Verizon Moto X leak tips an August 23 launch
Aug 6th 2013, 18:16, by Robert Nelson

Motorola has yet to offer an availability date for the recently announced Moto X smartphone. And in fact, the carriers have yet to offer anything specific either. The official line has been how the handset would arrive beginning in late-August. With that in mind, a recent leak is pointing towards an August 23rd release with Verizon Wireless.

The details of the leak come by way of Android Central who have been tipped off by an anonymous source. Said source has shared an image of an inventory system from a “major” retailer. This image details a “street date” of August 23rd with mention of inventory arriving on August 15th.

No mention of pricing was included with this date leak, however we suspect it will be competitive with the other carriers. At present we have seen details about the 16GB Moto X selling for $199 with AT&T and also for $199.99 with US Cellular. Of course, Motorola also mentioned $199 and $249 price points for the 16GB and 32GB models respectively.

Aside from the release of the Moto X, Verizon Wireless customers looking for a new phone have a good month ahead of them. Big Red will also be launching the DROID Mini, Ultra and Maxx smartphones in late-August. Not to mention, there is also still talk of an HTC One announcement coming later in the month.

Aside from these other Android handsets, the Verizon Moto X is expected to get MotoMaker customizations later in the year. One catch with the Verizon version of the Moto X that some should be aware of is the bootloader. Those looking to have that unlocked will need to skip the regular carrier branded model and instead look towards the Developer Edition that will be available by way of Motorola.

Motorola XOOM 4G LTE on Verizon getting Android 4.1.2 update today
Aug 6th 2013, 17:50, by Cory Gunther

Late last week we confirmed, as well as Verizon Wireless themselves, that the aging and old Motorola XOOM tablet was indeed getting upgraded to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. To our amazement they haven’t forgot about that old tablet, and now we’re happy to confirm it’s finally hitting devices. Although Verizon’s initial report had a typo, this isn’t 4.2 Jelly Bean, it’s 4.1.2 instead.

So not only are we not getting Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with all those improvements, or the multi-user account stuff brought with 4.2, sadly it will just barely be making it to the Jelly Bean world with 4.1.2 instead. To be honest though, we’ll take what we can get considering I never thought I’d see the Verizon XOOM ever get another update.

As a reminder, the original WiFi model of the XOOM got this same update way back in October of last year, so Verizon is only about 10 months behind. But again, we’ll take what we can get sadly. Being the first Honeycomb tablet available we’re surprised to see the XOOM LTE holding on this long. Even though it’s a fat and heavy tablet of dead weight these days.

When Verizon confirmed the update was coming on their support page, we were all amazed, but now multiple tips and even a screenshot from the via below confirms it is indeed hitting users tablet as we speak. It’s been rolling out since late last week, and you should be getting 4.1.2 Jelly Bean on your Verizon XOOM 4G LTE anytime now. Start checking for updates, if you haven’t already. Enjoy folks!

ZTE Z998 smartphone detailed ahead of AT&T announcement
Aug 6th 2013, 17:37, by Robert Nelson

This isn’t the first time the ZTE Z998 smartphone has been spotted. An image leaked back in early June that had the handset dubbed the Mustang and sporting AT&T branding. We have yet to see an announcement from AT&T, however the handset has recently been spotted on the ZTE website. This time around the handset still has the AT&T logo.

In addition, it is has dropped the Mustang codename and is simply being referred to as the ZTE Z998. Aside from the AT&T branding in the images, the ZTE website also clearly has this listed as heading towards AT&T. The carrier has yet to say when the device will be available. Or for that matter, whether it will be arriving as a prepaid or postpaid device. Nonetheless, as this has been listed on the ZTE website we now have an official set of specs.

The ZTE Z998 will arrive with a 4.5-inch display with a resolution of 960 x 540 and powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz MSM8930 processor with 1GB of RAM. The handset also has 4GB of storage space, a microSD card slot, 2070 mAh battery, 1 megapixel front-facing camera and a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera with an LED flash and 720p video recording.

There will also be the basics such as WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS. ZTE will also have the Z998 running Jelly Bean. Though, it will be Android 4.1. Otherwise, while the specs are not super high-end, the handset will arrive with support for the LTE network. With that in mind, given the detailing on the ZTE website, it seems the Z998 should receive an official welcoming from AT&T sooner rather than later.

Android Key Lime Pie KRS36B spotted on a Nexus 7
Aug 6th 2013, 16:51, by Cory Gunther

The latest update to our favorite mobile OS has only been here a few weeks, and we’re already starting to see signs of the next version by Google. Android 4.3 Jelly Bean was announced and released two weeks ago by Google on their new Nexus 7 tablet, but we’re also expecting to see the next major update to Android this year. That being the “K” release.

Key-Lime-Pie

Following their usual alphabetical order for updates, named after tasty deserts, Android Jelly Bean is soon to be replaced by what most believe will be 4.5 or 5.0 Key Lime Pie. Well, today we’re seeing our first glimpse of that actually out in the wild. A Nexus 7 and Nexus 4 both have been spotted over at the Chromium Bug tracker running a brand new, never seen version of Android.

Just like all build versions of Gingerbread started with G, and latest updates like Android 4.3 Jelly Bean started with J (like JWR66V and JSS15J) latest information has revealed a set of devices running Android version KRS36B, with the K being the important part here. This is the next version of Android, which is rumored to bring some major design overhauls into our world.

Whether it ends up being Android 4.4, or bumped up to Android 5.0 one this is for sure, the next version of Android will start with a K. It’s been basically confirmed as Key Lime Pie, but anything is possible until Google makes it official. We’ve heard nothing but rumors at this point, and were expecting KLP to arrive at Google I/O in May, which obviously didn’t happen, so this is rather exciting.

Hopefully we’ll see a new version of Android Key Lime Pie running on a Nexus 5 come this October. Which would replace the LG Nexus 4 that hit the streets last year around the same time. That’s our guess.

HTC "Here's To Change" campaign continues with another teaser video
Aug 6th 2013, 16:44, by Robert Nelson

HTC gave a first look at a new promotion yesterday. The company took to several social sites with mention of something called #HTChange. The specifics are still to a minimum, however speculation points towards this as having something to do with the earlier news about Robert Downey Jr. becoming involved in a new marketing campaign.

There is also hope this will lead to an official announcement for the HTC One Max. That handset is said to be sporting a 5.9-inch 1080p display and Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. The announcement is expected to come during IFA, which is also when Samsung will be announcing the Galaxy Note III.

Anyway, in addition to the Vine and Instagram videos we saw from HTC yesterday, it looks like a similarly themed video has also been posted on YouTube. This one is also on the shorter side measuring in at just 15 seconds. Sadly, the main difference in this video is in the picture quality and not in the form of more details on what is coming.

The video closes with the HTC logo transforming into the same “here’s to change” mention from the earlier videos. This video also gives a brief look at a handset. But with it being so brief, it is hard to tell exactly which handset it may be. It doesn’t necessarily look big enough to be a 5.9-inch One Max, but then again, the guy holding that phone could have really big hands.

That all being said, while this could eventually lead to an announcement of the One Max, it is looking like HTC has begun to introduce Robert Downey Jr. As mentioned, this video is a bit better in quality and therefor we have spied what appears to be a haircut and black-rimmed glasses like the Iron Man star sports.

Finally, an “HTC Generator” has also appeared on the HTC website to further promote the cause. This is simple and really just plays on the HTC name with things like “here’s to clicking” and “humorous trombone champion.”
