Samsung Galaxy Pocket Plus image and specs leak: not much of a “Plus” phone

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 02:28 AM PST

samsung-galaxy-pocket

While Samsung has always been about the quantity as much as the quality of mobile devices, offering numerous choices for every particular market niche and even creating some new ones, it lately seems as though there's not much thought put into "upgrades" anymore.

The recently unveiled Galaxy S2 Plus was a great example of a rehash that was not worthy of the "Plus" name, only bumping the software of the original GS2, and now we have another device that confirms Sammy's laziness and/or lack of new ideas.

The Galaxy Pocket Plus looks exactly the same as the original G Pocket released back in April 2012 and, as far as we know, is set to come with identical hardware and a slight software upgrade. Is that enough to warrant the release of a "new" device? We'd probably say no, but we'll let you be the judges of that.

Now, it is true that the Pocket Plus has not been confirmed by official sources, so it might not be real after all, but SamMobile, the website that's got the scoop on it, has almost always been spot-on with its Samsung-related rumors.

Pocket Plus

According to SamMobile, the phone is to come with an 800 MHz single-core processor, a 2.8-inch 240 x 320 pix res touchscreen, 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB of on-board storage, a 2 MP rear-facing snapper, a 1,200 mAh battery, Android 4.0.4 with TouchWiz, Bluetooth 3.0, A-GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, an FM radio, USB 2.0, accelerometer support and a digital compass.

Taking the features one by one, that's most likely the same CPU as inside the original Galaxy Pocket, definitely the exact same awful camera and display, as well as an identical battery, duplicate connectivity options across the board, and the same sorry-ass internal memory.

The only upgrade is the software, bumped from good ol' Gingerbread to the newer Ice Cream Sandwich, but again, wouldn't it have been easier to just push the new Android 4.0 pack to the 2012 Pocket? Not to mention that, if Sammy decides to not issue the update for the original low-ender to increase the appeal of the rehash, we might see some very unhappy Galaxy Pocket adopters.

In any case, we should probably wait for an official announcement before casting the first stones in Samsung’s direction. Who knows, maybe there will be some kind of hardware tweaks after all. Or maybe a price cut of sorts. Or at least a design makeover.

United Airlines Launches Satellite Based Wi-Fi Service

CHICAGO, Jan. 15, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — United Airlines has introduced onboard satellite-based Wi-Fi internet connectivity on the first of its international widebody aircraft, becoming the first U.S.-based international carrier to offer customers the ability to stay connected while traveling on long-haul overseas routes.

The aircraft, a Boeing 747 outfitted with Panasonic Avionics Corporation’s Ku-band satellite technology, serves trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific routes.

Additionally, United has outfitted Ku-band satellite Wi-Fi on two Airbus 319 aircraft serving domestic routes, offering customers faster inflight Internet service than air-to-ground technology (ATG). The company expects to complete installation of satellite-based Wi-Fi on 300 mainline aircraft by the end of this year.

“Satellite-based Wi-Fi service enables us to better serve our customers and offer them more of what they want in a global airline,” said Jim Compton , vice chairman and chief revenue officer at United. “With this new service, we continue to build the airline that customers want to fly.”

Customers have the choice of two speeds: Standard, priced initially between $3.99 and $14.99 depending on the duration of flight, and Accelerated, priced initially between $5.99 and $19.99 and offering faster download speeds than Standard.

United will install satellite-based Wi-Fi on Airbus 319 and 320 aircraft, and on Boeing 737, 747, 757, 767, 777 and 787 aircraft. Customers will be able to use their wireless devices such as laptops, smart phones and tablets onboard those aircraft to connect with internet service using the in-flight hotspot.

United is upgrading its fleet with more than $550 million in additional onboard improvements, including:

  • Offering the world’s largest fleet of aircraft with flat-bed seats, with more than 175 aircraft with 180-degree flat beds in premium cabins once the airline completes the installation in the second quarter.
  • Expanding extra-legroom Economy Plus seating to provide the most such seating of any U.S. carrier.
  • Revamping the transcontinental “p.s.” fleet of airplanes that fly between New York Kennedy and Los Angeles and San Francisco, offering an improved premium cabin with fully flat beds, Wi-Fi Internet service, and personal on-demand entertainment at every seat.
  • Improving inflight entertainment options with streaming video content on the Boeing 747-400 fleet.
  • Retrofitting overhead bins on 152 Airbus aircraft, allowing for significantly greater storage of carry-on baggage.

Another cheap quad-core phone: ZTE U956 spotted in leaked pictures, coming to China Mobile soon

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 01:09 AM PST

ZTE U956
If you thought the recently announced ZTE Grand S Android smartphone was great but somehow don’t think you can spend upwards of $500 on your next mobile, then perhaps you should take a look at a less feature-packed, more affordable alternative from ZTE’s own selection of models, in the form of the ZTE U956. It’s supposed to be a mid-range model with an entry-level price tag.

This particular Android smartphone packs a lot of today’s most popular mid-range features — such as a 5-inch 720p HD touchscreen display, an 8-megapixel camera with built-in LED flash, and a quad-core MediaTek MT6589 processor — yet it comes with a price tag that won’t instantly bust a huge gaping hole in your wallet.

The ZTE U956 is set to become available as a China Mobile exclusive, as evidenced by a couple of leaked pictures that first surfaced online through GizChina. And what’s more, it’s going to be priced at only 1,499 yuan or about $242 USD. Some people have likened the ZTE U956 to the upcoming Huawei G520, saying that it’s a slightly bigger version with a price tag that’s only a bit more expensive.

Certainly, similarly-equipped Android handsets don’t get much cheaper. So when or if ZTE finally decides to do a release outside of China, then there will be plenty of happy Android users going about with their ZTE U956′s in hand. Still, it will arrive in China first, so watch out for its official release there very soon.

The world got a first look at the Sony Xperia ZL when its pictures got leaked along with the flagship Sony Xperia Z through Sony’s own web site.

And as you may already know, both of these handsets got officially announced at this year’s recently concluded CES expo in Las Vegas. Sony has since announced that the Xperia ZL will be available in two official colors: black and white. Is there hope for any other color variants? A leaked set of photos today answers that question in the affirmative.

RedXperiaZL_10

Based on some photos acquired and posted online by the guys over at Xperia Blog, there seems to be a third color version of the Android-flavored Xperia ZL. It’s coated in red, and it looks every bit as attractive as you’re probably imagining it to be. In a post on its officialy Developer World blog, Sony maintains that the Xperia ZL will only be available in two colors. But a prospective Xperia ZL owner can dream, and maybe even convince Sony to officially release a red version in the future. For more pics, head over to the source.

Instapaper pushes update to Android app, with new features and performance improvements

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 08:20 PM PST

Instapaper for Android-w600

Instapaper has just updated its Android app to version 1.2. First released mid-2012, the Android variant of the app did not have some of the features that made the Instapaper for iPad version the app of choice for reading internet articles offline.

Version 1.2 answers most of those concerns. This release adds the much-requested Pagination Mode, which emulates reading from a book or magazine. This feature comes with the option to scroll the page by tilting the Android device up or down. Along with other performance improvements, it has also added inline footnotes.

The first version of Instapaper was an instant hit. The "read later" option saves a copy of the web page, for later reading. It also syncs and updates the page almost instantly when the saved copy is read. A short version of the saved article can be read on the app. Tapping the link opens the page on the browser.

Instapaper’s popularity stems from the ease with which it integrates with the browser. Unlike bookmarking sites, which stores links to web pages forever, Instapaper is more suited for users who just want a copy of the article on their mobile devices and then delete it after use.

Not everyone would find the need for a bookmark-and-forget app. But apps like Instapaper are very helpful for those who scan for interesting articles first on the web or through a mobile browser, and then prefer to read the article in-depth later. Instapaper is also noted for promoting long-form articles as it includes "The Feature," a set of editor-recommended articles and web content.

Instapaper is available for $3.99 on the Google Play Store. If you’d rather go for a free app, you can go for Pocket (formerly Read it Later), which is also a popular offline reader for mobile devices.

Let’s not prolong the agony. Here are 9 new Android games that you should take time to check out this week.

Dungelot

The developers at Red Winter Software have created another simple yet addicting adventure game called Dungelot. The game only needs you to find a special key so that you can continue to the next level. The more levels you clear, the more points and gold you gain. That’s basically the concept of the game. With its simple game concept, Dungelot is quite fun and addicting. Each level has a number of cells. You will need to tap those to search for items, challenges, traps, and monsters. One of the monsters holds the key to the door. Find the key to advance to the next level. You have to strategically plan which cell to open and which monster to fight. You don’t want to end up using all your health points and start over. Upgrade your skills with accumulated gold and last longer with each round. You can also unlock new heroes if you reach a certain level in the game. Are you up for Dungelot’s challenge? Download the game for about a dollar from the Google Play Store.

Ant Raid

Oh no! Zombie snails and bees are rising and they are coming for the ant colony. Ready your army of ants and attack incoming enemies in HeroCraft’s Ant Raid app. As the name suggests, you control a colony of ants in this game. Command the ants to attack incoming enemies such as zombie snails and bees. You can select a small group of ants to attack small animals or a bigger group to attack bigger enemies. Aside from attacking enemies, your ants can also bring the injured back to the base for medical care. If surrounded by enemies, unleash your power to squash or zap enemies with lightning. In addition to the fun gameplay, the game’s background music and cute sound effects will surely bring a smile to your face. Ant Raid is on its launch sale and will only cost you US$0.97 to play the game.

Dueling Blades

Rouse the fighting spirit within you and put your skills to the test by battling fellow fighters online in 6wave’s strategy-based fighting game called Dueling Blades. In this game, you control a virtual avatar and battle with other players’ avatars. During duels, you must plan where you want to move your character and aim your attacks. Doing battles lets you gain experience points and strengthen your avatar. Customize the looks of your avatar, equip it with the strongest items, or don it with fancy and adorable clothes. Since this is an online battle game, you will need an Internet connection to play. Aside from battling with other players, you can also do single player, discover the game’s story, and battle against pirates, bandits, and even the undead. Items and some game features require you to spend in-game gold and diamonds, which you can earn by doing quests or leveling up. You can also buy additional gold and diamond in the game’s shop. Test your skills and engage in heart-stopping duels in Dueling Blades for free from the Google Play Store.

ShaqDown

You may have played virtually every zombie game there is, but ShaqDown by Onespear Entertainment is the only zombie game in which you can find basketball star Shaquille O’Neal taking out zombies. The virus that had reanimated the dead has now turned these undead creatures into sentient killing machines. Humanity has been enslaved, but hope is not lost. The man that they call the Justice Bringer will fight against these rotting oppressors and liberate humankind. Knock over weak zombies, uppercut and slamdunk unstable ones, and obliterate mutant undead with your free throw. Purchase Shaqdown from the Google Play Store for US$0.99.

Puppy Tales

On one fine morning, a puppy saw something quite unusual and chased after it. But, like so many stories, the puppy tripped over a rock and fell into another world. Puppy Tales by MoMinis tells the story of this adorable puppy and its journey through a new and unusual world filled with monsters. Help puppy jump over obstacles and gaping chasms, and collect doggy treats and paw-printed coins. The world is not safe, however, but the puppy can defeat enemies by jumping on them. For an extra boost, winged boots and four-leaf clovers pepper the land and are ready for the puppy to use in its quest home. Puppy Tales, however, is ad-supported. Ads appear at the top portion of the screen while you’re playing and during loading screens. You can remove ads within the game by paying with the in-game Bucks.

Beat the Beast

Chundos Studio’s Beat the Beast is a rather unique take on the tower defense genre. Instead of the usual straight line or maze-like paths that enemies are supposed to pass, Beat the Beast makes invading monsters climb a winding pathway to get to your castle. The way is long and you’ll have a lot of spots to set up your colorful but deadly weaponized towers. Shoot enemies down with arrows, electrocute them with a thunder tower, throw flaming boulders at them, or smash them with hammers. You can even build magic houses so you can raise magic points and unleash powerful spells to weaken the enemy. Purchase Beat the Beast from the Google Play Store for US$1.00.

King’s Bounty: Legions

Command an army of able and strong warriors in King’s Bounty: Legions by NIVAL. Choose the best among the best to man your army and send your enemies running back to their own kingdoms. Find allies to help you in your quest and savor great-looking 3D graphics in this game. Get to play with other people and forge guilds with them as you take on various quests in various locations. You can also join tournaments to hone your strategy-making skills in this free game. This is an online game so you need an Internet connection to play. Special items and upgrades can be bought for gems, which can be bought from the in-game shop.

Cat War2

Cats and dogs have long been archenemies for different reasons, depending on the story you’ve heard about their feud since time immemorial. There have been games that revolved around this story and one game you must try is Cat War2 by WESTRIVER. This game is the second installment of the first one, featuring cute cats and dogs. The game’s main objective is to defend Catphinx’s kingdom of cats from being overrun by the kingdom of dogs. Earn diamonds to upgrade your feline forces and equipment to further fortify your defense against those mangy mutts. Or, you can buy additional diamonds from the in-game store. Have fun defending the kingdom of cats with this free game.

Dead City

Ever wondered what it is like to be the only person left after a zombie apocalypse? Find out in COM2US’ Dead City. The “D-Virus” has turned all of humankind into the undead — except you — and you have to avoid getting the same fate. Survive by shooting zombies that come at you from different directions or run them over using your car. Fight well to earn gold so you can buy more weapons and items. Or, buy additional gold from the in-game store. Though this is a free game, ads sometimes appear on the main menu. It’s either kill or be killed. Save yourself from being killed in Dead City.

You will surely have a blast with our list of new and irresistible games for the first half of January. Which games did you try? Which ones are your favorites? Movea is yet another indoor location tracking and mapping system

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 06:12 PM PST

Movea indoor mapping

GPS has been the gold standard in outdoor navigation (along with its counterparts in other regions like GLONASS). However, indoor navigation through buildings or even underground, is difficult or even impossible because GPS essentially requires line-of-sight with satellites. Solving for the problem of indoor navigation, app developers use different methods in order to give accurate map renditions. One solution is to create indoor maps with the phone and upload it to the user or building’s database. These usually end up with maps which are used solely by the building or business owner. Another is the use of magnetic resonance, such as the solution being developed by IndoorAtlas.

Yet another solution was presented by Movea at CES in Las Vegas earlier this month. With a combination of GPS, WiFi, 3G/4G triangulation, and the smartphone’s builtin accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope, and pressure sensor acting as an altimeter, Movea has created a self-correcting indoor navigation system.

Movea has more than 20 years of experience in motion sensing software, which they have used to their advantage in this app. With the use of available tools ans sensors that already come built-into smartphones, Movea’s app is able to accurately determine indoor location against a building’s blueprint.

Combination of sensor readings

The GPS and WiFi trianguation is only used for data outdoors. That’s because GPS works best when in line of sight. Even on the best days, GPS has an accuracy of about 10 meters. Nearby buildings and structures give signal readings that will often disrupt the signals, hence the difficulty in geo-location in a crowded metropolis full of skyscrapers. Movea’s system initially reads from GPS, and then WiFi triangulation is used to improve on the location. Indoors, all the other phone tools are used in calculating position. Like a pedometer, the app asks for the user’s height, which gives a good idea of how much distance is travelled for each step. This would be used as a basis for calculations distance travelled.

The accelerometer and gyroscope is used to determine speed of travel (whether the user is walking or running). If a building blueprint exists, this can be uploaded to the app and the data being processed is compared with the blueprint. If the app finds any inconsistencies, like walking through walls, corrections are made to improve the navigation.

If the phone has a pressure sensor, it will be used for pressure readings to determine if the user is riding an elevator. Of course, not all smartphones have a magnetometer or a pressure sensor. If the phone has a magnetometer, it will be used along with the gyroscope to act as a compass and help in creating a vector for any movement.

When in use, the system constantly calculates all the data from the phone sensors to help determine the user’s location and direction. It also updates the phone map and the directions to the destination. Directions are more reliable with smartphones which have more sensors. Additionally, regular use would also help the app learn as it adapts to the user and the environment.

Movea's system goes beyond indoor mapping and location, and can actually be used for motion-sensing user interfaces and applications.

Movea’s system goes beyond indoor mapping and location, and can actually be used for motion-sensing user interfaces and applications.

Lack of building data

At the moment, the biggest drawback is the lack of blueprints. The software uses the building blueprint as the initial map. Movements are calculated against the map, and then recalibrated while the app is in use. It would stop giving directions while it recalibrates location and recalculates for instructions on how to go to a cerain location.

The availability of building blueprints may be the biggest hindrance to accurate indoor navigation. However, Google and other companies are already working on acquiring this data, which will help users navigate through malls, university campuses, airports, museums, and other places of interest. After Google Maps and Google Earth popularized geo-location among smartphone users, the next step in competition is likely in the indoor mapping arena.

Movea’s system actually goes beyond mapping and indoor navigation. The company also develops motion-tracking and sensing systems for various applications. As such, indoor location might only be the first step. Movea might, in the future, provide motion-sensing interfaces for smartphones, tablets and other portable devices, much like Microsoft’s Kinect and Leap Motion’s The Leap, which is already being built-into some portable systems.

Will Movea be the future of indoor-tracking and motion-sensing interfaces? It’s still too early to guess, but with different takes on how to track indoor movement and map motion, it will be interesting to watch and see how companies will be able to perfect their systems in the years to come.
