Chromecast seems to be a huge hit. This little device has an insane amount of potential. There’s just one thing lacking: official apps. Even if an official app isn’t available yet, you can cast tabs from your desktop or laptop, which works quite well if your computer can support it. While poking around some of the Chromecast configuration files, the guys over at GTVHacker found something quite interesting. It seems that a lot of additional apps or receivers are being tested at this time. During this past week’s announcement, Google told us that Pandora and others were coming sometime down the road for Chromecast. Here’s a look at what might be coming soon.

  • Pandora
  • HBO Go
  • Washtington Post
  • AOL ON
  • Qello
  • Revision 3
  • Songza
  • Tic Tac Toe (most likely used just for testing purposes)

Each of these applications can be viewed right now, in their testing phase on the web. However, they don’t do anything besides showing splash pages at this time and some of them don’t even load.

Rumor: Samsung smartwatch shows up online as the SM-V700
Jul 27th 2013, 18:14, by Chris Smith

Samsung

Samsung has been rumored for a while to launch its own smartwatch device and new reports now reveal that such a product (model number SM-V700) has been spotted in inventory systems.

Samsung-Updates has spotted the product on Zauba, a logistics company from India that we have seen in another Samsung-related report the other day – according to Zauba shipment tracking, Samsung may be testing three different Galaxy Note 3 versions (with screen sizes from 5.5-inch to 6.0-inch).

Now the same Zauba lists a SM-VL700WATCH device that, like the Galaxy Note 3 units, is to be used for "R&D purposes." There's only one listing on the website for the device, which says that three units have been shipped on July 24.

A commercial product name has not been mentioned for the device, although previous reports did say it could be called Samsung Gear. Images of the Samsung smartwatch are not available at this time either, but we wouldn't be surprised to see more leaks coming out way assuming the product is real.

Samsung Smartwatch

Sam Mobile reports that its sources can confirm that Samsung Germany "has received a Samsung SmartWatch Prototype and has also begun testing firmwares for the device." The publication says that no other Samsung division in Europe has the smartwatches, suggesting that the fact that Samsung Germany got it may indicate an IFA 2013 launch.

Sony has recently announced its second smartwatch model – the SmartWatch 2 – that will launch in September and other companies including Google, Apple and Microsoft are rumored to release similar smart devices in the future.

Nexus 7 (2013) receives two software updates at launch; tablet not compatible with Google Wallet
Jul 27th 2013, 17:41, by Chris Smith

Nexus 7

Launched earlier than expected, the new Nexus 7 already has two firmware updates in waiting according to a report while an other reveals that the tablet isn't compatible with Google Wallet.

The two updates will upgrade the software to version JWR66N and then JSS15J, according to Android Central. The first one will apparently install itself automatically once the tablet connects to a wireless network for the first time, while the second one will pop up as a regular update notification, letting you update the software at your convenience.

The publication says that both updates seem to be minor, "most likely containing some system fine-tuning and bug fixes."

As for Google Wallet support, Android Police says that the new Nexus 7 isn't compatible with Google Wallet just yet, which is certainly surprising considering that the device does come with NFC powers and that, well, Google Wallet is a Google product.

Google Wallet can't be installed from Google Play or using the latest APK, so we'll just have to wait for more details from Google on this one.

What's interesting though is that Taylor Wimberly, the guy that brought us so many Moto X leaks in the past days (and months) has posted this short message on Google+ the other day:

Just heard +Guy Kawasaki say NFC will become very important on August 1st.....

Presumably, he refers to the Moto X, but then again, Google Wallet is related to NFC. We won't speculate on what Guy Kawasaki meant, but instead we'll wait for the Moto X to become official.

[Opinion] My argument for ending the Android F-word talk once and for all
Jul 27th 2013, 17:27, by Raveesh Bhalla

Whenever anyone mentions Android's "fragmentation problems", my typical reaction is to chuckle and wish to myself that the person would be born as a web developer in their next life to understand what fragmentation really is. But, hey, there's almost always someone who brings up the topic every now and then.

Superuser on Android 4.3 gets sketchy
Jul 27th 2013, 15:25, by Dustin Karnes

According to a recent post by Koushik Dutta, aka – Koush, on Google+, there are some issues with the Superuser functionality in Android 4.3. According to Koush:

“Basically /system is mounted as nosuid to any zygote spawned process (ie, all Android apps). Root will still continue to work via adb shell, etc.

This is a pretty nasty change. It seems that SuperSU works around this by replacing install-recovery.sh to run a su daemon that pipes subsequent through it. Pretty hacky, but understandable why it was done this way.

Will need to look into how to do this in a less invasive fashion, if that is even possible. Of course, if building from source, this change can simply be reverted.”

What do you think of this change? Let us know in the comments.

Samsung could offer the Galaxy Note III in three different display sizes
Jul 27th 2013, 15:09, by Robert Nazarian

galaxy-note-3-sm-n900-zauba-shipments-1

Yesterday we heard that it was confirmed that the Galaxy Note III was confirmed to have a display of 5.7-inches, but the rumors won’t stop as the the speculation is that 5.7-inches might be just one of three offerings from Samsung. A document in the wild suggests that there will be 5.5-inch, 5.7-inch, and 5.99-inch versions. A few months ago, it was first rumored that it would be 5.99-inches, but then 5.7-inches surfaced. Yesterday, we reported that it was originally going to be 5.99-inches, but they scrapped that idea in favor of 5.6-inches after market reaction from the Galaxy Mega sizes.

You will notice different model number of these devices, which generally refer to the destination or carrier. For example, SM-N900V refers to Verizon. The bottomline is that I am sure Samsung has prototypes for many screen sizes, but that doesn’t mean they will be final products. I am sure there were a few prototypes of the Galaxy S 4 as well. It doesn’t make any sense for Samsung to offer three different sizes all about .20 inches apart. But that is just my opinion, we will see what happens at the big announcement in a little under a month.

A new Galaxy Note 3 report seems to suggest that Samsung is testing different sizes for its upcoming flagship smartphone, although it's unclear at this point whether the company is actually thinking of launching the handset in different screen sizes.

While this is an unconfirmed rumor, it looks like there's a document in the wild that lists shipments of several Galaxy Note 3 models with screen sizes of 5.5, 5.7 and 5.99 inches. This would match Samsung's policy of launching a phone for almost every taste – just check out this year's Galaxy S4 family.

Initially spotted by TechKiddy, the screenshot below comes from Indian logistics website Zauba, which shows the Galaxy Note 3 coming in three different sizes.

Considering the variety of Galaxy Note 3 rumors out there that are rather conflicting when it comes to display size – some older ones say 5.99-inch while newer ones say 5.7-inch – such a document makes some sense, and seems to indicate that Samsung may have not chosen the final design of the handset.

Similar reports concerning the nature of the display – flexible or not flexible – as well as fingerprint-reading technology have also circulated recently, suggesting that the design of the handset is far from final.

LG could be the manufacturer of choice for the 2014 Nexus 7

The Nexus 7 was only announced a couple of days ago, but that isn’t stopping the speculation for next year’s edition. So what could the speculation possibly be now? Apparently Google might be dropping ASUS for the next edition in favor of LG according to Analyst Ming-Chi-Kuo. According to Kuo, Google wants to advance the display design.

Lately LG has been making serious strides in the display department for both mobile and TVs, and in many cases sticking it to Samsung. It’s also not like Google and LG are strangers because they worked together on the Nexus 4. Folks, we have a while to go until the next Nexus 7 gets unveiled (if it ever does), but let the rumors start now.

New Nexus 7 receives two updates at launch
Jul 27th 2013, 15:50, by Casey Rendon

Nexus 7

An initial update to build JWR66N and subsequent update to build JSS15J are available

Early adopters of Google's new Nexus 7 are being greeted with software updates right out of the box. The first update will automatically begin as soon as the tablet connects to WiFi for the first time, usually during the initial setup process. The tablet will shut down, boot into recovery, apply an update to bring the build number up to JWR66N, and bring the user back to the setup screen to continuing signing into a Google account.

The second update comes in a more traditional fashion: it is downloaded in the background, and then triggers a system update notification in the notification tray. Once the user accepts the update and it is applied, the build number becomes JSS15J. Both seem to be minor updates, most likely containing some system fine-tuning and bug fixes.

Now if Google would just post the factory images for this model.
