Making apps beautiful: The icons

App icons

Beautiful apps start with a beautiful icon, and Google's Android design team offers some great advice for all developers.

Google's Android developers are constantly working with the growing community of application developers and designers to help makes apps that not only do great things, but look lovely while doing it. Building responsive and unique apps is only half the battle, because you and I aren't going to install them -- let alone recommend them to others -- if they don't look good.

In today's segment, they focus on the app icon itself. It's the first thing we see when we install an app, and it's important that it make a good impression. The blog posting lists all the important things to consider when designing your application icon, including the various sizes and formats that will make it look great on every Android device.

Android has taken the world by storm, and a big part of the reason is the rich app catalog. You want to make apps that stand out, and using tips like this will help. It's a must-read for any developer, and worth reading for the curious layman as well. Follow the source link and have a look.

Android World Update # Verizon ‘will not touch’ their pricing structure for Edge customers

Verizon 'will not touch' their pricing structure for Edge customers
Jul 19th 2013, 17:38, by Nate Swanner

verizon-store

On the heels of their Edge plan option, Verizon has been roundly criticized for not reducing the cost of their monthly service plans. Pundits see this as paying a monthly cost for the device, as well as a built-in subsidy rolled into the plan itself. Verizon's CFO seems unfazed by such criticism, noting the nation's largest carrier would not be altering their structure in any way.

Fran Shammo, the aforementioned CFO of Verizon, said very plainly "We will not touch our service pricing" when prompted to comment on whether or not Verizon would alter their pricing scheme to suit the Edge offering. Shammo plainly and flatly told us what we knew all along: Verizon isn't interested in saving us money.

Shammo went on to say Verizon doesn't expect many will take advantage of Edge, which may have foreshadowed their decision to so rigidly stick to their current pricing. For a company that was so fond of T-Mobile's offering months ago, they've taken a very wait-and-see approach to this new frontier.

As we mentioned previously, Verizon is just the latest in the line of carriers making a very passing attempt at transparency in pricing. It's fair, but not ideal, and Verizon seems to be okay with that.

Are you?

What a week. We've had exclusive leaks of Google and ASUS' new Nexus tablet. The still unreleased Android 4.3 leaked out on the Nexus 4. We got hands-on with the new HTC One Mini. So there's a lot to talk about and a lot to look forward, and we're going to tear through it all tonight on the Android Central podcast. Plus we'll even have a few more of your emails.

New Messaging App to Focus On Security
Jul 19th 2013, 17:24, by Anthony Muzonzini

One of the co-founders of Pirate Bay, Peter Sunde, is set to launch a new mobile messaging application whose main selling point will be that the app will be closed to the prying eyes of the United States National Security Agency (NSA). Sunde hopes to take advantage of the recent controversy over the surveillance tactics being used by the NSA in order to drive interest in this new mobile application.

Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 hinted as next update for the handset by Telstra
Jul 19th 2013, 17:06, by Chris Smith

Galaxy Note 2

Australian mobile operator Telstra has confirmed that the Galaxy Note 2 will not get the Android 4.2.2 update, and that instead it will move directly to a "newer version."

A few days ago, a report revealed that certain Samsung devices, including the Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S3, may skip Android 4.2.2 entirely in favor of Android 4.3, which is most likely the "newer version" Telstra is referring to.

Here's what Telstra posted on its update support pages:

Samsung have elected globally to skip the 4.2.2 update for this device and will instead go to a newer version of Android. No schedule has been provided for this update.

While Samsung has not mentioned anything about such updates, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Android device maker decide to go directly to Android 4.3 on certain devices.

Considering the increasing amount of Android 4.3 leaks – versions of the OS are available for the Galaxy S4 and Nexus 4 – it sure makes sense to expect Google to unveil Android 4.3 next week during its special media event.

In fact, earlier today we've seen yet another purported Nexus 7 specs screenshot that had Android 4.3 listed as the OS for the upcoming Android tablet.
