It's unlikely the Chromecast will ever support local or networked music and video

The Chromecast was announced with a heavy amount of fanfare. Obviously the price played a major role in that, but it was also because many of us envisioned unlimited possibilities. However, it might not be the device we were all hoping for. As of right now, all Chromecast development is at a standstill since the Google Cast SDK is only for whitelisted devices. But Koushik Dutta was able to break that and release his own app called AllCast, which can play video from your Gallery, Dropbox, and Drive. Unfortunately, Google’s latest update to the Chromcast disabled the ‘video_playback’ support from his application so it won’t work.

Now it’s possible that Google is only doing this for the short term since the Google Cast SDK is only Preview, but Koush and myself are thinking that Google might never allow playback from external sources. If this is true, it’s likely to appease the MPAA, RIAA and services like Netflix and Hulu. Companies like Netflix want to sell subscriptions, and if local or network playback is disabled, they have more of a chance.

This is really distressing since it’s unlikely Netflix, Hulu, or any other provider would lose all that many subscriptions if local or networked playback were allowed. If it’s pirating everyone is worried about, it continues to be a small segment of the population. Seriously folks, how many people have their own media server? Let’s also not forget that many people would like to play legitimate videos on their TVs such as their the first steps their child takes or that first basket they scored. Then there is the people who legitimately rip their purchased DVDs and would like to play them, but unfortunately it’s illegal to play any owned content on anything other than what it was intended for.

I suspect that Google may never officially move the SDK out of preview mode, which would mean they would have to approve all apps before they are released. As far as the amount of apps goes, I feel confident that the majority of important stuff will eventually get released since they are “legitimate” in the eyes of Google. You can expect to see apps from Pandora, Hulu, Slacker Radio, Spotify some day, but apps that play your own local or networked content will most likely never get approved. I know you can play local video through the Chromecast extension in the Chrome Browser, but the experience is nothing to brag about.

You’re probably thinking that developers will always a workaround, but even Koushik Dutta himself is concerned. He said on Google+, “The policy seems to be a heavy handed approach, where only approved content will be played through the device. The Chromecast will probably not be indie developer friendly. The Google TV team will likely only whitelist media companies. I’d strongly suggest holding off on buying a Chromecast until we can see how Google chooses to move forward on third party applications.”

Hopefully both Koush and myself are wrong, but my dream of being able to open the Plex app on my phone or tablet and cast videos is slightly shattered. Unfortunately, I am not a developer so I can’t help break any code, but I will continue to dream.

Android World Update # Google updates Play Store developer policies, forbids notification bar ads, forced home screen shortcuts and other annoyances

Google updates Play Store developer policies, forbids notification bar ads, forced home screen shortcuts and other annoyances
Aug 25th 2013, 17:24, by Jared Peters

Google_Play_Store_Logo_456

I’m sure all of you have downloaded an app at some point that did something annoying with advertisements. Whether that was forcing you to place a shortcut to some weird website on your home screen or annoying you with ads in your notification bar every day, there’s a handful of sneaky tricks developers have tried to get you to look at ads. Technically, you can’t really fault those developers because Google never said it wasn’t okay to make apps that did that, but it’s pretty clear that Google didn’t like the practice, as they’ve updated their developer policies for the Play Store to explicitly block that type of behavior, among other things.

The developer policies have a bunch of updated information in them, including explicitly blocking apps that place ads or links to ads in the notification bar, as well as apps that modify your device in any way without your knowledge or place home screen shortcuts or bookmarks for advertising purposes. There are a few other updated policies, including blocking apps with misleading information in them, such as apps that have fake reviews, excessive and useless keyword tags, and apps that have deceptive developer or website names. No more small developers pretending to be big developers to cash in on someone else’s popularity!

If you want to check out the complete updated policies page, check the link below. Remember, though, developers have almost a full month to make changes to their apps to comply with these guidelines, so you may not see any difference right away, but this is definitely a step in the direction to cleaning up the Play Store a bit.

TalkAndroid_Weekly_Recap

We had another busy week at TalkAndroid so here’s a recap of all the top stories. Rumors surrounding the Nexus 5 started heating up last week. Both Motorola and LG were rumored OEMs, but it seemed like the door was closed on Motorola. However, this week the door reopened. So at this point, we really don’t have a definitive clue as to who is going to make the Nexus 5, or even if there is really going to be one. The Moto X officially launched with AT&T, but no official word from any of the other carriers. Motorola says it’s only a matter of days, and if your heart desires a developer edition, you might be able to purchase one this week. We also had major updates to a few key apps such as Google Keep, YouTube, and SwiftKey. It’s time to get caught up and get ready for another exciting week.

Developer Series: Inferno and his boredom-killing game ''bopbop''
Aug 25th 2013, 16:00, by Loie Favre

We had the chance to interview Diego Rodriguez, aka Inferno, an Italian developer with a strong background in information technology which he studied in Bologna for 5 years. After graduation, he sought to establish his own portfolio, by gaining real app developing experience for Android and in just a short time, has already received lots of success in Google Play with his app bopbop. Though he loves working as an Indie app developer, he is eager to join forces with major developing companies in the near future in order to build on his already strong set of skills.

LG G Pad to launch by the end of September, report says
Aug 25th 2013, 15:12, by Chris Smith

LG Logo

LG's rumored G Pad tablet is said to be unveiled this September at IFA 2013 in Berlin, Germany, and to launch in the weeks after the event, at least in some markets.

A Korean report says that according to officials familiar with the matter, an LTE version of the LG G Pad will be launched by Verizon in the USA (a release date is not given though) and that a Wi-Fi-only version will be available in South Korea, where mobile operators are apparently not interested in a cellular version of the tablet yet. Details about other countries are not available at this point.

The tablet is expected to pack an 8.3-inch IPS display with WUXGA resolution (1920 x 1200) and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor instead of the previously rumored Snapdragon 800 CPU.

LG isn't new to making tablets, although the Android mobile device maker is yet to come out with a successful model. LG has already confirmed that it's working on tablets again, with the Bluetooth SIG and FCC also confirming that such a device is in the works.

From the Editor's Desk: What I wielded in 1997
Aug 25th 2013, 15:33, by Phil Nickinson

TFT

My mother, as my family has known for some time, is a bit of a pack rat. Quite possibly a borderline hoarder. That fact became even more apparent after my wife and I had our first daughter a little more than seven years ago. That's when toys I played with as a young child started reappearing at their house for the new grandkid. Toys that I had outgrown long before we moved to that new house when I was 11 or 12, and where my parents have lived for the two dozen years since.

So it wasn't that much of a surprise last week when my bother appeared at my house, manila folder in hand. Its contents: The invoice from the computer they had built for me for my freshman year of college at the University of Florida. In 1997. Pack rat, indeed.

You gotta love these specs, though:

  • IBM/Cyrix 200+ 6x86 CPU. That's 200 MHz.
  • 16 megabytes of RAM. Megabytes, folks.
  • ATI 3D Pro Turbo video card with 4MB of RAM.
  • Seagate 2.5 gigabyte hard drive.
  • 33.6k modem with full freaking duplex and speakerphone.
  • SoundBlaster 16 3D sound card.
  • 15-inch Optiquest monitor. (With VGA resolution, if I recall correctly.)
  • And Windows 95.

Those were good times. How did those computers even work? (Also: Whoa, I am old.)

The price, however, is almost embarrassing, now that I think about it. $1,500, including all the unnecessary bundled software. That was the last time I had someone build me a machine, however, until I bought my first laptop in December 2009 when I started this job.

HTC One Android 4.3 update apparently leaked, available as custom ROM
Aug 25th 2013, 14:04, by Chris Smith

HTC One

A pre-release Android 4.3 version for the HTC One is already available as a custom ROM, with the full Android 4.3 build expected to be released in the coming weeks.

Well known developer LlabTooFeR has posted the ROM on xda-developers – the Maximus HD 12.0.0 ROM, which is based on firmware version 3.09.401.1. – and according to Android Central he will release the "untouched firmware" on August 28, at 10 AM GMT.

A few days ago, HTC confirmed that the U.S. and Canadian HTC One versions and the HTC Droid DNA will be moved directly to Android 4.3 by the end of September, so we're not surprised to see the software get leaked considering that it should be released in the coming weeks.

In case you want to experience Maximus HD 12.0.0, you can check out the Source links below for detailed set up information, although we'll remind you that we don't encourage you to install any custom ROM on your devices, and whatever you put your device through falls under your responsibility.

That said, here's what Maximus HD 12.0.0 has to offer:

  • New Base 3.09.401.1
  • Android 4.3
  • Added Bluetooth 4.0 LE support
  • Added OpenGL ES 3.0 Support
  • Added Google Wi-Fi Scanning Feature
  • Added Google Games
  • Added Ability to Wipe Device Remotely
  • Added Ability to use HTC TV in countries without TV programs available.
  • Updated Kernel
  • Updated AppDrawer
  • Updated System Fonts
  • Updated OEM Apps
  • Many other changes

Are you installing Maximus HD 12.0.0, or are you waiting for the official Android 4.3 update?

32GB Moto X Developer Edition coming soon, Motorola reveals
Aug 25th 2013, 14:42, by Chris Smith

Moto X

Motorola has revealed on its website that the Moto X Developer Edition is coming soon, without revealing when this version of the handset will be launched.

According to the information posted by the company, the Developer Edition model will have 32GB of storage and will come with the words "Developer Edition" engraved on the back.

The company says the phone will have "of course" an unlockable bootloader, but reminds you in footnotes that unlocking the bootloader of the phone "voids all warranties and may cause serious harm to your device."

Moto X Developer Edition

A price for the 32GB Moto X Developer Edition is not listed, but we expect it to sell for full price, or around $630, which is what carriers will charge for the off-contract 32GB Moto X model.

Also, it's not clear at this time whether custom Developer Edition versions can be ordered – the image above shows the phone in standard white.

As we said before, the phone can be already ordered from AT&T, with MotoMaker customization support coming soon. Other U.S. carriers including Verizon, Sprint and U.S. Cellular will also have the device in stores soon.

The fancy wooden back covers for the Moto X may cost an extra $50 per smartphone, according to new details found tucked inside Motorola’s website. The guys at Droid Life noticed that the back side of the Moto X could be offered in four colors (Teak, Bamboo, Ebony, and Rosewood) and could fetch a premium when it goes on sale later this year. Presumably, there’s a formal announcement and outlining of details for the wood back.

Would you pay an extra $50 for the wooden back?

Leaked render outs Sony Xperia Z1 in black, white and purple
Aug 25th 2013, 13:06, by Alex Dobie

Xperia Z1

Xperia Z, with a side of bezels

Thanks to a wealth of pre-release leaks, there's not much we haven't seen of the Sony Xperia Z1 (or "Honami") at this point. But now there's an official-looking render of the device to confirm what we've been seeing for the past few months -- a phone very similar in design to the older Xperia Z, complete with hefty bezels.

The image from Chinese forum Digi-Wo shows the Z1 in the same colors used by the Xperia Z and Xperia Z Ultra -- black, white and purple -- with matching software, too. The back of the purple device shows off one of the Z1's most talked-about features, its 20-megapixel rear camera with Sony G Lens. Elsewhere, the Xperia Z1 is rumored to pack similar hardware to the Z Ultra -- a Snapdragon 800 CPU, 2 GB of RAM and a 5-inch screen.

We're expecting to see the Xperia Z1 unveiled at Sony's big pre-IFA press conference on Sept. 4, and we'll be live from Berlin to bring you full coverage of the phone.
