$250 Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Student Edition Bundle now available for purchase

Posted: 19 Aug 2012 02:37 AM PDT

Samsung on Friday announced a special edition Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 bundle that will retail for $250 and will be available for purchase for two weeks starting with August 19.

The Student Edition Bundle, available from various retailers including Best Buy, Amazon, Costco and others, includes the 7-inch tablet in a "unique white color," but also various accessories such as a keyboard dock and USB adapter that supports USB thumb drives and various peripherals, mice included. The whole package retails for $250, which is $100 less than what purchasing all the parts separately would cost you.

In addition to hardware, the bundle also includes Polaris Office pre-installed, with Samsung apparently interested in making its Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 tablet a great choice for students:

"The education market is a significant priority for Samsung, and we are very pleased to deliver a bundle that is sure to be appealing to just about any student at a very competitive price point," explained Travis Merrill, Director of Marketing, Galaxy Tab, Samsung Electronics America. "A busy student can achieve a PC-like setup in the dorm room, yet still pop the Galaxy Tab 2 out of the dock and slip it into a pocket for usage while on the go. It truly is the smarter way to learn."

The bundle is definitely an interesting choice for Android users that are on the lookout for a budget-friendly tablet. In fact, at $250, the bundle is a great alternative to Google's Nexus 7 or Amazon's Kindle Fire, both currently selling for under $200.

Second Galaxy S3 Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean firmware leaks – I9300XXDLH4 [Download]

Posted: 19 Aug 2012 02:11 AM PDT

A few days ago, we heard that Samsung may rollout the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S3, on August 29, at least for some versions. At the same time, we found out that a test Jelly Bean firmware for the handset has been leaked, and that anyone interested in installing it was able to do so.

But now it looks there's a second Galaxy S3 Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean build out there, version I9300XXDLH4, which can also be flashed to your Galaxy S3 device, if you so desire. The news comes from Sam Mobile, the same publication that got Galaxy S3 Jelly Bean scoops in the recent past.

As always, we'll remind you we don't encourage you to install unofficial ROMs on any Android device, and that you're going to be the only person responsible for whatever happens with your handset or tablet in the process. Advanced users will surely want to test drive the Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy S3, so here's what you need to do in order to get it.

Sam Mobile has obtained firmware I9300XXDLH4, dated August 14, after installing it on one of its Galaxy S3 units, dumping the firmware and repackaging it for public use. Here are flashing instructions as published on the site:

  • Unzip the file
  • Open Odin 3.04 (already included in the firmware package)
  • Restart phone in download mode (Home+power+vol down)
  • Connect phone and wait until you get a yellow sign in Odin
  • Add I9300XXDLH4_I9300OXADLH4_I9300XXLH1_BTU.tar.md5 to PDA
  • Make sure re-partition NOT ticked
  • Start flash, sit back and wait a few minutes.
  • If you encounter any issues with the firmware (Any FC, Bootloop etc)
  • Boot into recovery mode (Home+power+vol up)
  • Choose to wipe/factory reset. (THIS WILL ERASE ALL OF YOUR DATA INCLUDING YOUR INTERNAL SD CARD!)
  • Then choose reboot and you should be good to go!

In addition to Sam Mobile, we also have flashing instructions, alongside download links, from xda-developers, where user Jack Barrett has packaged the Galaxy S3 Jelly Bean latest ROM in a friendlier fashion, just hit the links below for more information.

Are you running Jelly Bean on your Galaxy S3?

RIM to incorporate Android- and WP-inspired features into BlackBerry 10

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 09:37 PM PDT

RIM may have missed the Android ship when it chose to soldier ahead with its QNX-based platform instead of adopt or license Android. However, this doesn’t mean that RIM isn’t getting inspiration from other platforms in its next major release of its BlackBerry OS, Blackberry 10. Information Week reports that the next iteration of the enterprise-focused OS would include a unified approach to displaying contact information.

With BB10′s contact management approach, all details pertaining to a particular contact will be pulled onto a single page, including social networking streams like tweets and Facebook status updates.

BB10 will go a step further, by including enterprise-specific information such as upcoming meetings with that particular contact, as well as recent email messages.

T.A. McCann, who handles development of BB10′s contact management application, says the focus is on productivity. “BlackBerry has always had this heritage of productivity … We are just going to make it better yet again, when we launch BB10,” he said in a statement to Reuters.

A similar feature is also present on Windows Phone, with contact cards in People Hub displaying social network updates. McCann actually has expertise in this field, being the former chief executive of Gist, which was acquired by RIM in early 2011. Gist ran a popular CRM app that pulled in social networking feeds and updates to contact pages and emails, which can help add context to an email or IM conversation. The service has been “sunsetted,” as of this month, though, as the team is focusing on building the BB10 contact mangement app.

RIM hopes that its upcoming BlackBerry 10 OS will help keep the platform relevant among enterprise users — its main clientele. It can be noted that other platforms, like iOS and Android, are increasingly becoming popular among business users and professionals, especially with the popularity of bring-your-own-device (BYOD) programs in the corporate setting.

RIM is also looking into the possibility of licensing its OS to other manufacturers, although a potential partner, Samsung, has already stated it is not interested in running BlackBerry on its smartphones.

With this, RIM has to up the ante, by incorporating their own improvements when they get inspiration from other platforms. It’s not just about the features, but the execution. Oh, and perhaps they should check if these are patented technologies, too.

Florian Mueller listed as the only blogger on the payroll of either Oracle or Google in patent litigation case

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 07:33 PM PDT

Folks, patent litigation is currently one of the more profitable enterprises today, at least if you’re a patent lawyer, one of the plaintiffs, or if your name happens to be Florian Mueller. In an interesting turn of events, Oracle has confirmed Mr. Mueller, a patent blogger who runs FOSS Patents, to have been a paid consultant who had been assisting in looking into “competition issues.”

This issue came into prominence in Oracle’s appeal to the negative ruling against the company’s patent litigation lawsuit against Google. The judge ordered both companies to disclose if they have paid any bloggers or journalists to cover the proceedings or write in their favor. The deadline had been set at noontime of August 17.  So far, only Oracle has admitted to having paid bloggers, although they say it was only in the interest of seeking advice on the said competition issues.

Oracle has retained Florian Mueller, author of the blog FOSS Patents, www.fosspatents.com, as a consultant on competition-related matters, especially relating to standards-essential patents. Oracle notes that Mr. Mueller fully disclosed his relationship with Oracle in a blog posting dated April 18, 2012; that Oracle retained him after he had begun writing about this case; and that he was not retained to write about the case. Mr. Mueller is a frequent critic of Oracle and was a leading advocate against Oracle's acquisition of Sun Microsystems, Inc., which led to Oracle's ownership of Sun’s Java IP portfolio.

In the same breath, however, Oracle notes that Mueller had been a vocal critic of the company in the past, even during his stint as a paid consultant. Mueller, himself, had admitted to being in Oracle’s payroll last April, as well as doing paid consultancy work for Microsoft, another company involved in patent litigation.

Meanwhile, Google said it doesn’t pay anyone to write about their case. “[N]o one on our side paid journalists, bloggers, or other commentators to write about this case,” Google stated in its own filing. However, the search giant sought clarification whether receiving bloggers’ ad revenues from their AdSense program would constitute payment. If such, “it would be extraordinarily difficult and perhaps impossible” to identify everyone who was compensated this way.

According to the Verge, even if Google claims it doesn’t directly pay anyone to blog for them, the company has relationships with institutions like universities, political organizations and trade associations that have relationships with bloggers and media organizations involving their own advocacy. Oracle has claimed that Google “maintains a network of direct and indirect ‘influencers’ to advance Google’s intellectual property agenda.”

Still, it’s not clear what this disclosure actually aims to achieve, and whether these will have any impact on the case at all. Perhaps the judge just wanted each company to provide adequate disclosure if they were influencing the media. This can be especially important in ensuring fairness at least in terms of public perception. Mueller, after all, has often been quoted by the press as a “patent expert,” whenever news items and op-eds on patent cases are published.

Google Play voucher redeemed ahead of official release

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 06:57 PM PDT

google play

Since we last reported about the impending arrival of Google Play gift cards, things have been moving along rather quickly. A Target employee spotted the vouchers at his branch and was able to make an internal purchase, which he then sent to the folks at Android Police. With their skills, the $25 gift card was successfully redeemed on Google Play ahead of the official launch. Some trickery was naturally involved in the redeeming process, given that it isn't supposed to go live yet.

According to the report, there's no NFC chip embedded on the voucher. This means you can't just tap on the card on your Android device and hope that it will automatically reload your balance. But really, there's nothing wrong with the good old-fashioned way of entering the string of code manually.

And though it isn't 100% confirmed, it is likely you won't be able to make any purchase of physical goods on Google Play using the voucher. It may only work on digital items, like apps and other multimedia content.

Target isn't the only retail store that have stocks of the gift cards. As reported by Phandroid, RadioShack will be offering the vouchers as well. The inventory list shows there will be three flavors to choose from: $10, $25, and $50. Unfortunately, there's also no mention of when the vouchers will go on sale.

The introduction of Google Play gift cards is no doubt a win-win situation for both customers and content providers. As Android enthusiasts, we eagerly await statistics of the voucher's positive impact on the ecosystem.

Liked the original movie? Total Recall – The Game – Episode 1 is now available on Google Play

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 12:14 PM PDT

Curiosity may have sent a few breathtaking snaps from the red planet, but Arnold did that and more 20 long years ago – albeit as an actor in the original Total Recall film. If you have already tried the Android companion game made for the remake, you might be interested in playing the game that's based on the first movie.

Total Recall – The Game – Episode 1 was recently released on Google Play. This is your chance to take on the role of Arnold's character in the movie, Douglas Quaid. The first episode will focus on your journey through planet Mars with the objective of discovering 10 hidden secrets. Weapons are both your best friends and best chance to survive against the hordes of enemies and bosses.

The game is a 3D side-scroller with some stunning visuals. The control is pretty simple as there are only two buttons to worry about: one to jump and another to shoot. While Total Recall – The Game – Episode 1 is a solid offering from the relatively new French developer, the game could use an update to make it less sluggish. More episodes are planned in the future.

Download the game now from Google Play for $1.96. It's what the former governor would've wanted you to do.

Acer rolls out Android 4.0 ICS update for Iconia Tab A501, Rogers’ included

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 11:29 AM PDT

Believe it or not, the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for Acer Iconia Tab 500/501 was hinted back in November of last year, with January being set as the possible date.  It wasn't until May that a variant of the tab got the promised scoop of ice cream, but ICS on the A501 was still nowhere to be found. Fast forward to today, it appears the Android 4.0.3 OTA update is finally being rolled out by Acer.

The Ice Cream Sandwich update has been received by owners of the Acer Iconia Tab A501 in Australia, as well as those in Canada. So if you're on Rogers, you may want to check for the update on your tab now to see if there's a surprise waiting. We’re not sure if other regions will get the update today.

Along with the OTA update, Acer reportedly has also released the kernel source code for both the Iconia Tab A500 and A510 on its website. Devs will be thrilled to have something to play with this weekend.

What's that you say, Jelly Bean? From what Acer has revealed, that may just happen. But just don’t get your hope too high. Be sure to let us know if you've gotten the ICS update notification on your A510 and, perhaps, share your location as well.

Android Authority On Air – Episode 25 – Google Play Gift Cards and CM10

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 11:08 AM PDT

We  started off this week on Android Authority On Air discussing various app updates from the Android world. Chameleon, everyone’s favorite Kickstarter launcher received a nice update this week. Chameleon now has the ability to add custom wallpaper and you’ll be happy to know that more widgets are coming thanks to the recently implemented widget APIs. If you’re into “Pinning” things, the social network Pinterest launched their Android app this week. Google Maps received a hefty update, over 1 million public transit stops are now available along with improved displays for location history. If you’re into applying filters to your photos, Instagram also received a hefty update this week adding Photo Maps and longer captions. Google+ got an update, you can now join Hangouts On Air via mobile. And last, but not least, Adobe Flash for Android is no longer available on the Google Play Store.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is rumored to get Jelly Bean very soon. To back that up, we saw an SGS3 Jelly Bean test ROM leak this week. Those of you rocking the SGS3 on Verizon can now rejoice thanks to an insecure bootloader leak. You can now unlock your Verizon Galaxy S3 bootloader with a 1 click app, from the Play Store. Don’t like a blue or white Galaxy S3? Samsung has you covered and plans on releasing a black version. Black plastic isn’t the biggest news though. Samsung plans on releasing a 64GB version of the Galaxy S3. So now we have phones with up to 128GB of storage, 4 core CPUs, 2 GB of RAM, and high speed LTE connections. Is that a server in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

Besides SGS3 leaks and bootloaders, we saw a decent amount of other headlines from the Rootin’ and ROMin’ front this week. If you’re a CyanogenMod fan, brace yourselves, CM10 nightlies have started for a number of devices. And, Motorola’s bootloader unlock page goes live for a few devices.

A new APK for the Google Play Store surfaced this week, after some digging we found out that Google Play would soon be getting gift cards. Then to back those findings up, some stores started to receive $10 and $25 gift cards for the Play Store. This. Is. Huge.

The Apple vs Samsung war still wages on and should be wrapping up very shortly. In a heated moment this week Judge Koh asked Apple lawyers if they were “smoking crack”. And finally, yes finally, Motorola (Google) seeks to ban the iPod, iPhone and iPad in the USA. Oh patent wars, you never cease to amaze us.

Unknown Samsung Jelly Bean device spotted in the wild: EK-GC100

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 09:49 AM PDT

While we're waiting for Samsung to update some of its hottest Android devices including the Galaxy S3, Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note to Google's latest mobile OS version, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, we're being told that a new Samsung Jelly Bean-based device has been spotted in the wild.

Is it a phone? Is it a tablet? Is it a PMP? We have no idea yet, but Sam Mobile speculates it could be an Android camera or a Tizen device. And we're definitely interested to see whether the EK-GC100, which is what it's called right now, will be unveiled at the upcoming IFA 2012 trade show.

The publication notes that the "strange name" is different from current naming conventions for Samsung phones and tablets, which is why we're even more curious to see what this device is all about.

In addition to running Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, the device is said to sport a screen resolution of 1024 x 600, but not many details are known about it at this point.

We'll be back with more details on this mysterious Jelly Bean Samsung device once we have them. In the mean time, tell us what you think/hope this thing is in the comments section below!

Nexus-like AOSP update support for Sony Xperia S starts as Google experiment

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 09:32 AM PDT

Sony has been less than reliable when it comes to offering timely Android updates for its Android-based devices, but this could all change in the future, as it looks like Google is ready to offer Nexus-like AOSP support to at least one Sony device.

The Sony Xperia S is the lucky fellow that will receive Nexus-like treatment and we're certainly intrigued by the move. What does it mean for the Android business? Will we see other Sony and non-Sony devices get the same support for Google?

I'm sure that neither carriers nor device makers would be entirely happy to let customers fetch their Android updates directly from Google, but should more non-Nexus devices receive AOSP support, then we could see Google attempting to fix a problem it keeps denying of having, the fragmentation in the Android ecosystem.

For now, The Verge reports that the Sony Xperia S is just an experiment, with "Google's Jean-Baptiste Queru, who has long been the main source of AOSP developments for the company," announcing the project. He went on to explain why the device was chosen: “it’s a powerful current GSM device, with an unlockable bootloader, from a manufacturer that has always been very friendly to AOSP," and we're definitely interested to see whether other devices will follow.

In fact, now that Google is working with Sony to offer AOSP support to the Xperia S we will wonder whether this is a sign pointing towards a future Nexus-branded Android device made by Sony in the near future. But we'll cross that bridge once we get there.

Anyone excited about this news?
