LG G2: A multitude of on-screen buttons, just not multitasking
Aug 7th 2013, 18:18, by Phil Nickinson

LG G2

LG has — finally — moved to on-screen buttons with the LG G2, giving up the ghost (for now) on the capacitive buttons of old. That provides for some flexibility for how things work in addition to making things a little easier on the hardware side.

By default, you've got three buttons — back, home and menu. Yes, an on-screen menu button. Not recent apps.

You do get the option to move things around a little bit, as well as add a fourth button, which either can be a shortcut to QuickMemo, or it can quickly pull down the notification shade.

As the image above shows, you've got the following permutations:

  • Back-Home-Menu
  • Menu-Home-Back
  • Back-Home-Menu-Shade
  • Shade-Menu-Home-Back
  • Back-Home-Menu-QMemo
  • QMemo-Menu-Home-Back

Interesting and confounding at the same time.

LG G2 camera: 13MP, optical image stabilization and back button activation

LG G2 camera

The camera of the LG G2 is another characteristic of the phone that the company further emphasized during the New York-based event.

Looking strictly at hardware, we have a 13-megapixel main camera with optical image stabilization (OIS) and a front-facing 2.1-megapixel camera.

Naturally, LG focused – no pun intended – on the main shooter of the smartphone, a camera that offers advanced features, as previously rumored.

For starters, to turn on the camera, you simply have to long-press one of the buttons placed on the back, right underneath the camera. Furthermore, the camera itself uses anti-fingerprint, durable sapphire glass, so you won't have to worry about touching it by mistake when looking for the buttons and leaving your fingerprints all over the glass.

The optical images stabilization feature is supposed to offer better, blur-free images and videos, and it's certainly a feature not seen in many other smartphones. In fact, LG says that the 13-megapixel camera on the LG G2 is the first such phone camera to offer OIS, without the added bulk.

LG G2

Interestingly, LG also offered a camera performance comparison between the LG G2 and two competing devices whose identities it tried to conceal – the iPhone 5 and the Galaxy S4 – suggesting that even when zooming in, the camera can offer a better pictures than the competition thanks to OIS use.

However, we'll have to see how the camera performs in our future review of the device. We’ll further add that we expect the Galaxy Note 3′s main camera to also have OIS features.

Sony Honami UI and apps brought to life and caught on video through modded Xperia Z
Aug 7th 2013, 17:53, by David Gonzales

Sony Honami screens
So the LG G2 has finally been announced, and somehow you weren’t dazzled by it, which is why you’re still holding out for something else like an upcoming phone from Sony tentatively named the Honami. Well, can’t blame you. After all, who could say no to a phone that touts full 4K resolution video recording on a 20-megapixel camera as one of its many new features? We’d like to think no one can.

Anyway, if you’re really keen on getting your actual hands on a Sony Honami as soon as possible, you should know what you don’t even really have to wait anymore. We told you about the fact that the Sony Honami camera app had already been ported to current Xperia smartphone models a little over a month ago. Now, it appears that the entire Honami software set — UI and apps included — has been made available for use. Through a custom ROM that’s made for models like the Xperia Z, that is.

Perhaps you aren’t feeling quite that adventurous just yet. Maybe instead of going all out and installing a custom ROM on an existing phone — so you can see what kind of niceties come included with every unit when they finally come out — you just want to watch how the UI works and how to apps run from a short distance. You can do that, too.

An online video made by YouTube user Ashton Tekno gives us our first look at the Sony Honami, albeit only in software form. The video lasts a little over 12 minutes long, and shows us some of the phone’s nifty new features which apparently include the ability to record incoming and outgoing phone calls, as well as pick an Equalizer preset during said phone calls.

Why are you even still reading this? Just watch the video below and you’ll see it for yourself.

Android Device Manager web interface is live, try it now

Android Device Manager web interface

We've told you on Monday that Google has begun rolling out Android Device Manager, an app that lets users locate, ring, or erase their lost or stolen Android devices. At that moment, the app, part of the Play Services frameworks, needed a web interface to be useful, but it now looks that Google has just flipped on the switch.

To try the new service, visit https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager, where you will be presented with a map and a simple interface that lets you manage your device. Before you can use the erase functionality though, you need to activate ADM from the Device Administrators section in Settings>Security.

Trying out the app, I found it quite intuitive and fast. Ringing my phone was almost instant – the alarm sounds for five minutes at max volume, unless the power button is pressed on the device.

Locating the device was just as easy, though. without active GPS, the location wasn't very precise. Once I activated GPS on the phone and refreshed the location, the web interface displayed my accurate location.

You can also erase your phone as a last resort measure to keep your precious personal information away from prying eyes.

Android Device Manager

The second component of the Android Device Manager looks like it's slowly going live

We saw the Android Device Manager, Google's find (and wipe) my phone utility, starting to push out it's phone component over the weekend, and today the web interface is live for some folks. It's the second piece of the puzzle you'll need to remotely manage your lost or stolen Android, and something Google has let third-parties handle until now.

The web address is https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager?u=0, and if available for your account will require you to be signed into Google on a modern web browser. I'm lucky enough to have everything working with mine, but reports from the rest of the AC staff range from partial completeness to nothing yet.

With the new service, you can locate your phone or tablet on a map, send a command to ring the ringer at full volume for five minutes (don't try this with the HTC One if dogs or small children are around), send a notification to the device to initiate setup, and once properly set-up wipe all your personal data off the missing device.

We're going to play with this for a bit, and I'll even sacrifice my Plague, Inc. data to test the remote wipe feature. In the meantime, see a few screenshots after the break. Be sure to holler if you're seeing the Android Device Manager live on your Google account.
