ReKey gives Master Key vulnernability patch for rooted Android users

ReKey

So it’s been a few weeks since we told you about that security flaw which happens to affect most devices out there and well… but most of you are still probably waiting on some sort of satisfying fix, right? Well the fine folks at Duo and Northeastern University have teamed up and unleashed a special mod of the patch called ReKey. A product of Duo’s security engineers and Northeastern University’s Systems Security Lab, ReKey allows users to immediately protect their Android device without waiting on security updates from their mobile carrier— all with a simple app. There is one major caveat, however: in order for users to apply the patch, devices must be rooted. So if you happen to own an unrooted device at this time, then you’re outta luck until your update is finally pushed to your device (or if some other crafty individuals come up with an alternative).

The patch is free to all Android 2.0+ users and only comes in at a mere 86K in size, so if you’re on a rooted device and itching to feel a little more secure, then head on down to the Play Store and grab ReKey today.

Samsung patent reveals possible plans for Asus PadFone competitor device
Jul 16th 2013, 16:13, by Harrison Kaminsky

Samsung_Pad-Fone

A recent filing out of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office by Samsung has recently been approved for a “wireless communication terminal.” It only takes a couple seconds of looking at it to realize that it resembles the Asus PadFone, however Samsung’s design is a bit more “T-shaped” than their competitor’s. The patent didn’t seem to have any sort of special smartphone to come with the tablet, so it looks like it will be standalone…for now.

Obviously this is the only information we have on it for now, so don’t expect any kind of specs, name, release date, or price for a little while. Check back for updates as it arrives. Look after the break for another image from the patent filing.

Huawei announces MediaPad 7 Youth as latest member of tablet series
Jul 16th 2013, 17:10, by Jeff Causey

Huawei announced today the launch of the Huawei MediaPad 7 Youth as part of their MediaPad line of tablet devices. The device appears to be aimed at younger users, especially those in school. To help make it sturdy enough for that use, Huawei built it using an aluminum metal unibody making it both strong and light. At just 9.9mm in thickness and only weighing 350g, the device should easily slide into the typical student’s bookbag and be able to handle the abuse it will suffer in there.

The MediaPad 7 Youth is equipped with a 7-inch full HD 1080p capable screen driven by a 1.6GHz processor. Power comes from a 4100mAh battery that Huawei says will last almost two weeks in standby mode. Running Android 4.1, Huawei will be released with support for HSPA+ networks and WiFi support.

Huawei did not release pricing information, but they did indicate the device would be available during Q3 of 2013. Unfortunately for North American customers, it looks like the device will only be made available in Russia, China, Asia Pacific markets, Middle East markets, and in Europe.

New images of LG Optimus G2 confirm some details

A couple new images of the upcoming LG Optimus G2 have surfaced, this time from a Korean website claiming to have their hands on a model intended for the LG U+ mobile network in Korea. The model number for the device pictured is LG-F320L. The information confirms a couple details about the device, at least this particular version.

First, the battery is 2540mAh and will be removable. Despite previous rumors about the device coming with 3GB of RAM, this device only has 2GB of RAM. Some of the other specifications for the device include the Snapdragon 800 processor running at 2.3GHz, a 5.2-inch full HD display, LTE-Advanced support and built-in wireless charging.

LG is less than a month away from their event on August 7th in New York City when it is expected they will officially launch the device.

Chromebook shipments set to grow in the second half of 2013

Chromebook Pixel Hinge AA

Chromebooks have been on a roll in the past few weeks, and according to Digitimes, the momentum will continue into the second half of 2013 with shipments expected to double or even triple first half shipments.

Digitimes has reported that this is due to the weak demand for Windows 8, as well as the support by Google and Intel for the platform and the recent entry into the market by AMD. Acer, Lenovo, HP and Samsung are all gearing up to launch new Chromebooks, and ASUS is also contemplating joining the blossoming platform.

HP and Lenovo are both expected to increase Chromebook sales in the second half of 2013, and Acer will triple its orders for Chromebooks, with Samsung preparing to sell four times as much Chromebooks.

While many analysts discounted Chrome OS and labelled it too limited, the platform has defied the shrinking of the PC market to continue to grow exponentially. Just last week, a report stated that Chromebooks comprised about 25% of sub-$300 PC sales, which for a very young operating system, is brilliant.

The success of Chrome OS has caused other OEMs like Lenovo and HP, who were not originally interested in Chromebooks, to join the platform. With other manufacturers like ASUS considering joining the budding platform, it can only get better for Chrome OS fans.

Android World Update # Sony Smartwatch 2 set for September 9 release

Sony Smartwatch 2 set for September 9 release
Jul 16th 2013, 16:37, by Nate Swanner

Sony-SmartWatch-2

In less that two months' time, you could be wearing your brand new Sony Smartwatch. Reports out of the UK suggest that the retailer, Clove, has been prepped by Sony for a September 9 release. This was after Sony originally told Clove the date for release would be July 15, which has come and gone.

If you're not familiar with the watch, it's a really sublime piece of kit on paper. Waterproof to 1 meter, a 1.6-inch screen, and 200 apps currently available. You can also take a call from the device, or take a picture! Some reports suggest you will be able to get 4 days use on one charge, so this really could be a daily driver, not a fascination for tech elitists.

At right around $200, it's not a significant investment for many, but also not an impulse buy. The success or failure of this will depend on apps and interface. Sony says their interface for this watch is more like Android, which will make it familiar for a wider audience. Sony has been pretty wonderful as of late to support the developer community as well, and their smartwatch is no different. The Open Smartwatch initiative is another way Sony is openly embracing open source, and it could yield some great apps.

If they can get this watch out on September 9 with a bevy of good apps, they'll be ahead of the game. Apple has hit a few snags with their iWatch, and Google is not giving any official word on their watch concept. Samsung is toying with the idea of a watch, also, but we're not holding our breath for that, either. The Sony watch looks to be a step up from the Pebble, so we'll be excited to see how it's received once in the hands of users.

IMDB app gets a new update, can now purchase movie tickets in the U.S.
Jul 16th 2013, 16:06, by Brad Ward

lone ranger imdb update july 2013

Alright movie fans, the IMDB app for Android and iOS has just been updated, bringing with it some convenient functionality! With ticketing powered by another popular movie app, Fandango, users can now purchase movie tickets from supported theater’s directly through the IMDB app.

There’s also been some added Amazon integration, which, as The Next Web mentions, isn’t surprising since Amazon owns IMDB. There’s now a “buy” button you can tap, which will direct you to the product on the Amazon Mobile app, giving you the option to purchase the movie, if it’s available. Of course, you need to have the Amazon Mobile app downloaded for this to work, otherwise, it just opens your browser, and gives you a list of search results, using the name of the movie as the search term.

This update brings a “watchlist” to the IMDB app, as well. Basically, you can add movies to your watchlist to track films that you want to see in the future. While it’s a really basic feature, it can definitely come in handy, especially if you’re out on vacation, find a movie you want to see, and don’t want to forget about it by the time you get back home.

Aside from that, there isn’t much else you can expect to see in this update. There’s been a few performance enhancements, which makes scrolling more smooth and responsive, but that’s it. You can grab the IMDB update from the link below, or simply download it straight from your phone.

Do you plan using IMDB to buy tickets to see Pacific Rim or Despicable Me 2 this weekend?

Get it on Google Play

Android World Update # The Play Store may be coming to Google Glass

Android Authority
Android News, Reviews, How To
The Play Store may be coming to Google Glass
Jul 16th 2013, 16:11, by Nate Swanner

Google Glass FAQ

Google Glass is still a bit locked down with development, and has its own portal for obtaining apps. While the Mirror API is available, the experience is still limited to those who are Glass Pioneers or Explorers. They can develop and make their apps available to Glass users worldwide, but not via the Play Store.

The Play Store underwent an overhaul last night, and it may have implications for Glass users. It turns out at least one user has seen Glass show up on the list of possible devices you can load an app onto. I've gone ahead and tried to duplicate this, and wasn't successful. I'm also not in the Glass program, so it would seem as though the Play Store is checking your account for Glass ownership, even though the option is greyed out.

The Play Store on Glass would be a strange experience, as it stands. It would be great to have the option to purchase apps and media via Glass, but navigating the Play Store on Glass would be impossible. Glass navigation is done by a series of cards and alerts, not scrolling over a web page. Users also don't have the ability to select things on a screen, as android or web users do.

This could simply be a hint that once available, Glass apps will reside within the Play Store. It's smart to have as much in one area for commerce as possible, as Google already has a number of "app store" destination points that encompass many of their services, and it can be frustrating.
