LG Optimus G quad-core pictured in the flesh, TrueHD IPS+ display confirmed

Posted: 26 Aug 2012 10:38 AM PDT

The latest and greatest in smartphones is almost here. Earlier this week we reported on a new device codenamed the LG Optimus G with a quad-core processor, and later Qualcomm confirmed the details. LG’s new powerhouse will feature the brand new Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, and that is only the beginning. Today we got our first official look at the phone, as well as more details from LG.

Thanks to the folks at AndroidMX we are seeing the new Optimus G pictured for the first time. Their images confirm the awesome display, as well as the internals with a few screenshots confirming the specs. Those are a 4.7-inch 1280 x 800 resolution display with LG’s brand new TrueHD IPS+ technology. This is said to be 60% brighter than Samsung’s AMOLED, while being more efficient too.

That isn’t all either. They managed some screenshots of the new LG Optimus G running on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, and can also confirm the 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and the Adreno 320 for stunning graphics and gaming. Oh and did we mention they confirmed the 13 megapixel camera — yea that happened.

Earlier today we also received some more confirmation from LG Korea. They confirmed the retina beating, Samsung topping display they’ll be using, as well as a new battery technology they claim will make the phone up to 60% more efficient. Whether we’ll be getting 60% more battery life is another story though. Either way the details confirmed by LG as well as the leaks from yesterday all makes for a strong showing from LG.

The impressive new next-gen LG Optimus G is headed to the streets internationally in September, with a mid October launch date stateside. Stay tuned for more details as we’ll be seeing it live next week at IFA 2012.

Nexus 7 quad-core overclocked to 2.0 GHz, shatters benchmarks

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 12:42 PM PDT

The Google Nexus 7 and NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 quad-core processor just keep pushing the cutting edge. When we say cutting edge — we mean faster than anything else available. Over at XDA they’ve pushed the limits farther than we thought possible, and now have the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core that powers the Nexus 7 running at 2.0 GHz. Check it out below.

Yup, that is an actual screenshot. I just made it pretty. We’ve talked about these types of things in the past. Earlier this month we saw the Nexus 7 overclocked to 1.7 GHz and pass 7000 in Quadrant benchmarks, but this here is an entirely new level topping 8000. This time around however we aren’t running on the popular Trinity (derkenel) many know and love. Instead this awesome news comes to us thanks to my good pal Simms22, and clemsyn at XDA Developers.

Clemsyn’s very special and experimental test kernel (as in not for the public) has managed to push the limits to 2.0 Ghz on this quad-core chip. Many are able to enjoy his latest and greatest at 1.8 GHz, but 2.0 is causing a few issues so for now this is only an internal build. Hopefully once these awesome developers continue to push the limits we can see an actual release. For now however, this will have to do.

Pretty impressive scores right? That is beating Qualcomm’s unreleased quad-core linked to below. According to Simms the Nexus 7 and Tegra 3 at 2.0 GHz isn’t exactly what we’d call “stable” but he was able to get a few other tests in — including the new and popular RL Benchmark. Since this is such an experimental kernel we won’t be including details or instructions like before, but since we know there’s a few diehard enthusiasts out there we’ll give you a link. If you’d like to follow along with clemsyn and his “Elite Kernel” for some high speed fun you can do so by heading to this XDA thread.

Fruit vs. Robot game pits Apple against Android [If only companies could settle out of court this way]

Posted: 26 Aug 2012 02:27 AM PDT

Apple has just had a big win in the landmark Apple vs. Samsung patent infringement case, which leaves consumers wondering whether a single company can claim ownership of rounded rectangles after all. If you want to get involved in the epic legal war, you can now have a say even if your name is not Lucy Koh or Florian Mueller. A new mobile game pits the iOS and Android platforms against each other in a fun (and less expensive) way.

Apple fanboys/girls and Fandroids now have a better outlet against each other, says Aussie developer Mirsad Makalic, who cites Apple vs. Android arguments in his workplace as an inspiration for building the game. “We had many arguments and discussions about the whole Apple vs. Android thing.”

Fruit vs. Robot is available on both iOS and Android platforms as a free download from the App Store and Google Play, respectively. The game is a collection of trivia, board and arcade games.

Sure, you won’t get a billion dollars with when you win, but at least you won’t be accused of monopolistic patent-trolling or slavish copying.

Check out the demo video below.

Another win for Apple as ITC remands Motorola complaint for further judicial investigation

Posted: 26 Aug 2012 01:49 AM PDT

Apple just made a clean sweep in the U.S. courts, with a “guilty” verdict for Samsung. The courts have granted Apple just over $1 billion in damages from patent infringement, and may further decide on a ban on offending Samsung products deemed to have infringed on Apple’s iPhone patents.

Apple is also winning in other fronts — or at least it is at an advantage in other trade-related concerns. While Motorola is seeking an injunction on the importation of the iPhone and iPad to the U.S., the decision on whether to impose a ban might take a while.

Recall that Motorola has filed a petition with the International Trade Commission to ban imports of the iPhone and iPad into U.S. soil due to patent infringement. It turns out that the ITC has cleared Apple with respect to three of the four patents-in-suit.

However, the ITC says that upon an initial determination, Apple may have infringed on a non-standard essential patent, which could potentially lead to an import ban. In particular, the said patent is for  the “sensor controlled user interface for portable communication device.”

The ITC, however, has decided to remand further action and investigation on the matter to Administrative Law Judge Thomas B. Pender, reports FOSS Patents.

Apple was cleared with respect to three of Motorola’s patents-in-suit, including the aforementioned standard-essential one. But with respect to U.S. Patent No. 6,246,862 on a “sensor controlled user interface for portable communication device”, a non-standard-essential patent, the investigation was remanded to Administrative Law Judge Thomas B. Pender. The judge had found claim 1 of that patent indefinite and, as a result, not violated. The ITC has reversed his indefiniteness finding. As a result, there could (but need not) be a finding of a violation with respect to this patent, and an import ban.

While this might initially seem a win for Motorola and Google, the problem here is timing. An initial determination by the judge will still be subject to a review by the ITC. The entire process could take at least one year. With that, whatever damages ensuing from the alleged patent infringement would have already been moot, especially since iPhones and iPads will continue to be sold in the U.S.

Apart from this particular patent-related complaint, Motorola has lodged another lawsuit with the ITC, alleging that Apple has infringed on seven technology patents. Motorola is again asking the commission to impose a ban on the importation of Apple products.

It’s an all-out war in the patent realm, and Apple has scored the biggest win, so far. Everything else seems to be peripheral, in comparison to $1 billion. Is the current patent system helpful i ensuring the viability of  inventions? Or is patent litigation only hurting innovation?

Rogers pushes out Android 4.0 ICS upgrade for Motorola Razr

Posted: 26 Aug 2012 12:59 AM PDT

We told you a couple of days back about the new ICS rollout timeline that Rogers has set for several devices, Motorola Razr included. Though we're not quite at the very end of August yet, several owners of the Razr are reporting that they have received that oft delayed Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update on their phone.

As mentioned by Mobile Syrup, the new Android 4.0.4 firmware is available via OTA update, which means you should see a notification on your phone to download and install the file. If not, you can check manually on your Motorola Razr by going to "System software updates" on settings.

Mobile Syrup

We know how terribly exciting and tormenting at the same time waiting for the notification to pop up on your phone can be. Even if you don't see it today, it's nothing to worry about. It will take a while for Rogers to roll out the update to everyone.

If you want to help other readers that are in the same position, feel free to share the update status of your phone, as well as your location, in the comments below.

Android to grab 70% worldwide market share by end 2012, despite iPhone 5 release – DigiTimes

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 10:12 PM PDT

Aside from supplying news outlets around the world with juicy rumors on all things tech, DigiTimes also has its own team of analysts that provide forecasts on which mobile platform will dominate and which will falter. What does DigiTimes Research senior analyst Luke Lin have to say about the impact of Apple iPhone 5, which will go for sale in September, to the smartphone market in the second half of 2012?

According to Lin, the competition will still be dominated by Android-based devices for the rest of the year. While Android has already secured 60% of the global smartphone market in the first half of 2012, the analytics firm said the lead will extend to 70%, thanks to the strong presence of second-tier phone makers in China, as well as the push by major manufacturers to release their devices in Q3.

Meanwhile, Apple's iPhones shipments are expected to reach 125 million units by year's end, up almost 50% from the 93 million units of iPhones that were shipped last year. Impressive as the final tally sounds, the year-on-year growth rate is lower than the numbers recorded in the last two years.

Windows Phones should fare better this year, as shipments for Microsoft and Nokia's mobile venture are expected to reach 21 million units in 2012 — more than double of that in 2011. The numbers for Blackberry and Symbian devices, as expected, aren't encouraging.  Device shipments for both platforms this year are expected to tumble 40% and 60%, respectively.

Android Authority On Air – Episode 26 – Samsung vs Apple Verdict and Vizio CoStar Review

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 06:03 PM PDT

During this weeks show, we were joined by special guest Chris Hollis of Google TV Friends to help us with our Vizio Co-Star and Google TV review. As you may know, this week the $99 Google TV set top box started to arrive for those that pre-ordered. We go over initial impresses ions, setup and configuration, software/UI, and popular, must have Google TV apps.

It’s that time of year again. Right before the fall season when we start to see rumors pop up all over the place regarding the next Nexus phone from Google. This time around, the rumor mill is running full force with leaks pointing towards at least three Nexus phones. The Sony Xperia Nexus, the LG Optimus Nexus and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus II are rumored thus far. Interest sparked? Yes.

Just a few hours before the show the verdict dropped for the Apple vs Samsung trial. As this is an extremely important trial for the largest Android smartphone manufacturer, we figured we better talk about it. I think most of us agree, Samsung was wronged, the jury was blind, and we can’t wait for the appeal.

Besides the big stories this week, T-Mobile has axed their version of the Galaxy Note after two weeks. The HTC Thunderbolt got a leaked ICS ROM and the HTC Incredible 2 got one as also. The Samsung Galaxy S3 leaked all over the place this past week, for both the international version and the T-Mobile version. And Facebook goes dogfooding with Android.

The Give Away

We’re giving away a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (International) here in the near future. If you’re interested and want another chance to win, during the show we give away a super secret entry code. Once you get the code, just head on over to the contest page and enter your code into the Rafflecopter.

Square Enix to release Final Fantasy Dimensions on August 30 for $29 (yes, twenty nine dollars)

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 09:51 AM PDT

Buoyed by the success of the last two Final Fantasy games on Android, Square Enix is boldly going where no game developers have done before on the Android platform. The Final Fantasy Dimensions is going to cost more than the original Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy III combined.

Here's what Square Enix wrote on their official blog:

"FINAL FANTASY DIMENSIONS is delivered as episodic content. The prologue will be free for everyone to enjoy. You can purchase the first chapter for $2.99 / £1.99 / €2.39, chapters 2-4 for $9.99 / £6.99 / €7.99 each, or the entire collection of chapters for $28.99 / £19.99 / €22.99."

OK, so it's nice that they're making the prologue a free download, but a total of $29 for the whole 4 chapters? “Why, I can get 29 copies of Angry Birds Space premium for that amount of money,” says one shocked gamer, hypothetically. But that’s not really a good comparison to make.  And why would anyone purchase 29 copies of that game — or any game for that matter?

To be fair, this is Final Fantasy we're talking about. The game is bound to be more immersive and thought-provoking than your typical Android game. We're looking at 40 hours of gameplay, at least, for the whole chapters. We'll leave gamers to make the decision whether the price tag is worth the investment. If it is well received, we can only hope that it'll persuade Square Enix to port FF7.

The Final Fantasy Dimensions will be released on August 30 for both Android and iOS. Do you think Square Enix is taking its premium stance a bit too far?

LG Optimus G gets handled in the wild, pictures revealed

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 09:29 AM PDT

lg optimus g

As we move further into the second half of the year, manufacturers are racing to release the next big Android device. For one, LG has confirmed the existence of the Optimus G and its high-end specs and even teased it a bit on video. While the phone will only be officially unveiled at the IFA 2012 event in Berlin at the end of the month, pictures of the Optimus G have popped up online.

The LG Optimus G that Androidmx.net has gotten their hands on seem to resemble the exterior — front part, at least — of another quad-core offering from the company, the Optimus 4X HD. The boxy look  has somewhat been refined and there are more curves in the Optimus G. We're just not sure if this is what the final product would look like, as it just seems less polished.

Specs-wise, the LG Optimus G will be one of the first smartphones to ship with a quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro processor and Adreno 320 GPU. Alongside the zippy SoC, it'll have a 4.7-inch HD IPS display, 2GB RAM, and 13MP rear camera. What's less impressive is the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich that the phone is running. We imagine Android enthusiasts will go wild – as raucous as us geeks can get – if LG somehow manages to put Jelly Bean on the final version.

There you have it – pics and confirmed specs of the LG Optimus G. We foresee a video trailer will be out soon as we near the unveiling date.

Jelly Bean for US version of Transformer Pad 300 now available for download from ASUS

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 08:35 AM PDT

asus_transformer_pad_tf300tl_tablet

ASUS has released the much anticipated Android 4.1.1 update for the American Transformer Pad 300 last week. In addition, international users (well, at least those in the UK) could update their Pad 300 to the latest and greatest version of Android starting yesterday.

American readers, now you have another way to update your TF300 to Jelly Bean; ASUS  has made available as a standalone download the Jelly Bean build that was pushed last Saturday over the air. The file weighs in at a healthy 438MB and you can get it from ASUS' servers here. The news should come down as particularly good for the users that have unlocked their devices or modified their firmware in other way, which prevented them to install the OTA Jelly Bean update.

Unless you have bought your ASUS Transformer Pad 300 from the US, refrain from trying to install the file on your device, as ASUS specifies that this is for the American model only. Also note that installing the new firmware will overwrite your rooting and/or custom ROMs.

As for our international readers, worry not. For you, ASUS should make the update available on its servers in a week or so.

Video: LG has a ’2nd gen’ quad-core monster in store

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 07:40 AM PDT

Some time ago, we brought you news of LG’s intent to create a new flagship phone. in the last few days we confirmed that news. We’re now here to report they have a video teaser site up that will entice your wicked curiosity. The name has been switched from the ‘D1L’ and will be a ’2nd gen’ quad core device, unlike the 4X HD which hit Europe in June.

This will apparently be a beast of a phone containing a 720p 4.7-inch IPS display, a 13-megapixel camera, and 2GB of RAM. As far as the actual processor goes, LG says it’s a Qualcomm APQ8064. I’ll let the videos do the rest of the talking. Do be aware they are in Korean, so unless you know Hangul, you may just have to stare in wonder. Details may be few but if we hear anything at IFA 2012 or beyond, you’ll be the first to know!

Apple vs Samsung verdict: Android devices to ban after Apple $1 billion win in U.S. court

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 07:28 AM PDT

Earlier today we told you that Apple has obtained a huge victory in its U.S. case against Samsung, with the latter being delivered a devastating defeat – not because of the $1 billion in damages awarded to Apple, which can be considered pocket change by Samsung compared to its profits from the mobile business, but because what the victory means for Apple, the whole mobile ecosystem, and, most importantly, consumers.

Sure, Samsung may fight the verdict in further appeals, but Apple will also do some appealing of its own, and try to obtain various injunctions in the U.S. against the Samsung products found to be infringing at least one of Apple's patents. After all, Apple said all along that it's seeking sales ban verdicts against Samsung rather than compensatory damages.

We already have a September 20 date set by Judge Lucy Koh, the same judge that has been presiding over the trial, for injunction hearings. While we wait, let's take a look at Samsung's devices found infringing on at least one Apple patent in this first U.S. trial between the two companies, that are now in danger to be barred from selling in the region.

For the purpose of this inquiry, we looked at the official verdict from the trial, and checked what U.S. carriers are still selling any of the devices found to be infringing – see the tables below for each device. While not all products infringe on all Apple patents in this trial, it's enough for Apple to prove one infringement to request a sales ban – and Apple completed that first part, the proving, and now can get back to the injunction pursuit.

It's also worth noting that while some carriers do not list older Samsung devices, these handsets can be still found at third-party retailers for more than affordable prices. But we mainly look at carriers, as they'll also share the pain when and if product sales ban will be awarded to Apple.

Verizon

Verizon still lists the Droid Charge and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE (see the tablets section below), while the Continuum and Fascinate have been discontinued. According to our chart based on the official court verdict, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE does not infringe any patent – but is that really so? We'll explain in our tablet section.

AT&T

Of the four Samsung handsets sold by AT&T in the past, only the Galaxy S II Skyrocket is found on the carrier's website, although, admittedly, the carrier is still selling a Continuum Glide, a device that could also be found to be infringing in later rulings.

Sprint

Sprint has five phones that could be affected by a sales ban in the country. Sure, in the table above we say that two of them are not selling anymore, but that's not really so. Instead of the Transform, Sprint sells a Transform Ultra, while the Epic 4G Touch is not found on the carrier's website, but the Galaxy S2 is there – in case you forgot the Epic 4G Touch is Sprint's Galaxy S2 name. Also worth mentioning is that Sprint still lists the two-year old Galaxy S aka Epic 4G on its site.

T-Mobile

But for the Galaxy S (Vibrant), T-Mobile has three handsets still on sale, the Exhibit 4G, the Galaxy S 4G and the Galaxy S2.

Other carriers and unlocked GSM devices

Now that we're done with the Big Four, we can look at what regional carriers have in store, and various low-end to mid-ranged devices can still be purchased from their sites, including the Galaxy Prevail, the Galaxy S Showcase, the Gem and the Intercept (we'll have special notes on the Galaxy S Showcase and the Intercept in a section below).

As for unlocked smartphones – the international GSM versions of the Galaxy S, the Galaxy S2 and the Galaxy Ace – they can certainly be found with other electronics retailers, in case you're interested in any of them.

Tablets

Last, but not least, we have looked at the Galaxy Tab tablets mentioned in the verdict form, the Galaxy Tab, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wi-Fi and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE, and it looks like they're all infringing on patents, therefore they are targets for injunctions.

Apple has already obtained an injunction on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the country and it's likely to hang on to it in view of yesterday's verdict.

But what about that Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE apparently not infringing on Apple patents despite being similar to its Wi-Fi brother (except for its 4G cellular connectivity)? Well, it looks like the verdict form does not list the Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE in the sections dealing with software infringement, but only lists it in the iPad design section – the only section of the form favorable to Samsung.

That's an oversight from Apple's lawyers or the judge's staff, but since the Wi-Fi version of the tablet has been found to infringe on software patents '381, '915 and '163, the same thing can be said about the LTE version.

Special Notes

We have already covered the strangeness of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE omission from certain sections of the verdict but we have other weird things in the verdict form.

The Galaxy S Showcase is listed as the Galaxy S II Showcase at least twice, not that anyone made any comments on the matter yet.

The Samsung Indulge is curiously not infringing on any Apple patents, at least according to the jury, even though the handset is listed in various questions in the form.

We'll be back with more news on any sales bans that Apple may score in the near future, as Judge Lucy Koh has already set a September 20 hearing on the matter.
