Xiaomi Mi3: the fastest smartphone of all time
Sep 7th 2013, 18:00, by Kris Carlon

Nothing less than the fastest of all time...or so claims the promises of the Chinese manufacturer and their brand-new, soon-to-be Vice President, Hugo Barra. The Mi3 is one of the few smartphones that rely at least in part on Nvidia's Tegra 4 chip, but there is also a Snapdragon 800 version. And the whole thing is jam-packed with battery despite its slim design and a price that would threaten even Google's Nexus phones. China awaits.

Galaxy Note 3 / Galaxy Gear giveaway from T-Mobile
Sep 7th 2013, 16:45, by Harrison Kaminsky

galaxy-gear-and-note-3

Pre-registering for information on a website has never been so fruitful! In just a few steps on T-Mobile’s site, you could win a combo prize consisting of a Galaxy Note 3 and a Galaxy Gear smart-watch. Pretty sweet, right?

Although you may think that the Gear is nothing more than a notification system at this point, it certainly holds a lot of potential for the future— much like Google Glass.

And yes, while the Gear only currently pairs with the Note 3 and no other Samsung devices at this time, this issue obviously becomes moot if you win the contest! Head on over to the T-Mobile page! Contest entries end on September 15th.

A quick look at receiving a phone call on the LG G Pad 8.3

LG G Pad 8.3

One of the more intriguing features of the LG G Pad 8.3 is its ability to pair up with the LG G2 for more than just tethering. In fact, the "Q Pair" feature is supposed to eventually work with phones made by manufacturers other than LG. That's for another day though. Today, we're taking a brief look at what it looks like when a call comes in on a phone and is then shared with the G Pad tablet.

The idea is that the two devices are tethered, with the call coming in to the phone. But as the phone rings, you also get a pop-up on the tablet, allowing you to take the call, decline it outright, or decline it with an automated response. It looks good, it's dead simple to use — and it's really something we've not seen anyone else do before.

Best NHL apps for Android

On October 1st, the puck will drop for the 2013-14 season of the NHL and for the first time since 2011, a full season will be played. Fans are no doubt excited and you may be wondering what the best apps are to help you keep track of the season. Below are our top 8 hockey apps for Android. If you’d rather watch it than read it, the video is at the bottom.

Official NHL App

08 Official NHL App

First up is the obligatory nod to the official app of the NHL, called NHL Gamecenter. This app features news, standings, scores, and stats from your favorite NHL teams and, if you're willing to shell out the cash for it, you can live stream out-of-market hockey games on your Android device.

The app has its flaws, though. It doesn't perform overly well in comparison to some of these others. For many people, the streaming doesn't work right so they don't get to enjoy it as much. At the end of the day, it delivers the news and stats you need so it's a good option. If this is what you want, you can get it by clicking the button below.

Get it on Google Play

Yahoo! Fantasy Hockey

07 Yahoo! Fantasy Hockey

If you're doing fantasy hockey this year on Yahoo!, then this app is a must have. With it you can change your roster, check league scores, add and drop players, and even check out some of the news with Yahoo!'s Puck Daddy blog. If you're a fantasy hockey buff, this is what you're after.

The Yahoo! Fantasy Hockey leagues have just opened back up so the apps still display stats from last season. We assume an update is in the making or that these old standings will be archived to make way for the new ones. So if you're an early adopter, have patience because it took them a couple of weeks last year too. Check out the button below to download the app.

06 Big Win Hockey

06 Big Win Hockey

Number 6 on our list is Big Win Hockey 2013 and is actually the only hockey game on this list. It's a hockey sim game where you build and customize a team, sim games versus opponents, and earn coins for cards that either give you more players or various boosts.

The game is very simple. This is no EA Sports NHL title. However, for what it is, it's actually pretty fun and doesn't take a lot of time to play. So if you need something to do for a couple of minutes to get through a commercial, this ought to do it. Use the button below to download it.

Yahoo! Sports

05 Yahoo! Sports

Number 5 on our list is the second Yahoo! app to make the list. Unlike the last one, which was for fantasy hockey purposes, this one is strictly for news. It's also the first on the list that has other sports present, so you can look at other sports along with hockey.

The app is fairly easy to use. You can set your favorite teams to get news about them first. You can then check schedules, scores, news, standings, and even leaders in various stat categories. There is nothing really wrong with it, but there is nothing that shouts "wow" at you either. It's a good, solid app. If you want it, use the button below to grab it.

The Score rocks

04 theScore

If you're a fan of our YouTube channel and you watched our best NFL apps, you may recognize this one. As we stated in that list, theScore is a great source for all sports and that includes hockey, which is why it's here again.

In case you didn't see the NFL list, here's the basics for The Score's official app. You can view all the essentials, including league leaders, standings, scores, schedules, news, and even player transactions. It's a well-crafted app that works well and, according to their Twitter handle, they have some big updates coming in the next few weeks, which is always exciting. Insert joke here about Justin Bourne not getting TV show references. To grab up the app, click the button below.

Get it on Google Play

ScoreCenter by ESPN

03 ScoreCenter by ESPN

The first in our top 3 is the second repeat app from the NFL list, which is ESPN's ScoreCenter. While ESPN's coverage of the NHL on shows like Sportscenter is practically nonexistent, their app makes a much better effort to cover the NHL.

Like Yahoo! and The Score, the ESPN app lets you view the essentials such as standings, scores, news, and videos. Their app has one of the best designs on the list, which makes it delightful to use. You can find more frequent news elsewhere, but pretty much everything else at least looks better here.

Get it on Google Play

myNHL

02 myNHL

Number 2 on our list is a nifty little app called myNHL. If you're not a fan of RSS feeds but want to get news from top sites, this is probably a good idea. It's not an app in the traditional sense, but rather a wrapper app for a number of mobile sites from around the NHL.

While many may not be excited about a wrapper application, it does have some good stuff going on. It's the only app on the list that includes the Bleacher Report, SportsNet, Hockey Night in Canada, ESPN, and a number of other blogs and sites all in one spot. If you want an easy way to get it all and don't mind the slower performance, this is a good app to try.

Get it on Google Play

Bleacher Report

01 Bleacher Report

And here it is, the number one rated app by you, the people, and it's the official Bleacher Report app. We actually missed this one when talking about the NFL apps but vowed we would not miss it again. Really, these guys need to work on their keywords. They don't show up in many searches.

As for the app itself. It's really quite unique. What is does is let you pick sports and teams you enjoy. Then, it loads the feeds from various Twitter handles that deal with that news. So if you like NHL, you'll get stuff from CBS Sports to Puck Daddy. Each team follows writers and handles known to give news to the team itself. It's the best out there if you need news at a breakneck pace.

Best NHL Apps leaderboard

Leaderboard

If you take a look at our leader board, you can see how these apps stack up against one another. This list, as usual, was determined by you, the people and not us. There is no bias on our part and in no way did the hypnotic patterns on any of Don Cherry’s jackets affect our decision.

Hockey is one of the most personable sports out there and we expected this app list to be no different. Aside from these, most teams have their own personal app if you want to keep up on just your favorite team. Also, in the video description, I have included a short list of some awesome hockey podcasts below.. Be sure to check out our best podcast apps to find an app to listen to them.

  • Marek vs Wyshynski (from Sportsnet)
  • Backhand Shelf (from The Score)
  • Hockey Central at Noon (also from Sportsnet)
  • The Hockey News podcast
  • Hockey Night in Canada (CBC Radio)
