Motorola DROID MAXX image leaks with suspect red racing stripe
Jul 19th 2013, 16:22, by Robert Nelson

Verizon is expected to announce the new DROID lineup during an event scheduled for July 23rd. The invite teased how they would be showcasing "one of their most popular family of devices." Of course, for that we look towards the DROID lineup. While Verizon has left things with that little bit of a teaser, the rumor mill is suggesting we are going to see a few new devices.

Specifically, it is looking like Verizon will reveal upwards of 3 new handsets. A few leaks are suggesting these new models will include the DROID MINI, DROID ULTRA and DROID MAXX. And well, it appears as if we are now getting a look at the back of one of those three device.

The image is coming by way of the @srcleaks Twitter account and showing what is said to be the DROID MAXX. There weren’t any details along with the image and as you have seen — it shows the handset with a black back that is sporting a red racing stripe.

Sticking on the topic of the stripe, it does seem suspect and we question whether this was added to the image or if it will actually be part of the handset. The one point we cannot overlook is that the stripe goes all the way to the bottom edge of the phone but stops at the cutout for the camera and doesn’t wrap all the way to the top.

Aside from the colors and stripe, the image is also showing the camera, flash and speaker along with the expected logos from Motorola, DROID and Verizon. Basically, the details one would expect to see. The interesting part about all of this is the fact that we have seen very few leaks and rumors. Or in other words, we have yet to really see anything in terms of the specs.

The one other leak that surfaced dealing with this announcement included a possible release date. It was said that Verizon will announce these devices on July 23rd and then have them available a few weeks later on August 8th. With that in mind, we will be there live when Verizon offers the official details.

Nexus 7 2 leak tips wireless charging and Slim Port for 1080p video out
Jul 19th 2013, 15:38, by Robert Nelson

Google has already announced an event for next week. The event is scheduled for July 24th and it is believed that we will see Android 4.3 introduced alongside the next-generation Nexus 7, a device that up until now seems to have been dubbed the Nexus 7 2. Whether that name will stick remains to be seen, however it does appear as if the specs and pricing are being pieced together little by little.

Granted, this is all coming by way of leaks and unofficial sources, however what we are seeing all seems to be on the up and up. Anyway, it looks like another leak has arrived this morning and this one has brought talk of specs. In this case an image provided to the folks at Engadget is showing the Nexus 7 2 as running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean along with a quad-core 1.5GHz processor.

Other details mentioned include a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera and 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera. And of course, as the 7 in the name would imply — the Nexus 7 will arrive sporting a 7-inch display. Though, this leak didn’t mention anything about the resolution. Otherwise, this leak also pointed towards a 32GB storage option, wireless charging and a “slim port” that will bring support for 1080p HD video output.

Looking towards some of the other leaks and there has been talk of the tablet having 4GB of RAM. There was also a video leak that offered what is believed to be a look at the tablet. Some stills from that video can be see in in an earlier post. While we are seeing plenty of talk of increased specs (as compared to the current generation Nexus 7), it is also looking like there will be an increase in the price.

The still rumored pricing suggests the 16GB model will be $229 and the 32GB model will be $269. Finally, those looking for the comparison should remember the current generation Nexus 7 is $199 and $249 for the 16GB and 32GB models respectively. Bottom line it is looking like the Nexus 7 2 will be unveiled next week with both an increase in price and bump in the specs.

Verizon Edge upgrade plan arrival will not change current service prices
Jul 19th 2013, 15:06, by Robert Nelson

Following up the recent rumors, Verizon Wireless confirmed the VZ Edge upgrade program yesterday. That news had many comparing the Edge program to the other recent announcements from AT&T and T-Mobile. Those carriers announced similar programs called Next and Jump. The problem with the Edge program though, many have said it will simply be a way for those looking to upgrade frequently to spend more money.

With that in mind, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo recently spoke a bit about the Edge upgrade program during the company’s earnings call. To begin with, Shammo has said they do not expect a large amount of subscribers to pick up on this plan. He went on to speak about how he believes most customers will still buy their phone on-contract and at a discount — ultimately waiting two years between upgrades.

Those who missed the Verizon Edge news may not realize, but when you buy a handset using this plan you are financing the device over a two-year period and grabbing a service plan without contract. The catch is the price of the device. Because you don’t have the agreement you will not get the subsidy. Simply put, that means instead of paying roughly $200 for a smartphone you could be paying upwards of $600.

Basically, this equates to having to pay the regular monthly service rates in addition to the price of the phone each month. The key here, Shammo has made it clear that those going the Edge route will not be seeing any discounts on the service pricing. To be specific, Shammo said they “will not touch our service pricing.”

In addition to the Edge program getting some criticism from users, Verizon is also receiving some attention from the analysts. Craig Moffett, an analyst at Moffett Research has said “you’d have to be out of your mind,” to accept this new offer.” He also went on to mention he believes the Edge program is “unlikely to have any impact in the market whatsoever.”
