Xiaomi MiPhone 3 goes public, MiTV 3D Smart TV also revealed
Sep 5th 2013, 09:22, by Juan Carlos Torres

Xiaomi has just given the press a double whammy, announcing not only the much-awaited MiPhone 3 but also unveiling it’s newest contraption: the “MiTV” 3D Smart TV. Seems like the Chinese company, who recently came into the media spotlight, is ready to step up its game as it prepares to make a mark on the global market.

The Xiaomi MiPhone 3 is loaded with features that it’s hard to decide where to start. It’s 5.0-inch Full HD 1920×1080 display features an ultrasensitive touch screen that lets even those wearing gloves to use it. Mobile photography fans might be pleased with the phone’s 5 megapixel F2.2 aperture rear camera with a Sony Exmor RS 28 mm lens and Philips dual LED flash, while the front sports a 2 megapixel camera capable of shooting 1080p video. One version of the phone is available for China Mobile’s TD/SCDMA network, powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 4. Another version runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 reserved for China Unicom’s WCDMA and China Telecom’s CDMA2000 networks.

The MiTV is, like the MiPhone, also powered by Android, also running the MIUI Android interface customized for TV screens. The smart TV runs on a slightly lower 1.7 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 fitted with an Adreno 320 graphics chip, making it suitable for both viewing videos and playing games. The TV supports loads of streaming options including Miracast, WiDi, DLNA, AirPlay and others, as well as WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity. The MiTV is able to support 3D technology and comes with two 3D glasses.

Xiaomi’s new devices are set to be available in China but no exact date has been given and no word on international availability. Those who will be lucky enough to get their hands on one will have to shell out $327 for a 16 GB Xiaomi MiPhone 3 or $408 for the 64 GB variant. The MiTV 3D Smart TV, on the other hand, carries a price tag of $490.

Android 4.3 coming to Samsung Galaxy S3 and S4 next month
Sep 5th 2013, 08:24, by Gary Sims

Galaxy S4 vs Galaxy S3Most eyes where on the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Samsung Galaxy Gear during Samsung’s principle press event at IFA yesterday, but there was also another tidbit of information that will bring a smile to millions of Samsung Galaxy S3 and S4 owners. According to Samsung the company plans to roll out Android 4.3 for both devices during October.

The Galaxy S3 launched in 2012 with Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich and during this summer an update to Android 4.1.2 was rolled out. However the update wasn’t without its problems. When Verizon released the 4.1.2 upgrade, which also added support for features like Multi-Window multitasking, Multi-Screen and S Beam's Auto Share Shot, for Galaxy S3 users on its network reports started to appear about 4G LTE connectivity issues. Verizon pulled the update but within a couple of weeks a new release was made available that fixed the 4G issues. Since then various rumors have hinted at Samsung moving straight to Android 4.3 and skipping 4.2.2.

The Galaxy S4, which was launched earlier this year, shipped with Android 4.2.2 and the update to Android 4.3 should be hassle free considering that the Google Play Edition of the Galaxy S4 is already running the latest version.

One device conspicuous by its absence in Samsung’s announcement was the Galaxy Note 2. The Note 2, which was released this time last year, is currently running Android 4.1 and it was assumed that Samsung would upgrade it to Android 4.3 along with the S3 and S4. Since the new Galaxy Note 3 will ship with Android 4.3 it is highly likely that the latest version will come to the Note 2 but we are just awaiting confirmation and dates from Samsung.

Android 4.3 is still a variant of Android Jelly Bean (along with 4.1 and 4.2) but it does bring some interesting new features including restricted profiles (a much better way to handle multiple users on the same tablet), Bluetooth 4.0 low-energy support,  OpenGL 3.0 support, a T9 dialer and improvements to the notification system.

This is all great news for Samsung S3 and S4 owners, but of course now the problem is that Google have tempted us with thoughts of Android 4.4 KitKat!

It also shows off the S Pen and goes over the S Finder interface for a bit as well.

Security solution Samsung KNOX opened up for consumers
Sep 5th 2013, 05:17, by Aditya Thawardas

Samsung_Knox_Galaxy_S_IVSamsung KNOX, which adds another security level to your phone, is going to become public. KNOX, which is integrated into the device’s hardware,  allows you to separate your data and apps into containers to make it harder for intruders to access your files. The software has been available for enterprises for some time, and the US Department of Defense even uses it, so it’s got to be good enough for ordinary consumers.

KNOX will be available on the new Galaxy Note 3 and Note 10.1 when it launches. Other already released devices like the Galaxy S III, S4, and Note II will also be able to get KNOX on their device. You can see more info in the official press release after the break.

Samsung KNOX Available for Use by Consumers

Samsung Electronics announced the commercial availability of Samsung KNOXfor use by consumers.

Samsung KNOX is an end-to-end solution that provides security hardening from the hardware through the application layer. Samsung KNOX implements a concept called "container" that is a separate secure execution environment for a set of pre-screened applications to run and store data.

Applications running outside the container have only limited access to the data stored inside the container where security is enforced by system-level protection of Samsung KNOX. User data stored in the container is protected from malware and phishing attacks as well as hacking attempts on physical devices when devices are stolen or lost.

Samsung originally announced earlier this year the availability of Samsung KNOX for use by enterprise by giving IT departments the comprehensive control they need, without infringing on employees' privacy and keeping them satisfied with the consistent user experience of their personal device.

Samsung, since then, has extended its security features to enable consumers to activate the container without involving the IT department and store important personal data inside the container. For example, important personal pictures or video can be stored in the container with no worries for data leakage due to hacking.

In addition, users may choose to store enterprise applications and data such as corporate email, contacts and calendar allowing the IT department to manage the container through EAS (Exchange ActiveSync Server). These features make Samsung KNOX an ideal platform for BYOD (Bring-Your-Own-Device to work).

"Samsung KNOX represents Samsung's strong commitment towards making itsdevices BYOD-ready with the necessary security and feature enhancements,"

-       Dr. Injong Rhee, Senior Vice President of KNOX Business Group, Samsung Electronics.

"We are delighted to see Samsung KNOX provide advanced data and privacy protection for both enterprises and consumers. The availability of Samsung KNOX to consumers will accelerate the adoption of Samsung devices for BYOD as prosumers can now readily experience Samsung KNOX with ease at no cost." said Dr. Injong Rhee, Senior Vice President of KNOX Business Group, Samsung Electronics.

Samsung KNOX-enabled devices are approved by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) for use in DoD networks. Samsung KNOX will be commercially available across the globe on all Samsung's upcoming high-end smartphones and tablets including GALAXY Note 3 and GALAXY Note 10.1 (2014 Edition). Schedules for its availability to other market-deployed devices such as GALAXY S Ⅲ, GALAXY S4 and GALAXY Note Ⅱ will be shortly announced.

ASUS Transformer Pad TF701T revealed, sports Tegra 4
Sep 5th 2013, 07:28, by Juan Carlos Torres

Hybrids are the new black and ASUS definitely wants to stay in fashion with the new Transformer Pad TF701T Android tablet/laptop hybrid. If the name and model number has got you confused with the new Transformer Pad Infinity unveiled at Computex last June, you’re not alone. But fear not, as the two are practically the same.

asus-transformer-pad-tf701t

The ASUS Transformer Pad TF701T is built to be a powerhouse, running on NVIDIA‘s latest mobile chip, the Tegra 4, with a quad-core Cortex A15 CPU and a 72-core mobile GeForce GPU. And that much power will definitely be put to good use, as the TF701T sports a 10.1-inch 2560×1600 IPS display featuring IGZO-TFT technology for lower energy consumption and a 178-degree viewing angle. The tablet also supports Miracast video streaming and an HDMI port to play videos smoothly even on a 4K Ultra HD TV. No word on the tablet’s storage capacity, but it does have a microSDXC card slot for extended storage.

The lower half of the Transformer Pad is no pushover, however. The Mobile Dock sports a full-sized keyboard and large multi-touch touchpad to give the Transformer Pad a productive edge. It also has a USB 3.0 for an added connection option, as well as an SDXC slot for more data storage. The Mobile Dock also houses its own battery, giving the tablet an extra 13 to 17 hours of life when docked.

We don’t exactly know if the earlier Transformer Pad Infinity, which still has to see the light of day, has been supplanted by this new model. As with the earlier version, ASUS has not given any pricing or availability information, but we hope that this product will not go gently into the night this time.

'Jelly Bean' version of Android gains a few more percentage points
Sep 5th 2013, 09:00, by Phil Nickinson

Android versions

Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich drop some, Cupcake and Donut no longer reported

Google has dropped the latest platform version statistics on us — a monthly look at how the various versions of Android are doing the larger scheme of things.

No great surprises here — Jelly Bean has increased to to 45.1 percent of all active devices, up about 5 percentage points from last month. That comes at the expense of Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread, mostly, which are ticking down as more phones receive updates.

It's also worth mentioning that Google is no longer specifically reporting on Cupcake and Donut, because they can't use the new Google Play Store (from which these numbers are gleaned) but it does mention they total about 1 percent.
