New contextual cards and smarter voice search in Nov. 13 update, according to Wired

Google has slowly but consistently been improving its search app for Android over the past year or so, bringing more cards to Google Now and new ways to interact by speaking to your device. It appears the next raft of Google Search updates may be about to drop next week, adding new contextual cards and smarter voice interaction, among other features that weren't quite ready in time for the Nexus 5 launch.

That's what Google reportedly told Wired's Mat Honan, as detailed in his review of the device.

"You might say “text Jennifer” and it will reply “which Jennifer,” and then ask you to dictate the message. It’s also going to get the ability to search inside applications, and launch them to complete tasks for you. So, you might search for a restaurant, and an option in the results shows up for OpenTable, which you’ll be able to fire up and make a reservation. It’s also going to use location cues to drop cards into Google Now, even more so than it does currently. At Yellowstone it will show you geyser times, for example."

The new features are due to land in an app update next Wednesday, Nov. 13, Honan says. Many of these things are natural progressions of features Google Search on Android already offers, but regardless it'll be interesting to see how well they function when the update arrives. In particular the ability to search within apps presents many a bunch of possibilities for future development.

Earlier this week we reported on the discovery that Gameloft was working on a version of Tank Battles that would run on Android powered devices. It turns out that Gameloft was a lot closer to release than we might have guessed as Tank Battles is now available in the Google Play store. Tank Battles has been available on console and computer platforms and this version follows in that tradition, porting it over to mobile devices.

Tank Battles is free, though it does include advertising in game as well as in-app purchases. The game includes more than 80 single-player levels and 10 multiplayer maps that possess some interactive elements, including destroyable blocks and a variety of moving items like obstacles, doors and conveyer belts. To succeed in the tank battles, you have over 90,000 combinations of cannons, armor, treads, camouflage and other items to deck you tank with as well as a variety of armament like mines, turrets, and bombs.

Check out some screen shots below as well as Gameloft’s launch video. If you want to give Tank Battles a try, hit one of the download links below.

LG G Flex to launch next week in Korea, European release to come in December

Curves seem to be all the rage these days, and LG certainly has an option for you in the G Flex. The phone launches in Korea next week on November 12th, and Europe will be getting the device in December. France’s ‘Orange’ cell service provider will be getting the device next month as well.

Along with its curved, flexible six-inch OLED screen, the device comes with 2GB RAM and a 13 MP shooter.

The initial announcement didn’t mention anything about price, but now we have some more information— the Korean price will be 999,900 Won, or about $940.

It’s still tough to tell whether this device or Samsung’s Galaxy Round wins the head-to-head match-up between the two most prominent curved-display smartphones, but we should know soon enough.

Oppo N1 CyanogenMod Limited Edition to begin shipping internationally in December
Nov 8th 2013, 17:10, by Harrison Kaminsky

CyanogenMod Oppo N1

The upcoming Oppo N1 will start shipping internationally this December, and one of its key features is that it will come with support to easily flash the CyanogenMod ROM. News also came in that there would be a limited edition version of the phone that would be pre-installed with CyanogenMod, and will be available at the same time as the regular variant.

A news release sent out today also mentioned that special features such as O-Touch and the O-Click Bluetooth remote will also be included. Elements of Oppo’s ColorOS will also be built in, with the ability to wake the phone by double-tapping its screen, much like LG’s “Knock-On” feature.

The limited edition variant will also come with some CyanogenMod extras, including a special edition case, stickers, and some other things. The best part of all this? The limited edition variant costs exactly the same as the standard version.

Anyone interested in picking one of these bad boys up?

Waterproof Kyocera Hydro XTRM headed to MetroPCS
Nov 8th 2013, 16:44, by Alex Dobie

Hydro XTRMAvailable today for $169

Japanese manufacturer Kyocera continues to carve out a niche for itself in the world of waterproof entry-level smartphones. We've already seen devices like the Hydro Elite on Verizon and Hydro Edge on Boost; today sees MetroPCS announcing the Kyocera Hydro XTRM. Like its siblings it doesn't boast top-end hardware, but it is IP57 certified to protect against dust and water submersion for up to 30 minutes. It's also shock-resistant, rated MIL-STD-810G, and includes Kyocera's "Smart Sonic Receiver" tissue conductivity tech for improved hearing in noisy environments.

On the inside it's powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon chip and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, with a 5-megapixel camera, 1.3-megapixel front-facer and 2,000mAh battery. The display is a 4-inch WVGA (800x480) panel. So nothing fancy, but you wouldn't expect it for the price.

The Kyocera Hydro XTRM is available on MetroPCS from today, priced at $169 plus tax.
