Contest: Win one of two $20 gift cards or one of twenty-five free copies of Poweramp and Volume+

Posted: 26 May 2012 11:29 AM PDT

The folks over at MaxMP and Meltus contacted me for a little giveaway this holiday weekend. We’ve got two $20 gift cards to your favorite web store such as Amazon, Newegg, or something else. They also threw in 25 free copies of Poweramp and Volume+. Poweramp is a major veteran when it comes to third party music players in the Google Play Store. With features like a 10 band optimized graphical equalizer for all supported formats, separate Bass and Treble adjustment, downloading of missing album art, a tag editor, lyric support, and so much more, it’s obvious that this is the best player around. To top things off, you will also get Volume+, which is the perfect compliment to Poweramp. It boosts up your overall volume including your bass/treble and you can save/load custom EQ settings. This one also works with other apps like Google Music, Pandora, Slacker and other apps for those times when you want to take things to the cloud. Poweramp is priced at $4.99 and Volume+ is priced at $1.99. If you’re doing the math, your total prize value is $6.98.

All you have to do is head over to our forum post and tell us your favorite song right now. We will pick 2 random winners for both $20 gift cards and 25 random winners for both Poweramp and Volume+. You have until tomorrow May 27th at 11:59pm EST and we will announce the winners on Monday May 28th. Good luck!!!

Also, MaxMp is working on a major update to Poweramp, which would bring it to version 3.0. They want you guys to tell them what new features you want and/or if there are any particular bugs that you’ve noticed. You can head over to their survey page and let them know.

Click here to enter and hit the break for Google Play Store links for both apps.

ViewSonic Teases 22-Inch ‘Smart Business Tablet Monitor’

Posted: 26 May 2012 09:56 AM PDT

If you thought Toshiba’s 13-inch AT330 was huge, wait until you get a load of this. ViewSonic just issued a teaser image containing what could eventually be the largest Android tablet on the face of the earth. I say eventually because at this point it’s just a prototype but if it ever makes it to production this won’t be the tablet you so effortlessly lug around in your backpack every day. As part of ViewSonic’s “Touch and Connect” series prototypes, this 22-inch “smart business tablet monitor” runs Android ICS, but will also be offered in a less appealing Windows 8 version.

Set to debut on June 5th at Computex in Taipei, this behemoth of a tablet is said to be unveiled alongside a few other tablet monitors, a new cloud storage solution, and other high-tech ViewSonic gadgets. No pricing or availability has been suggested although you can expect more details in the coming weeks.

Complimentary case with pre-ordered Evo 4G LTE, courtesy of Sprint and HTC

Posted: 26 May 2012 06:39 AM PDT

It’s not a secret that the HTC Evo 4G LTE launch delay has been the talk of the town lately among the Android community. Evo ready customers should have already been kickstanding and shutter buttoning a week ago and still only a small portion of the pre-order early birds are just now receiving handsets.

Well the Now Network recognizes and appreciates everyone’s patience and has included a free gel cover with pre-ordered Evos as a thank you gesture along with an apology letter. ”HTC and Sprint want to thank you for your patience as we know you have been anticipating the arrival of your new HTC Evo 4G LTE. Please accept this accessory as a small token of our appreciation and thanks.”

It’s unclear for how long Sprint and HTC plan on including the free case, but at least they are making an effort and acknowledging the inconvenience of the situation.

Xperia Play Android 4.0 Upgrade Has Been Canceled

Posted: 26 May 2012 12:48 AM PDT

Sony Mobile has confirmed that the Xperia Play’s upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich has been canceled, leaving the PlayStation-certified smartphone on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Sony explains that compatibility and stability issues with the Play’s gaming features are to blame.

Other 2011 Xperia phones are still on track to receive the upgrade to ICS, including the Xperia Arc, Xperia Neo, Xperia Mini, Xperia Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, and Xperia Active. These devices will begin receiving an optional 4.0.4 update through the PC Companion app starting next week.

Existing Xperia devices already running 4.0.3 will be getting an update to 4.0.4 around the same time frame. These devices include the Xperia Arc S, Xperia Ray, and Xperia Neo V.

Late June is the date for the Xperia S to get ICS, and the Xperia P and Xperia U should receive it in Q3.

Vlingo Labs Beta App Tests New Siri-Like Features For Ice Cream Sandwich Devices

Posted: 26 May 2012 12:13 AM PDT

Ever since Samsung announced S-Voice, an exclusive voice-activated virtual assistant for the Galaxy S III, people have been scrambling to try to install it on other devices. S-Voice is actually powered by Vlingo, which has its own voice app in the Play Store that has been around for quite some time.

Now, Vlingo has released Vlingo Labs, a beta version of their latest virtual assistant that provides much of the same functionality as S-Voice minus the device restrictions. Labs is where Vlingo will test new features, such as being able to wake up Vlingo with a spoken word, SMS/search/voice calling dictation, and truly hands-free operation. These features, when fully fleshed out and tested in the Labs app, will then graduate to the full Vlingo app.

Vlingo Labs looks and acts a bit more like Apple’s Siri, bringing Android closer to parity with iOS’s much heralded voice assistant.

Labs only supports U.S. or Canadian devices running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Download it from the Play Store link or QR code below.
