPhone 5s has arrived, you might be curious to see how Apple's latest and greatest will stack up against Samsung's trusty Galaxy S4.

With that in mind, let's take a quick look at how the Apple iPhone 5s compares to the Samsung Galaxy S4. In a hurry? The video is at the bottom.

Design and build quality

Ah, the plastic versus “premium” materials debate. It's true, many folks feel that plastic just doesn’t cut it anymore. If you don't like plastic, you're in good company with the iPhone 5s (but not the 5c). The handset features an aluminum shell, chamfered edges, and a home button that is made of sapphire crystal.

In the other corner, we have the Galaxy S4. While the handset may have a polycarbonate chassis, it is still quite a looker and is very durable.

Apple iPhone 5s vs Samsung Galaxy S4 aa 3

In terms of size and weight, the Samsung Galaxy S4 is obviously the bigger of the two, namely because its display is a whole inch larger. The Galaxy S4 is 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm and weighs in at 130 grams. In contrast, the iPhone 5s comes in 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6mm and is only 112 grams.

Display

The iPhone 5s features a 4-inch Retina display, with a resolution of 1136 x 640, rated at 326ppi. In comparison, the Galaxy S4 has a much larger 5-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 1920, and a considerably higher pixel density of 441ppi.

Camera

The Galaxy S4 brings with a it a 13MP camera with a f/2.2 aperture. There's also a BSI, auto focus, digital image stabilization, and tons of special software features to help make your camera experience the best possible on the GS4.

Apple iPhone 5s vs Samsung Galaxy S4 aa 2

On the iPhone 5s you’ll find an 8MP camera with f/2.2 aperture. The camera also features 3X zoom, dual-LED flash and special iOS 7 features such as a new burst mode that takes 10 frames per second.

Battery

Let's not beat around the bush here, the Galaxy S4's removable 2,600 mAh kills the iPhone 5s in terms of battery life. The handset is rated for 17 hours of talk/3G, 15.4 days stand-by time and around 10 hours of browsing/Wi-Fi usage.

The iPhone 5s has a much smaller non-removable 1,570 mAh Li-Po battery that is rated for only 10 hours of talk/3G, 10.4 days standby and around 10 hours browsing/Wi-Fi.

Apple iPhone 5s vs Samsung Galaxy S4 aa 9

Specs

The Apple iPhone 5s is the world's first 64-bit smartphone, featuring a 1.7GHz A7 64-bit dual-core CPU. Beyond that, the phone has a fingerprint scanner, 1GB RAM and 16/32/64GB storage options.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is no longer a spring chicken, but it still packs plenty of punch with its 1.9GHz Snapdragon 600 CPU and Adreno 320 GPU. There's also 2GB RAM, 16/32GB internal storage and microSD support. There might not be a fingerprint scanner, but you do get NFC and a infrared blaster – two features you won't find on the iPhone.

Apple iPhone 5s vs Samsung Galaxy S4 aa 6

Software

The iPhone 5s comes standard with iOS 7 and packs quite a few special features. The redesign also seems to look a bit like Android at first glance.

As for the Galaxy S4? We get Android 4.2 Jelly Bean with Samsung's TouchWiz UI. That means you get the full power of Android, as well as tons of special Samsung apps and features including Smart Pause, S Health, and air gestures.

Hands-on video

Wrap up

What it comes down to here is preference. Sammy fans aren’t going to care much for the iPhone 5s, and vice versa for Apple fans.

Our take? The iPhone 5s is a solid handset, though we wouldn’t go so far as to call it revolutionary or groundbreaking. If you don't mind Apple's locked down approach and the small display, it's a pretty nice phone really.

For those of us that prefer the open nature of Android, the winner in this smartphone battle is pretty clear.
