Verizon Galaxy S III stops by the FCC

Posted: 02 Jun 2012 06:16 PM PDT

If there’s any doubt left that Samsung’s new flagship will make it to every member of the Big Four American wireless carriers, let it end here. In addition to entries for the AT&T and T-Mobile models, Verizon’s Galaxy S III has made it to the well-trodden halls of the FCC, complete with the predictable CDMA and LTE bands. PocketNow spotted the highly anticipated device in the FCC’s standard filings.

There’s at least one surprise here: the Verizon Galaxy S III will have support for GSM voice and EDGE data around the world, presumably from launch or shortly thereafter. Big Red announced upcoming global support for international bands in the HTC Rezound and the Motorola DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX, so I suppose it shouldn’t be that surprising. It also means that with a little modding, the Verizon GSIII will work with AT&T and T-Mobile, though you’ll have to forego GSM data speeds.

We know from a previous benchmark leak that the Verizon Galaxy S III (and the rest of the American versions, with the possible exception of T-Mobile’s) will make do with a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor. This is because Sammy’s own Exynos 4 Quad isn’t yet compatible with LTE networks. What we don’t know is whether it’ll get bumped up to 2GB of RAM like the Canadian versions. Oh, and we don’t know anything about pricing or availability, though T-Mobile looks primed to release the phone on June 20th.

See precisely how strong Corning’s Gorilla Glass 2 is [Video]

Posted: 02 Jun 2012 06:04 AM PDT

gorilla glass 2

We all know gorillas are tough. That's why they use 800-pound gorilla to call someone who's the biggest and baddest in a certain area.

Well, the 800-pound gorilla in glass making is Corning, the maker of the protective sheets of glass that protect the displays of our oh-so-precious devices from nicks and scratches.

Corning's Gorilla Glass is used in hundreds of devices and have become synonymous with durability. Heck, you can even hammer nails with it.

Yet, there's something better – Corning's Gorilla Glass 2, which is used, amongst others, in Samsung's record-breaking Galaxy S3. Gorilla 2 is even stronger than the first generation of scratch-resistant glass. Actually, manufacturers can get the same protection for their devices by using a sheet that is 20% thinner. This in turns makes possible the ever-thinner devices that we got used to lately.

The glass specialist has released a nifty that shows precisely how strong its latest creation is. Check it out yourself and think about how cool it would be if all glass would be Gorilla glass.

Samsung Galaxy S3 teardown reveals iPhone 4S-like Sony camera, iPad 2-like CPU

Posted: 02 Jun 2012 05:48 AM PDT

As expected, the recently launched Galaxy S3 has been torn apart by the guys over at Chipworks in collaboration with iFixit, and the teardown revealed a few interesting details about the company's 2012 flagship smartphone.

The phone sacrificed in this joint venture was an international GSM Galaxy S3 version, with the LTE model that will ship to U.S. carriers to be cracked open on a future date.

Among the internal components found inside the Galaxy S III, Chipworks noticed the application processor, a Samsung Exynos 4412 32nm CMOS 1.4GHz quad-core ARM processor that's apparently the same generation as the "Apple A5 rev 2, APL2498, also fabricated by Samsung," which is found inside the 2012 iPad 2 and Apple TV models. Furthermore, the 8-megapixel camera backside-illuminated sensor is produced by Sony, and it's similar to the one found inside the iPhone 4S, but newer.

What's also worth mentioning is the fact that the display of the smartphone is a very expensive part to replace in case you end up breaking it. The glass is apparently "fused to the display and the display to the Galaxy S3's frame," which means you'll have to shell out more cash for these components in case of accident.

As for the handset's battery, you'll be happy to hear that the Galaxy S3 has a "serviceable battery," which means you'll probably be able to replace it yourself in case you'll need more than one unit to get you through the day, especially when if you end up buying the LTE version.

iFixit did not provide a repairability score for the Galaxy S3 at this time, not that we'd encourage you to fix the handset yourself in case of breakage.

T-Mobile Galaxy S3 press photo leaked, home button still in the picture

Posted: 02 Jun 2012 05:41 AM PDT

While the Samsung Galaxy S3 is already available in various international markets, US Android fans interested in purchasing the company's 2012 flagship smartphone will have to wait at least a few more weeks to get it, if recent rumors are correct.

The phone is expected to land in U.S. stores on June 20, at which point you'll be able to get your Galaxy S3 flavor from one of the four major mobile operators – Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile are already confirmed to carry the Galaxy S3 – or from one of the regional carriers that will surely pick up the phone.

Meanwhile, the first press photo of a U.S. Galaxy S3 version has been leaked and the image is quite revealing. The Verge got its hands on pics of T-Mobile’s Galaxy S3 versions, both in white and blue. From the looks of it, it appears that U.S. carriers are finally ready to launch the same Galaxy S3 version that's available in Europe and other markets. The images reveal that the Home button is here to stay for a change, at least in T-Mobile's Galaxy S3 version.

Historically, US carriers pressured Samsung to create custom Galaxy S and Galaxy S2 versions for their customers, and even went ahead and used different names for those devices. One of the most notable differences between US and international Galaxy S / Galaxy S II versions was the absence of the Home button, in both cases. American Galaxy S and Galaxy S2 models feature the standard 4-button layout found by default on most Android devices, while their international counterparts have a larger Home button flanked by two capacitive buttons.

In 2010, the Galaxy S was referred to in the USA as the Verizon Fascinate, the AT&T Captivate, the Sprint Epic 4G, the T-Mobile Vibrant, or the U.S. Cellular Mesmerizing. In addition to different names, these devices sported a custom design for each carrier. However, all these handsets offered similar functionality, with only the Epic 4G standing out from the crowd thanks to its 4G WiMAX connectivity and slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

In 2011, the Galaxy S2 was sold as the AT&T Galaxy S2, the T-Mobile Galaxy S2, the Sprint Epic 4G Touch and the U.S. Cellular Galaxy S2. While most carriers kept the original name of the product, only AT&T decided to stick with the default 4.3-inch screen size, while the other carriers opted for a larger 4.5-inch display. Furthermore, Sprint went ahead and asked for 4G WiMAX support to be added to the Epic 4G Touch, while Verizon chose not to launch a Galaxy S2 version, but wait for the Galaxy Nexus to arrive and enjoy a brief exclusivity of Google's third-generation Nexus smartphone.

We already know that this year's Galaxy S3 U.S. versions will have built-in 4G LTE support, but if the images we saw today are to be believed, then we expect little changes for these devices.

American buyers interested in getting the original GSM Galaxy S2 model – sans LTE support that is – can purchase the device from third-party retailers, such as Amazon, or enter our second Galaxy S3 competition for a chance to win the handset.

Dead Trigger, first-person zombie shooting at its finest, is coming out in June

Posted: 02 Jun 2012 05:27 AM PDT

Want to survive the looming Zombie apocalypse? Future professional zombie hunters can now practice the skills of eradicating the undead on their Android devices, with the upcoming first-person shooter game, the Dead Trigger. Developed by the same team that brought you the blockbuster action game Shadowgun THD, we can expect the same high level visual quality and immersive gameplay.

Dead Trigger puts gamers in a world where a strange infection has brought civilization to a halt, with billions of people dead and many turned into zombies. As one of the few remaining survivors, shooting and blasting those bad boys is the only way to stop becoming an entrée for the hordes of zombies (and to stay alive for another day). But it's not all guns and bombs here, because Dead Trigger also packs an engaging storyline that will gradually reveal itself as you get further into the game.

Check out the trailer.

Looking at the trailer, which compares the regular Android version with the Tegra 3-optimized one, the latter does have more visually rich backdrops and lush graphics. The use of motion captured animations take the realism level up a notch, which is also enhanced by the dynamic fog, lighting, and water effects. The production quality in both versions is a testament at how far gaming experience on Android has come since the early days.

Aside from the issue of graphics, CEO of MADFINGER Games, Marek Rabas, said that they are working hard on the gameplay mechanics as well. While we hope that the on-screen buttons will be intuitive enough, the game does support the use of game controllers.

The Dead Trigger will be released at the end of the month on Google Play and NVIDIA TegraZone.

Meizu MX RE (refurbished) now available for a little over $300

Posted: 02 Jun 2012 05:20 AM PDT

meizu mx re

The official description of the Meizu MX reads "stunningly beautiful". Okay, maybe it's not stunningly beautiful (I haven't seen a truly stunning device yet), but I do consider it to be a beautiful smartphone. Not the most original in the world (it's kind of an iPhone clone) or the slimmest (a Chinese obsession apparently), but certainly appealing to the eye.

Now, the Meizu MX is not a case of beauty without brains. The dual-core Cortex A9 inside is powerful enough to be considered future proof for a couple of years. And the rest of the specs are nothing to be ashamed with either. But perhaps the most appealing trait of Meizu's top of the range device (at least for budget-conscious users like me) is its relatively affordable price tag.

You can have a brand new, unlocked Meizu MX from the OEM's website for about 2399 yuan or $375 at today's rate, which is quite good for a contract-free phone that rivals top products from HTC, Samsung, and others. It's too bad that Meizu's devices are still scarcely available outside China, but that seems to be slowly changing.

Anyway, now you can have a Meizu MX (dual core, not that quad-core version announced for this month) for even less. A Meizu MX RE (read refurbished) goes for 1999 yuan or about $315. The RE series are actually devices returned within the legal refund period, which were repaired, refurbished, and wiped out. The Chinese maker promises that you'll get a like-new device and you have the same one-year warranty you get with the "new" device.

A deal is a deal, and we at Android Authority, know one when we see it. A high-end dual-core Android smartphone for just $315 is amazing, no matter how you look at it. If you have business around China in the following weeks, we suggest you give the Meizu MX RE a thought.

Samsung releases Galaxy S3 source code for multiple regions

Posted: 02 Jun 2012 04:40 AM PDT

As the Galaxy S3 makes its landing in more countries, Samsung has decided to treat the Android community with a sweet present, by making the phone’s source code available on the company's Open Source Release Center website.

You can download the 180MB file of the source code right here. Along with the international GT-I9300 model, Samsung has also provided an updated source file for three additional models of the Galaxy S3 released in other regions. If you have the GT-I9300 MEA, GT-I9300 SEA and GT-I9300 models, the additional 1.2MB update is also ready for download.

You've had time to marvel at the hardware of the Samsung Galaxy S3 for a good while. With the source code in the open, you can start tinkering with the phone's software. It's time for devs community to get busy and work their magic to deliver the amazing creations we got used to.

Samsung has been a rather exemplary figure when it comes to giving developers and modders something to play with. Who says Android phone makers can't have their cake and eat it too? The Korean company, along with several noted others, have proven that releasing the source code of their phones won't be a detrimental factor to sales.

Samsung Galaxy S3 compared to HTC One X – a video review

Posted: 02 Jun 2012 04:36 AM PDT

galaxy s3 vs htc one x video review

Both the Galaxy S3 and the HTC One X are beautiful pieces of gear, no doubt. Both are powered by powerful chips and both lead the benchmark rankings. Both are built with utmost attention to detail, by the two most prestigious Android manufacturers in the world.

So, how could one pick a side in this epic battle? How can one say, with confidence, that the Galaxy S3 is superior to the One X, or the other way? Taking sides it's hard to do, especially since doing so will bring upon you the ire of countless fans of the "losing" side. But we did it anyway in our Galaxy S3 vs. One X review, that we published just hours after we first got our hands on Samsung's new hero device.

Now, our Sam Cater has taken again to comparing the two titans of the 2012 Android lineup, this time on video. Check it out below – Sam pitches the One X and the Galaxy S3 in a 7 minute review that will take you through many of the essential aspects of the phone. You'll see how the two quad-cores fare against each other, from booting times to launching apps, to navigating the user interfaces.

You'll get to hear the difference in the audio output of the two devices and see which one does better at taking snapshots. Sam even succinctly compares the Ice Cream Sandwich implementations of HTC and Samsung – Sense and TouchWiz.

After watching the video, you might reach the same conclusion I did. It's all a matter of feeling. It's so hard to discern between the S3 and the HTC One X that most buyers will end up making an emotional decision, instead of a rational one. Personally, I think that the One X looks and feels better, but I wouldn't look down on anybody for choosing the Galaxy S3. They are that close.

What do you think?

Also, we are giving away another Galaxy S3 in the second edition of our International Giveaway, back at popular demand. Don't miss your chance!

Carmageddon mobile game for Android to be released in Q3

Posted: 02 Jun 2012 03:02 AM PDT

Carmageddon may not mean much to most people nowadays, but back in 1997, when the official car racing / car-crashing / pedestrian-killing game was launched for PC, it certainly made an impression with gamers.

At first sight, it's a simple racing game, in which the player has access to various cars and has to complete various courses. But once inside, you'll quickly find out that you don't have to be the fastest pilot in the parking lot to win any race as long as you're willing to completely destroy the competition and/or run over any innocent pedestrian you can find.

After being launched on Windows and Mac, the game soon made it to gaming consoles including PlayStation and Game Boy Color, and, just like other computer games from the same period, it's getting ready to make the jump to more advanced gaming devices such as iOS/Android smartphones and tablets.

As you can expect, the mobile Carmageddon version will offer players a new gaming experience with better graphics and a redesigned interface to accommodate touch input. In addition to all the car-crashing and pedestrian-killing that you can master, you'll also be able to save the best replay videos and share them with friends that enjoy your Carmageddon passion.

The game is going to be launched in the third quarter for iOS and Android devices, but an actual release date and pricing details are not available at this time. It's also not known what Android smartphones and tablets will be able to run the game initially, although we expect the developer to support as many devices as possible after launch.

We were not surprised to see Rockstar Games release Grand Theft Auto 3 for iOS and Android devices a few months ago, also a best-selling game of the early 2000s. That was a clear signal that we could see more popular games of that period get resurrected and redesigned for play on current smartphones and tablets running various mobile platforms.

Such is the case with Carmageddon, and since the mobile game is going to be launched by Stainless Games, the original creator of the PC title, we wouldn't be surprised to see some of its sequels – three other games are part of the Carmageddon PC series – hit digital stores at some point in the future.

In the mean time, check out the official trailer of the game to get a sense of what you can expect from Carmageddon mobile:
