Sprint 'One Up' joins the early upgrade party
Sep 16th 2013, 18:06, by Craig Hurda

The fourth major U.S. carrier, Sprint,  has now released their version of an early phone upgrade program.  Sprint is planning the launch of their “One Up” program on September 20th, filling out your options list of early upgrade carriers, according to CNET.

Sprint_One_Up_Chart_610x323

The plan is very similar to T-Mobile, where you pay for a full-price device via monthly installments in lieu of the more traditional subsidized price. The return on this investment is the capability to upgrade to a new device after only 1 year on contract (as opposed to the traditional 2), along with a $15/month discount on Sprint’s unlimited voice/messaging/data plans. Also like the Uncarrier, Sprint will offer some discounted rates designed to draw in adoption.

After a year, a customer can upgrade to a new phone by trading in the device. A customer signs up for One Up with an Unlimited, My Way or All-In plan. One Up provides a $15 discount, which allows for an unlimited talk, text, and data plan that costs as little as $65 a month. T-Mobile’s comparable unlimited plan costs $70 a month.

Current Sprint customers can get on the action, too, though some higher restrictions can/will apply.

Samsung Galaxy Mega (6.3) coming to US Cellular Sept. 17
Sep 16th 2013, 17:49, by Andrew Martonik

Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3

The latest big phone comes to one of the smaller carriers

Samsung's latest maybe-tablet maybe-phone device, the Galaxy Mega 6.3, is making its way to US Cellular this week for $149.99 on a two-year contract. Just as a quick refresher, the Galaxy Mega 6.3 is that giant device with a 6.3-inch 720p display, 1.7GHz dual-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM and running Android 4.2.2 with many of Samsung's latest software enhancements on top. US Cellular customers will also have access to LTE data, naturally.

If you're looking to pick up the Galaxy Mega 6.3 on US Cellular, you can do so online starting tomorrow for $149.99 on-contract after an "instant rebate." Those wishing to pick it up in-store will have to wait two more days to September 19th and will have the same pricing offered. Unfortunately US Cellular is only offering the "Nova Black" color of the handset at this time.

Google buys Bump, the easy to use data transferring app
Sep 16th 2013, 18:05, by Chris Chavez

tumblr_inline_mt31wjpHf31rdf8w9

You guys remember Bump? It was an app that was all the rage a few years back and was used to easily transferring contact info, pictures, files, etc. between 2 devices by simply “bumping” them together. Following the recent trend of tech companies like Motorola, Wimm, Waze, and others getting snatched up by Google, Bump is now the latest addition to the house that Larry and Sergey built.

Bump’s CEO and co-founder David Lieb revealed the “good news” via the company blog, saying they “couldn’t be more thrilled” to be joining up with the folks over at Google. While there was no word on what Google plans on doing with Bump, our hope (as always) is that this will be incorporated into future versions of Android, where Bump’s proprietary technology could help supercharge features like Android Beam, wireless photo sharing, or possibly even Google Wallet.

Bump has currently garnered between 10 and 50 million downloads in the Play Store alone and is one of the bigger names in mobile. More recently, the company released a 2nd app into the Play Store dubbed Flock, an app for allowing the easy sharing of photos with others during the same event (much like Samsung’s Buddy Photo Share app). It was, no doubt, the failure to monetize their services that led them into Google’s arms, although the exact amount of money behind the deal hasn’t been disclosed.

Verizon customers can get the HTC One for $49 from Best Buy
Sep 16th 2013, 17:31, by Dima Aryeh

After many months of waiting, Verizon recently made their model of the HTC One available to the public. This is after the other three carriers had been selling it for a while. It’s ridiculous, but what is the best way to make up for an extremely long and unreasonable wait? A nice discount, of course.

If you head over to Best Buy, you can net an HTC One on Verizon for only $49.99 with a new two-year contract. This is $50 less than what the Sprint model goes for on Best Buy, $100 less than the AT&T model, and $150 less than the general retail price. You’ll be saving a good chunk of money on Verizon, which is generally pricey.

You can buy the phone in either silver or the new blue color. Sadly, the red (a perfect color for Verizon) is a Sprint exclusive, and black doesn’t seem to be available. If you’re interested, hit the source link to go to the Best Buy website and get ordering! But if you wanted to wait for more information on the HTC One Max, we couldn’t blame you.

T-Mobile Galaxy Note 3 pre-orders start September 18; in-store and online October 2
Sep 16th 2013, 16:13, by Sean Riley

T-Mobile announced this morning that pre-orders for its Galaxy Note 3 will start September 18. If you pre-order, your Note 3 will ship “on or before October 2,” Hopefully you’ll end up being one of the first on the block with it, as that’s the date that they will be hitting T-Mobile retail locations.

As we covered previously, you can secure yourself a T-Mobile Note 3 for just $199 down and then $21 a month over the next two years on their Simple Choice Plan.

At launch you Note 3 owners will hold the lone smartphone that can pair up with Samsung’s Galaxy Gear, which will also be available through T-Mobile on October 2. The Galaxy Gear will run you an additional $299 to really stick it in the faces of everyone else that you are the current pinnacle of technological advancement.

With standard screen sizes on phones encroaching on the Note territory, the Note 3 faces more challenges than its predecessors in what was once the phablet niche. We should start to see whether the pen itself is a compelling feature for Note buyers or if it is instead simply a large screen that most Note buyers have been after.

Are you pre-ordering or planning to buy a Note 3? What’s the main selling point for you?

Show Press Release
The Galaxy Note 3 pairs sophisticated design and exceptional functionality in a thin, lightweight smartphone with a brilliant 5.7-inch Full HD Super AMOLED® display, which provides breathtaking visuals and crystal-clear detail. The refined S Pen™ with Air Command™ delivers innovation to help users take control of their day with various functions including Action Memo™, Pen Window™ and S Finder. When paired with Samsung's first wearable experience, the Galaxy Gear™ companion smartwatch, the Galaxy Note 3 experience is extended to the wrist and allows customers to interact with their phone like never before.

The Galaxy Note 3 will be available to pre-order on September 18 for $199.99 down with 24 equal monthly device payments of $21[1] (plus taxes and fees) with T-Mobile's Simple Choice Plan. Pre-ordered smartphones are expected to start shipping on or before October 2. The Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy Gear companion smartwatch (sold separately) will launch nationwide at participating T-Mobile retail stores, select dealers, national retail stores and online at www.T-Mobile.com on October 2. Moto X, Droid Mini, Ultra, and Maxx don't support Square Register or Jawbone Up
Sep 16th 2013, 17:11, by Derek Ross

Square Register and Jawbone Up

Owners of the latest Android phones from Motorola will be saddened to know that Square Register and Jawbone Up accessories aren’t currently supported for the Motorola Moto X, Motorola DROID Mini, Motorola DROID Ultra, and Motorola DROID Maxx. More specifically, according to Motorola’s official support page: accessory devices that have a microphone input, but no microphone output won’t work at this time. Even though PayPal Here wasn’t specifically mentioned, many users, including myself, aren’t able to get it working as well.

We reached out to Motorola customer support to see if this was a hardware limitation, software limitation that could be fixed via an upcoming OTA, or if the vendors of these devices needed to update their applications to get everything working. According to our support conversation, Motorola is aware of the issue, and it’s definitely on their radar. Others seem to have similar results over on the official Motorola forums.

Square Support Soon

It looks like future support for TRS (tip, ring, and sleeve) plug devices is coming in a future software update. If you were looking to purchase one of these Motorola phones, is this a deal breaker for you or are you hopeful for a timely software update in the future? Me, I’m just going to tether to my Nexus 7 (2013) for the time being.
