Motorola: ‘The new Motorola starts today’

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 11:56 AM PDT

Motorola wants you to know that despite all the great stuff from the past few years (decades, really), they are just getting going.  Perhaps a result of the Google pairing, or possibly as a result of knowing how many patents they are sitting on, Motorola today promised that today is the start of a new Motorola.

So what’s new?  For starters, they have announced that there will be “Developer Editions” of their handsets, most likely something with unlocked bootloaders or just something ready to flash.

The new Motorola is committed to three things right now: Speed, Power Management, and Android.  This trio of core values is what will drive innovation and new devices over the foreseeable future as they look to gain ground on Samsung, LG,  and other players.

A bit of goodwill

Motorola advises that most of their 2011 devices will see Android 4.1 very soon, but did not say which would and would not.  However, either you get Jelly Bean for your phone or they’ll pay you for it, literally.

Did you get burned by a Motorola device that you expect to see get Android 4.1 only to learn that it will not? Motorola has some great news for you! You will get a $100 credit towards one of the new models announced today.  Sure, it’s a way of getting you back into a store and recommitting to a carrier, but nobody else will pony up a Benjamin for your troubles.

The $99 Motorola Droid Razr M arrives next week (Sept 13)

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 11:38 AM PDT

Motorola has a new Droid coming next week and it’s not the Droid Razr HD or Droid Razr Maxx HD.  No, this is the Droid Razr M,which is essentially a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED experience squeezed into the same body that would normally house a 3.5-inch display.  Priced at $99 with a contract, the Android 4.0 phone offers 8GB internal storage, microSD, 1GB RAM, NFC, and Kevlar coating.  In other words, it’s no slouch.

While we might have to wait until closer to the holidays for the Droid Razr HD and Droid Razr Maxx HD, the Droid Razr M shows up in Verizon stores a week from now. Motorola promises that this is not just last year’s technology squeezed into a different body, so we’ll have to see what the real-world users end up saying.

The Droid Razr pre-orders  begin at 5PM EST today, September 5 and will be available on September 13.  Pricing, as indicated above, is $99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and two-year service agreement.

Motorola officially debuts the Droid Razr HD, Droid Razr Maxx HD

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 11:30 AM PDT

Motorola is in New York today where they have officially announced the next generation of Droid Razr models.  Things get started with the Droid Razr HD, an Android 4.0 smartphone for Verizon. Details are pretty much what you would expect out of the two and include a 4.7-inch HD display, dual-core processor, 2500mAh battery, and 4G LTE support. The browser of choice for the Droid Razr HD is Chrome, even though the phone does not run 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Lest you thought we were getting just one phone, Motorola has also dropped the Droid Razr Maxx HD, and a Droid Razr M.  All three models are Ice Cream Sandwich-powered and are equipped for 4G LTE, but only one arrives in September. The Droid Razr HD and Droid Razr Maxx HD are expected in store before holidays, however the Droid Razr M hits Verizon on September 13.

Eric Schmidt talks up new Android numbers

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 11:14 AM PDT

Google’s Eric Schmidt, speaking at the Motorola event today, has just dropped some new figures on which show the tremendous growth of Android.  According to him, Android is now at 480 million install base and is growing at a rate of 1.3 million per day.  As for tablets, they account for a 70,000 per day (way behind you know who), but growing incredibly fast.  Crazy numbers considering where we were just a few months back at Google IO.

Samsung T889 headed to T-Mobile as Galaxy Note II?

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 10:35 AM PDT

It’s been just around a month now since T-Mobile added the Samsung Galaxy Note to their line up of smartphones.  Seems logical to start talking about the Galaxy Note II, right? The team over at TmoNews obtained a screenshot of the About Device page of a handset which shows the model number of SGH-T889. As some of you know, the original model of the Galaxy Note was SGH-T879 so it just kinda makes sense.

We’re hearing that the T-Mobile edition of the Galaxy Note II will keep the Quad-Core Exynos processor and run on their HSPA+ 42Mbps network.  The phone, like its international counterpart, will run Android 4.1.1   Jelly Bean, which should look good on the 720×1280 display.

We still don’t have any information regarding the price or release date. Stay tuned on AndroidGuys for more info.

Sprint highlights Samsung Galaxy S III, sharing features in new ad

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 10:00 AM PDT

The latest ad for Sprint is online and it shows the ease of which one can share video from one Samsung Galaxy S III to another. The commercial itself is pretty cool in that it shows a series of pictures of one girl from birth through age 12.  Check out out the ad below and see S Beam and AllShare in action. It’s not as funny as the last clip, but it’s a lot more heartwarming…

HTC to return to tablet fray with Flyer 2?

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 08:24 AM PDT

HTC is rumored to dip their toes back into the Android tablet waters as word of a Flyer 2 have started circulating.  According to an anonymous PhoneArena source, HTC is readying an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean tablet with a Snapdragon S4  processor, 7-inch (1280×768) display, a 3-megapixel rear camera, and 1-megapixel front-facing camera.  The next-generation Flyer is said to feature an anodized aluminum body, much like the HTC One S.

It’s possible that HTC might announce the tablet at their September 19 event, however we’ve got nothing solid that say they will for certain.  Looks like we’ll just have to wait it out, eh?

In the days of the Kindle Fire, Nexus 7, and Kindle Fire successor, consumers are going to expect a low-cost Android tablet.  Anything about $249 and HTC might as well forget about it.

comScore: Android, iOS grow while RIM dips below 10% share

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 08:04 AM PDT

We’re not going to beat you over the head with yet another report about how Android is the king of the smartphone market.  OK, maybe just a little bit.

It’s no surprise to see the latest comScore report shows Android growing 1.4 percent to hold 52.2 percent of the U.S. mobile market share.  It’s also nothing crazy to see that iOS picked up 2 percent themselves, now sitting at 33.4 percent.  What is weird to us, honestly, is to see that RIM now only holds 9.5 percent of the U.S. smartphone market.  Remember days when nearly every single smartphone you ran into was a BlackBerry?  It was not all that long ago, really.

As always, the comScore MobiLens report tracks the trends in the U.S. mobile phone industry over the course of a three month average and surveys more than 30,000 mobile subscribers.  For the period ending July 2012, comScore had these particular findings:

  • More than 114 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones during the three months ending in July, up 7 percent versus April.
  • Samsung ranked as the top OEM with 25.6 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers
  • Aside from Apple, HTC was the only OEM to see their share improve over the quarter, moving up 0.4 percentage points.

Mushroom GreenZero Wall Travel Charger (Micro USB) review

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 08:00 AM PDT

Need an extra charger for your Android smartphone or accessory and want to help save the world in the process?  Consider Bracketron’s new Mushroom GreenZero chargers and the peace of mind that comes with “doing your part”.  We’ve spent some time playing with these around the office and think they’re a pretty nifty package at a decent price.

What’s in the box?

  • Mushroom GreenZero Travel Charger with embedded microUSB cord

This guy weighs less than a pound and folds/wraps up to the size of a racquetball and comes in a green and white design.  Looking very “Android”, the Mushroom Charger is much like a standard charger and has a wall outlet plug and microUSB.  Where it’s better than the stock stuff is that it can be wrapped up and snapped away to pack in a backpack, purse, or bag.  Forget losing the cord, the wall plug, or both – it’s an all-in-one package.

Users can plug in a phone or accessory and start charging with the press of the "mushroom" button, with your hand or foot.  It took us a few times to get used to this as we’re accustomed to plugging in and walking away.  However, once we were familiar with it, the extra step was not a nuisance at all

AS to why this guy is so eco-friendly, it’s simple: Once your device is fully charged or unplugged, the charger automatically shuts off to save energy.  There’s no worry of trickling out nickels and pennies of electric for no apparent reason.

When you are ready to take the charger with you, simply roll the cord up around the charger and use one of the rubber chads to hold it into place.  The wall plug snaps in and creates a flush bottom so there’s no accidental poking or tearing of items in your bag.

Although we only tested the microUSB design, Bracketron offers two other models – a 30 pin Apple connector, and a USB plug for nearly everything else.  If you’ve got a handful of Android devices in the house, we say go with the microUSB, but the USB model does open the door to other items such as Nintendo DS, digital camera, etc.

What we liked

  • All-in-one design keeps us from losing something important
  • We love doing our part to leave a small footprint
  • Android fans will love the green and white color scheme

What we didn’t love

  • Not super easy to justify spending double a normal wall charger
  • Have to get used to activating the charger with the mushroom button

Where to buy the Mushroom GreenZero Wall Travel Charger (Micro USB)

You can pick one of these up directly from the manufacturer for about $29.95 if you’re so inclined.  There are also a number of retail partners who offer Bracketron products, some of which include Best Buy, Amazon, Staples, and Target.

Newly leaked HTC gets snapped in another blurry photo

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 07:14 AM PDT

A third image of the recently leaked HTC smartphone has surfaced, however it could very well be a leftover from the first time around.  Unlike the previous two photos, this one shows the device as it appears when looking directly at the screen.

The most plausible possibility is that this is the 5-inch device for Verizon that is rumored to feature a 1080p HD display.  Based on what we’ve seen so far, it’s hard to say anything to the contrary.

We’ve heard that HTC is also readying a faster, more powerful HTC One X with the codename of Endeavour C2.  Considering this unnamed phone doesn’t have the design cues of the current model, we don’t see any reason to substantiate the claim that this is that model.

Chinese site Techorz advises that this particular phone will offer consumers a quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 2GB RAM, and a 1080p or 720p HD display.  Also said to be running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, we’re just anxious to see what it’s called and when we can get our hands on it.  Here’s to learning more on September 19!

Check out the press release below for the full details as well as a number of self-congratulatory accolades and accomplishments.  Did you know that T-Mobile was the first carrier to offer an Android phone?!

T-Mobile Celebrates 10 Years of Innovation With Launch of Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data Plans
From the iconic Sidekick to industry's only national Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data plan,
T-Mobile continues to reinvent the mobile experience
BELLEVUE, Wash. — Sept. 5, 2012 — T-Mobile USA, Inc. marked the 10th anniversary of its T-Mobile brand in the United States by making its new Unlimited Nationwide 4G Dataplan available in stores today. The plan underscores T-Mobile's longstanding focus on delivering customer value and service excellence through constant innovation.
"Since our inception, we've always strived to shake up the industry with plans, network capabilities, and innovative products and services for our customers," said Brad Duea, senior vice president, product management, T-Mobile USA. "Today's release of our Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data plan continues our tradition of bold moves that enhance the customer experience and change the way wireless is done."
T-Mobile USA established its nationwide brand in September 2002 and has been quietly innovating ever since, beginning with Sidekick®, the first all-in-one wireless device with an unlimited data plan for consumers. The company is now one of the largest employers and best-kept secrets in the Seattle area, built on a legacy of wireless industry firsts, including these:
  • First Personal Coverage Check (2005) – Provided consumers with transparent view of network coverage where they live and work
  • First Wi-Fi Calling Service in U.S. (2007) – Allowed voice calling over Wi-Fi
  • First Android phone – T-Mobile G1 with Google (2008) – Kicked off wave of subsequent Android offerings
  • First U.S. carrier to launch an HSPA+ network (2009) – Today, T-Mobile's fast and dependable nationwide 4G network is available in 229 markets, reaching well over 220 million people
  • First to break from Subsidy Model (2009) – T-Mobile's Even More plans and later Value Plans allow customers to pay for their devices over time or to bring their own devices to T-Mobile
Today marks another first: T-Mobile becomes the only carrier with a nationwide 4G network to offer unlimited nationwide 4G data. Featuring no data caps, no speed limits and no overages, as well as fast, dependable nationwide 4G coverage, T-Mobile's new Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data plan offers the ultimate worry-free experience for data-hungry smartphone customers. The Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data plan is available at T-Mobile retail stores, on http://www.T-Mobile.com/unlimited-data-plan, and through select dealers and national retail stores.
To help customers quickly take full advantage of all the cool things smartphones can do — without limits or overages — T-Mobile customers who activate a new two-year contract on an Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data plan will be able to benefit from a sale on select 4G smartphones, including the HTC One S with $0.00 down payment, after $50 mail-in rebate card.1
For more information on the Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data plan and accompanying device sale, visit www.t-mobile.com/unlimited-data-plan. For more information about T-Mobile's decade of innovation, see the timeline and supporting fact sheet.

Via.Me Now Available on Android

Via.Me, the First App to Offer Photo, Video, Audio Filtering and Sharing to Multiple Social Networks, Is Now Available on Android

SAN FRANCISCO, CA  September 4, 2012  RadiumOne today introduced Via.Me for Android, an Android app that makes creating, filtering and sharing pictures, videos, audio notes, across multiple social networks as easy as two clicks. Via.Me is already available as both an iPhone app and destination website.

Since launching earlier this year in March, Via.Me has attracted a large and loyal following. The website, which many have compared to a combination of Tumblr, Pinterest and Instagram, is drawing over 12 million monthly unique visitors, and Via.Me’s iPhone app has attracted over 1 million users.

One reason Via.Me has found its audience is the variety of file types it handles, such as photos, videos and audio clips. ³Our community of users tell us they love being able to upload multiple types of content to their different social profiles,² observed Gurbaksh Chahal, CEO of RadiumOne.

But Via.Me is also the first photo, video and audio platform to provide a seamless user experience across mobile devices and the desktop, an increasing necessity in today’s multi-device world.

According to a recent study from Lopez Research entitled The Future of Mobile Is Right Time Experiences, the ability to create seamless experiences between devices and the desktop is increasingly important. As the report observes, mobile adoption has exceeded 120% in the US, as many individuals carry more than one connected device. These users expect a unified experience across all platforms.

Brands stand to be major beneficiaries of this shift. "Today, brands can build Right Time Experiences that integrate context from mobile devices and social interactions to deliver the right information or ad at the right time," said Maribel Lopez, Principal and Founder of Lopez Research. "Consumers do business with a brand, not a channel. Advertisers must provide experiences that bridge interactions across mobile, the web and storefronts."

Via.Me enables brands to connect the dots between different devices. As Keith Belling, Founder & CEO of popchips, explains, “The ability to easily publish content across multiple social platforms and create a consistent experience is a key reason why popchips is using Via.Me to enhance engagement with our audiences across the social landscape.” popchips is not alone: Via.Me has an impressive list of global brands using the platform including Kia Motors, Neiman Marcus, Sony Electronics, Fox Studios, among others.

Via.Me has another major benefit – results. As Chahal puts it, ³Through Via.Me, brands can realize more ROI from their existing social media investments by identifying new audience segments and retargeting on these segments across the Open Web.”

Some of Via.Me for Android standout features for consumers include:

  • Photo Filters - 17 best-in-class photo filters enable users to customize their favorite photos.
  • Multiple File Types - Upload photos, videos, audio and text
  • Real-Time Alerts - Receive instant notifications whenever someone you follow posts on Via.Me.
  • Easy Cross-Posting  Via.Me makes it easy to share across the most popular social networks like Facebook and Twitter in just two clicks.
  • Intuitive User Interface  The Via.Me app and website have an elegant and intuitive user interface that makes it fun and easy to create, share and discover.
