How to use Chromecast on incognito tabs

Chromecast Incognito

From time to time you might find yourself wanting to use Chromecast on a tab that you might not otherwise want to show up in your browser history. (Yes, as a warning to parents and a reminder to perverts, Chromecast can beam anything from a browser to the big screen. Anything.)

But in Incognito Mode, extensions are turned off by default. Flipping the switch is easy, and you can do it for individual extensions.

Just go to chrome://extensions (type it or click that link) and you'll be taken to the Extensions page. From there, scroll down until you find "Google Cast," and then click the "Allow in incognito" checkbox. Now it'll work in Incognito mode, and you'll be able to Cast all those ... things .. that you might not want prying eyes to see.

Android 4.2.2 with Sense 5 deploying to HTC One X+

HTC has started sending out the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update for the HTC One X+, according to a couple of new reports. As one of the most powerful smartphones of last year, the One X+ is nearly current with the 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update and Sense 5 UI.

Allegedly, only unlocked One X+ models in Asia are seeing the 484MB update and the European and North American versions are soon to follow. Depending on how quickly AT&T gives the okay, we could be another few weeks or more from getting the update.

As to be expected, the update includes features like BlinkFeed, automatic video highlights, and an updated music app. Not to diminish the Android 4.2.2 side of things, users also see Daydreams and lock screen widgets.

Best Android apps to help you plan the perfect party or get together [August 2013]

Android_Party_Apps

Preparing for parties used to be such a hassle. The stressful process of building a guest list, sending out invitations, finding the perfect foods, struggling while looking through your liquor cabinet, and of course planning what games you were going to play became tiring and took the joy out of setting it all up. With a little technology, you can enjoy the whole process again. Leave it to Android apps to help you plan the best party possible! Hit the break for what we feel are the best apps for planning your next big party.

Evite

1. Invitations- Evite: Why spend money on envelopes, postage and stationary? Why worry about getting the perfect design right for your next party's invitation? We live in a digital world, and it's about time you adjust. The Evite for Android application allows users to send out invitations to party-goers on the fly, as well as manage guest lists and see RSVPs. Push notifications can also be enabled for event updates and for when a guest RSVPs or adds comments. Evite's UI is extremely simple and displays a really nice overview of each event, including information such as whether people replied or not, how many guests they are bringing (broken down into adults and kids), an option to update your RSVP and notifications, and event details such as start and end time. There's also an option to look at photos of the event and other attending guests. This app is perfect for getting a group together for just about anything!

Recipe_Search

2. Food Recipes- Recipe Search: If you're having a party, you'll probably want to serve some food, unless of course you want people leaving within the first hour. Why break out the old cookbooks and search through countless pages of nonsense when you can just browse for any recipe you want, all on your mobile device? My favorite recipe app on Android is Recipe Search, which includes every feature that you could want in a recipe app. If you're not sure on how to go about a specific cooking technique, just ask a question through the app and get real time responses from real cooks that are also using the app! There's also a social aspect of the app, as you can share photos of completed dishes to other users— maybe you'll want to send them to your guests! They will be super-excited for the party. Bookmarking is simple so you'll be able to plan ahead for your party without having to remember exactly what recipe you wanted to use for your get-together.

Mixologist

3. Drink Recipes- Mixologist Drink Recipes: What's a party without drinks? You certainly don't need your phone to have a little fun, but it's definitely nice to have a drink recipes app to show off your bartending skills to all of your friends. The 'Mixologist' app includes over 7,900 drink recipes with over 1,300 ingredients. Possibly the best feature in the application is the "Liquor Cabinet" tab, which lets users add a list of all of the liquor and mixers you have on hand. Mixologist will spit out a database of cocktails that you can make with your current list of ingredients. The app also includes a slot-machine styled "random drinks" feature, drink recipe categories, bartending terminology and techniques, metric/imperial units, and the ability to add custom drinks to the library. And of course if for some reason you don't know where your local liquor store is, there is a built-in locator that uses the Google Maps interface. Definitely get this app before your party and your friends will start calling you "Master Bartender."

Our_Groceries_Shopping_List

4. Shopping List App- Our Groceries Shopping List: Just last week we did a guide on the top shopping list applications for Android, which included my personal favorite, 'Our Groceries Shopping List.' This application allows users to access their content not only on their phones, but on a web interface as well, including cross-device/cross-platform syncing of data. The real-time updating feature is really nice, as other users can see list-items being crossed off as the shopper adds items to his/her shopping cart. If you're planning a party with friends, this is a perfect way to keep up to date with everyone so that unnecessary items aren’t purchased. The ability to categorize items is also a great tool so that you won't find yourself wandering around the store for hours looking for items. You can also add recipe lists, breaking down full meals into simple ingredients, making it easier for you to get an overview of everything and know that you aren’t forgetting anything. The app truly works and its simplistic interface offers some really nice features behind it.

101 Drinking Games

5. Party Games- 101 Drinking Games: Conversation is slowing down, so now it's time to have a little fun. Break out the '101 Drinking Games' app, which features over 250 drinking games (4 of them are playable in the app itself, so you there is no need to bring cards or dice with you.) I'm not going to lie here— this app is certainly a little outdated looking, but it still has great functionality and features some really fun games for you to play with your friends at your party. If you need some more drink recipes (if Mixologist didn't do it for you), then this app has a few included as well. Definitely go grab this free app if you want to add to the fun of your party!

There are tons of great apps out there for any type of party you’re planning, no matter the ages of the guests and venue of the party. Feel free to check out some of the ones listed above and see how they work out for you, or hit us up below with any apps that you think are great for planning parties!

How to use Google's Android Device Manager to find your lost device
Aug 8th 2013, 16:37, by Dustin Earley

Losing your Android device, either to theft or your own forgetfulness, is certainly no fun. But it’s a lot better than it used to be. Google has finally released their answer to Lost Android, Lookout, and Apple’s Find My iPhone: Android Device Manager. ADM should be hitting your device soon, if it hasn’t already, to help you locate or factory wipe your misplaced Android device. Here’s how to use it.

Set up

Android Device Manager will automatically hit your device without you having to do a thing. If you don’t have it yet, you will soon. But before you can take full advantage of ADM, you’re going to need to do a few things, like enable factory reset on your device. Setting it up is pretty simple. First, visit google.com/android/devicemanager.

Screen Shot 2013-08-07 at 9.32.01 PM

From there, a map will pop up with some information about your device, along with a prompt to enable the Erase Device function of ADM. You can either manually open up the green Google Settings app, which should be in your app drawer, or use the send notification link on the ADM webpage, giving you an easy way to find exactly where you need to be to enable remote factory reset. If you don’t use the notification, just open Google Settings, and select Android Device Manager. The option to toggle both the ability to factory reset your phone from ADM, and locate it, will be in there.

Using ADM

After you’ve done that, you’re all set to go. At the moment, there are three main functions of Android Device Manager. You can ring a lost phone, factory reset a lost phone or locate your device on a map using your phones GPS. You can also rename what your device appears as in ADM.

Simply loading ADM online will show you the location of your device, but if you’re tracking it while it’s on the move, there’s a refresh button that will recalculate your device’s location.

Screen Shot 2013-08-07 at 9.32.51 PM

If your device is located somewhere simple, like in your own house, you may want to use the Ring function. As Google explains, even if your phone is on silent, using the ring function in ADM will force your phone to ring at full volume for five minutes. To turn it off, you have to press the power button on your phone. There’s nothing on your device indicating why it’s ringing, you’d have to know how to stop the ringing or play around to figure it out.

Screen Shot 2013-08-07 at 9.33.25 PM

If you believe your device has been stolen, and your have precious information on it, then the Erase Device function will come in handy. After you click Erase Device, a pop up will tell you what it will erase (essentially everything), and what will happen after that. Unfortunately, Google says it “may not be able to wipe the content of the SD card in your device.” Best of luck if you have anything private on there.

If your device is off when you try to factory reset it, have no fear. The moment it’s turned on, it will be erased.

You may think erasing the content of your device is the best thing to do as soon as you find it’s missing, but you may want to hold on. After you erase your device, ADM will not work anymore.

Wrap up

Right now, that’s all there is to it. As with all of Google’s products, we expect to see more features added in time. If you have any questions, please be sure to let us know in the comments, and we’ll help however we can.

Chromecast

It's a burning question that's heating up our Chromecast forums: Do you leave your Chromecast pluged in all day?

(We'll pause as the groans subside for that pun.)

But, really, do you leave your Chromecast plugged in all day? Here's how I do things.
