As a refresh, here are the specifications of the HTC One S:

Been looking for a 22-inch Android tablet? ViewSonic grants your wishes

Posted: 26 May 2012 10:57 AM PDT

Samsung may have jump started the race to release both a bigger phone via its 4.8 inch Galaxy S3 and 5.3 inch Galaxy Note, and apparently has a rumored 11.6-inch Galaxy Tab in the works, too. Sadly though, the rumor river has run dry, and Sammy has remained hush hush since the rumors first leaked into our power-blogging claws. Because we haven't heard anything juicy from the Korean tech giant as of late, our laser gaze turns to to Toshiba and its promise to bring out 13.3-inches of Excite(d) tablet goodness, which is supposed to land in June. Thankfully, there’s a new big boy in town.

Because we know that’s not enough to satisfy you, you better hold on to your britches, as ViewSonic is about to take the Android tablet experience to a whole new level by releasing an incredible 22 inches of Android tablet amazement!

ViewSonic, a company synonymous with computer displays, is cooking up something massive, and is planning to introduce a 22-inch tablet hybrid to the world.  The device has been dubbed as a "smart business tablet monitor" by ViewSonic, and will join the ranks of their "Touch and Connect" series, though these are mere prototypes for now.

How about 65 inches of Android tablet goodness?

Well played, good sir. It's a good thing that ViewSonic has only attached the teaser image above, since it lets your imagination run wild. Just think of the possibilities! Thankfully, the company promises to reveal more during COMPUTEX that will be held in Taipei starting from June 5.

Yes, we'll definitely be there to bring you the full scoop on ViewSonic's gargantuan Android tablet (purportedly running Ice Cream Sandwich), its Windows 8 multi-touch display, laser projectors, interactive electronic billboards, and more.

Now tell us, what could you possibly want to do with a 22-inch Android tablet? I can think of one thing that comes to mind…

And to end it off, I’ll just say “that’s what she said.” There. I said it. Now – your turn.

Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos announced, unveiled as a dual-sim phone

Posted: 26 May 2012 10:19 AM PDT

Samsung has just announced the availability of the new Galaxy Ace Duos, a new dual-sim phone which is said to have the ability to forward a call received on one SIM to the other SIM via the feature called “Dual SIM always on.” For those who have been following Samsung’s releases, you may recall that the Galaxy Ace Duos had been launched sometime in February. Back then,  Samsung said Galaxy Ace Duos was supposed to be a dual-SIM phone too. Truth be told, it doesn’t really have a Dual-SIM capability. The phone runs on both GSM and CDMA built-in connectivity.

But as mentioned in the title, this time around the newly announced Galaxy Ace Duos is indeed a dual-sim phone supporting GSM+GSM and 7.2Mbps HSDPA. Under the hood of the Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos, nothing really spectacular can be found. It has a 3.5-inch 320-x480 touchscreen, 832MHz processor, 5MP camera, 512MB of RAM, 3GB of internal storage plus microSD card support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a 1300 mAh battery. The device runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread with no official word yet on an ICS update. I doubt it will happen, since the device may not meet the power requirements of Android 4.

And now for the most important information of all. The Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos will be initially released in Russia this June. Samsung plans to gradually roll it out in other areas stretching from Europe to SE Asia.

First video sample from Google’s Project Glass

It seems as if Moore’s Law is standing firm and being proven correct with the advancements of late, in social technology. Let’s take a quick peek at the undertaking of Google to meld reality and interweave it in the threads of cyberspace. This technology has actually been around a while and it’s called augmented reality, but Google appears to be taking it to a whole new level of surreal. In the modern world, our lives are being increasingly shaped and fundamentally changed by the progression of how cyberpsace is viewed and used.

Project Glass, by Google, merely intends to make life easier by helping you do what you already do, in a more fashionable and flexible way. Imagine a world with less tablets, smartphones, and notebooks meaning less resources being used to manufacture devices. Imagine the impact of having all your favorite Google tools at, literally, the blink of an eye. This is the world Project Glass envisions.

As far as specs go, nobody knows much about those, but we do know this video was shot in 720P and most, if not all, of the features shown will be made available to buyers of this new technology. For those ahead of the curve, this may be the next big thing to take notice of: wearable computing.

What do you think about Project Glass? Drop us feedback in the comments below!

Lenovo Thinkpad finally gets a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich in UK, coming soon in the US

Posted: 26 May 2012 08:52 AM PDT

Remember when we told you that the Lenovo Thinkpad Android tablet would be getting a taste of Ice Cream too? Well, it’s starting to happen right now in the UK and some areas in Western Europe. Some members of the Lenovo Community Forum are reporting that ICS has been rolled out to their Thinkpad tablet via an OTA (over the air) update. One member posted that US certification for the roll-out is scheduled for June 18th while the rest of the world will have the ICS update delivered to their Thinkpads one month shortly thereafter.

Meanwhile, those who have received the update are saying that Ice Cream Sandwich has made quite a few improvements to the functionality and speed of their Thinkpads, particularly in the areas of GPS functionality, faster performance, and compatibility with Chrome Beta for Android.

So, if you happen to own the Lenovo Thinkpad and purchased it in the UK, then you might be in for a treat. Try checking the update settings on your tablet, and let us know if you’re in store for some ICS action! You might just find Ice Cream Sandwich waiting for you.

And, having updated my Samsung Galaxy Note to ICS a couple of days ago, I can assure you that you’ll definitely like Ice Cream Sandwich. As for those in the US – just be patient. Pretty soon, your Thinkpad will have a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich too.

So that’s one more tablet maker hopping on board the ICS bandwagon – who’s next? Anyone out there have any thoughts on the improvements baked into ICS for their Thinkpad? Let us know!

LTE-enabled Transformer Pad TF300 heading to AT&T?

Posted: 26 May 2012 05:37 AM PDT

ASUS-Transformer-Pad-300

The debate around WiFi-only vs 3G/4G-enabled tablets has been raging for a while now.

WiFi-only supporters believe that the benefits of their choice are obvious, with the lower costs associated with the WiFi-only variant. In addition, more and more public places (airports, stations, coffee shops, etc.) now feature paid or, sometimes, even free WiFi connectivity.

Of course, those in the cell-enabled camp argue that, while public WiFi is growing, it’s certainly not enough. Even with the higher cost of devices and the need of an additional data plan, 3G/4G-enabled tablet owners claim that it’s a small price to pay for the ability to always stay connected.

Today’s good news is that the consumers looking for cellular connectivity will soon get the option to buy another amazing Android tablet. ASUS, which has so far released only WiFi-only versions of its tablets in the US, seems to be looking at bucking the trend. We know that because an LTE-enabled version of the budget-friendly Transformer Pad TF300, the Transformer Pad TF300TL, made an appearance in the FCC e-filing database.

The filing shows that the TF300TL will not only support HSPA on the 850 Mhz and 1900 Mhz bands, but will also support LTE on the 700 Mhz and 1700 Mhz bands. These are the bands used by AT&T, which gives us the possible destination of the device once launched. ASUS’ pad would be a great addition to AT&T’s already impressive tablet lineup, which features Android-powered devices from HTC, Pantech, and Samsung, as well as the iPad.

The WiFi-only Transformer Pad TF300 (by the way, we are giving three away) boasts impressive specifications, including a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor. The Tegra 3 processor unfortunately does not play well with LTE radios, so it is likely that the Transformer Pad TF300TL will feature a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor.

There is nothing set in stone as of now, but if I was an AT&T customer, I would hold off from buying or upgrading to a new tablet just yet, and wait for more concrete information about the possible release of the Transformer Pad TF300TL. You can view the complete FCC filing here.

What are your thoughts? Would you rather own a 4G-variant of a tablet or is WiFi more than enough? Are you excited about an LTE-version of the Transformer Pad TF300?

The veil lifts on the LG LS860 Cayenne – new pic and specs emerge

Posted: 26 May 2012 05:15 AM PDT

The LG LS860 “Cayenne” is certainly not camera shy. After we’ve seen it yesterday in all it’s naked glory, the ever resourceful guys at Brief Mobile have uncovered a new image of the slider phone. More importantly, this new report brings along the confirmed specifications of the phone, which will, no doubt, please QWERTY phone aficionados.

It seems we've underestimated just how powerful the LG LS860 is going to be. Instead of the 1.2GHz Snapdragon S3 processor that we reported yesterday, it’s now confirmed that the LG LS860 will sport the much more powerful dual-core 1.2GHz S4 Krait processor. On top of such a desirable processor, the LG LS860 will come with a 4-inch IPS WVGA display, 8GB internal storage, 1 GB RAM, 5MP rear camera, VGA front camera, NFC, 1,700mAh battery, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

And let's not forget about the full slide-out keyboard that the LG LS860 will be packing. Considering that the phone comes with a 5-row QWERTY keyboard, we say LG has done a pretty good job making it quit slim, at only 12.2mm thickness.

All told, the LG LS860 – also known as the Cayenne – is shaping up to be one fine offering from the other Korean manufacturer. The phone will reportedly come to Sprint, but we don't have any information on its availability and pricing for now.

Let's just say that LG and Sprint will want to push the phone out before the holiday season. We'll keep you posted!

Shipment delay hits Pebble Blue Samsung Galaxy S3, will you settle for the white model?

Posted: 26 May 2012 04:52 AM PDT

There's some potentially bad news for those who have been eyeing the Pebble Blue model of the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Sammy apparently ran into some problems with manufacturing the blue casings of the phone, which may cause delays to its release into the market. According to some reports, unspecified production problems with the blue variant of the Galaxy S3  have reportedly forced Samsung to bin 600,000 blue covers. Ouch!

Collated reports from the blogosphere seem to suggest that several retailers and carriers don't stock enough of the Pebble Blue variant of the phone, while those that do carry the blue model have mentioned about possible shipment delays. Some retailers in the UK, where the phone will be launched on May 30, don't seem to be affected.

Since the problem apparently will only be solved by June, it's a good thing that Samsung isn't launching the Galaxy S3 simultaneously worldwide. The good news is the production of the white Samsung Galaxy S3 isn't affected at all, so we're sure there'll be enough supplies to quell the hunger of customers longing for Sammy’s powerhouse.

As always, we'll let you know once we hear more from Samsung or other sources.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Virgin Mobile USA cuts no-contract price of LG Optimus V to $28

Posted: 26 May 2012 04:35 AM PDT

The Memorial Day holiday, which falls on Monday, is usually accompanied by Memorial Day sales! If price is the only thing that's stopping you from grabbing smartphone, specifically of the Android variety, you might want to check out the latest deal that Virgin Mobile USA has for one of its Android offerings, the LG Optimus V.

Virgin Mobile is slashing its non-contract price of the LG Optimus V to $28, which is quite a bargain compared to the phone's original $130 price tag. There's a small catch to this sub-$30 offer though; you will have to use at least a month of Virgin's Let's Talk prepaid service, which costs from $35 to $55. After taking into account everything, you can have the LG Optimus V delivered just by paying a grand total of $78. Remember that this  price already includes unlimited usage of text, email, data and web – as well as 300 Anytime Minutes — for one month.

Here's a refresher of LG's entry level phone, the Optimus V. The phone ships with a 3.2-inch HVGA display, 600MHz TI OMAP 3610 processor, 3.2MP rear camera, and Android 2.2 Froyo. Though it only has 160MB internal memory, the LG Optimus V does come with a microSD card slot (up to 32GB extra storage).

The LG Optimus V is currently being restocked on the website, but Virgin Mobile said they will honor the offer for customers who order it before the end of the promotion, which is on May 28. You'll just have to wait longer for the phone to be shipped out.

CEO Interview

Dennis Lee, CEO, PlayUp USA

1.Tell us a little bit about yourself, and how you got into Android development.

At PlayUp, we're committed to changing and enhancing the way sports fans experience sports.  By developing on Android, hardcore and casual sports fans alike are able to connect, chat and engage with each other over their favorite sports action.

2. What initially attracted you to the Android platform?

With Android, we are able to provide unique experiences to our users.  Because of the breadth of Android's ecosystem, with multiple handset manufacturers and carriers, we are offered flexibility in our development to pick and choose features we feel will make the most impact to our user base.

3. How did you come across the idea behind the PlayUp app?

We, like all sports fans, love to talk about sports…it's really about all we do each day.  What really makes an impact is seeing how our knowledge and opinions match up against other sports fans across the world.  This is the power of PlayUp.  This is what excites and motivates us to keep doing what we're doing.

4. How many people did you have working on the development of the PlayUp app?

With all that we've put out, I'm shocked our team isn't double what it is today. With the hours our staff puts in, I'm extremely proud of what we've been able accomplish thanks to the dedication of our staff.

5. What are some of the other apps you have created and how did you market those applications?

Right now, PlayUp is what we have available to market.  We're working both on exciting apps to come, but more importantly features within the PlayUp app…really building the value to users, partners and developers alike.

6. When you first started learning development for Android what were some of the obstacles you had to overcome?

Android offers so much in terms of capability.  Really, it was not letting scope creep get in the way of launching. With much we want to achieve, it's a constant battle to get as much out with the time available.  In short, Android allows our creative minds to flow…and trust me…we come up with some totally awesome stuff.

7. What does it take to make a great app?

Knowing what you want to achieve and sticking with it.  There's so much out there…it's really hard to differentiate yourself.  At PlayUp, that's why we're committed to such a big and lofty goal…committing to changing and enhancing the way sports fans experience sports.  We're here to make an impact.

8. What do you recommend for new developers?

If you're looking to attract sports fans, look out for what's to come from PlayUp.  We're building tools that will make development much much easier.
