Logitech out of refurbished Revue units, now offering refunds for warranty issues

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 04:04 PM PDT

Logitech Revue

The Logitech Revue never had much of a lifespan to it really. Some folks who own one love it while others wish they never spent the money on it. There is some information though that folks need to be aware of. If you have a Logitech Revue and it breaks down, your chances of getting another from Logitech are slim to none.

Recently, an Android Central reader who was looking to get a replacement due to some display issues was told by Logitech customer care that Logitech has no more and cannot replace it. Instead, they offered a full refund for it provided he could provide the proof of purchase for the device. Given they still had it, Logitech is now sending a refund in 4-6 weeks.

Do you have a busted Logitech Revue that could be exchanged for warranty? If so, you might want to give Logitech a ring and see what they have to say. If you still have the receipt and it's a valid claim, you could get potentially get a refund. Just remember, it has to be a valid claim -- don't go busting up your Revue on your own just because.

Tomorrow's rumored Jelly Bean roll out for Sprint Nexus devices gets more confirmation

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 03:09 PM PDT

Jelly Bean!

A couple of hours ago we mentioned that some Sprint memos mention Jelly Bean for the Sprint Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus S 4G are coming, and we just got this tasty nugget to confirm. It's from internal Sprint system pages and tells us just the news we want to hear -- that Jelly Bean will begin rolling out Sep. 6 -- yes, that's tomorrow.

For the Galaxy Nexus the build will be FH05, and for the Nexus S 4G we're talking JRO03R. Both are versions of Android 4.1, untainted by overlays or OEM changes. If you haven't already hacked the living crap out of your Sprint Nexus device, get ready for your upgrade -- you're going to love it.

If you need some help or advice about getting ready (or rolling back to stock) be sure to head into the forums and get on the right path!

Motorola RAZR M reportedly coming to the UK with Intel inside

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 02:34 PM PDT

Android Central

All of Moto's new Verizon-bound DROID phones ship with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chip inside -- an SoC that's increasingly seen as the standard for high-end smartphones in 2012. However, when the RAZR M lands in the UK, it'll sport a different CPU -- an Intel Atom chip. UK tech blog Pocket-Lint is reporting that the British variant will indeed run an Intel chip, suggesting that the decision to plant an S4 in the U.S. versions may have been made for connectivity reasons. Qualcomm's S4 includes built-in LTE, whereas many competing chips do not. This also fits with the recent news that Intel would be represented at the UK announcement event later this month

The site reports that no changes will be made to the physical design of the phone, meaning the international HSPA+ RAZR M will look just like the Verizon LTE model. That means Brits will get the same ultra-thin bezel that we've seen on the Droid RAZR M.

We've seen a couple of Intel-powered Android phones already, but these have mostly been niche devices, rather than phones from top-tier manufacturers like Motorola, so the appearance of Intel's chips in a leading Motorola smartphone is certainly a big deal. We've reached out to Motorola for confirmation of this, as well as any possible changes to the internatonal RAZR HD and RAZR HD MAXX, and we'll keep you updated with any info they provide.

We'll be live in London for Motorola's international event on Sept. 18, where we're expecting to see the RAZR M, and perhaps some other devices, announced for the UK market. In the meantime, be sure to check out our hands-on coverage of the U.S. Droid RAZR M.

In addition, the latest update - version 0.5.3.56 - brings a better offline mode bar so you can understand why you're offline, new audio effects for Android 4.x devices and of course general improvements to fix crashes and bugs.

µTorrent Beta arrives on the Google Play Store, those with limited data plans need not apply

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 02:04 PM PDT

µTorrent Beta

Following up on their previous offering of µTorrent Remote which allowed for you to have direct access to torrents being downloaded on your computer and control them remotely, the folks from BitTorrent have now finally delivered a beta version of their long await full fledged torrent client for Android. Considering that it is a beta, there is still some kinks to be worked out but overall the features they've included are pretty nice:

  • Find, download and seed torrent files directly from your device.
  • Add RSS feed subscriptions from BitTorrent or elsewhere around the web.
  • No speed or size caps on downloads (mobile data limits still apply)

That last feature is the one you'll mostly need to be aware of. If you download a torrent file, you're going to be downloading the size of that file plus, whatever it contains. In addition to that, you'll end up 'seeding' that file as well, which means you'll be uploading it for others all through your carrier offered data plan. If you don't have an unlimited data, that certainly could spell trouble for a few folks if you're not mindful. µTorrent Beta is live in the Google Play Store right now, for those interested in giving it a go.

Sony Xperia T on target for late September release

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 01:51 PM PDT

Android Central

While some retailers had previously announced the Sony Xperia T for release in the UK today, the device failed to materialize on store shelves, leaving confusion as to when Sony's new international flagship would become available. We put the question to Sony at the company's summer showcase event in London today, where we were told that a late September release was on the cards. Specifically, Sept. 28 is being put forward as a likely, though not fully confirmed, release date.

It the Xperia T arrives around that time, it'll likely face stiff competition in the form of Apple's next iPhone, Samsung's Galaxy Note 2, as well as new devices from HTC, Motorola and Nokia. Nevertheless, Sony will be hoping its unique design, re-vamped software and strong camera credentials will help it win over smartphone buyers later this month.

Motorola Droid RAZR M hands-on

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 01:17 PM PDT

RAZRM

The runt of the RAZR litter is the much-rumored RAZR M, a device that's easy on the budget without skimping on many specs. You've got the same super-fast S4 processor as the rest of the RAZRs here, along with ICS (Jelly Bean's coming), 1 GB of RAM, and 8 MP camera. Performance-wise, the M is on par with the rest of the line--the main difference here is size: the footprint is considerably smaller than the RAZR HD and Maxx HD, a conscious effort by Motorola to engage those who aren't always looking for the biggest display.

Interestingly enough, despite the smaller footprint, the screen is only shrunk by a few tenths of an inch, down from the 4.7 inches on the RAZR HD and MAXX to 4.3 inches. With that comes lower resolution: we've only got qHD here on the M, but don't let that fool you. This display looks really great, and a welcome sacrifice for the $99 pricetag.

The RAZR M is a refreshing entry by Motorola, and sets a new standard for mid-level devices. Motorola has proven that you can have your cake and eat it too, and an affordable pricetag is no excuse for junky hardware. The M is up for presale today at 5 p.m. Eastern, and we're walking home with one, so sit tight for a full review in the coming week. Until then, enjoy some hands-on shots below.

Droid RAZR HD hands-on

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 12:59 PM PDT

RAZRHD.

After weeks of speculation, Motorola finally introduced its latest flagship device today, the Droid RAZR HD, a worthy successor to the phone that has kept the company competitve in the increasingly dense Android market. The RAZR HD is a worthy step-up from its predecessor, boasting a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED display with 720p resolution that gives just about every phone on the market a run for its money. It's big, it's beautiful, and it will simply blow you away if you're stepping up from a regular ole RAZR. It's just about as good as it gets.

The new RAZR line is incredibly powerful, with a Snapdragon S4 underneath the hood pushing along Ice Cream Sandwich. About that ICS-- Motorola had a mixture of demo units today with both ICS and Jelly Bean, and told reporters that Jelly Bean will be available for the entire line by the end of the year. Something tells me that they're rushing to get it onboard before the RAZR HD and RAZR HD Maxx launch, but don't hold your breath. Regardless, even with ICS, this thing flies, and earns its spot in the upper-tier of premium Android superphones.

Compared to the original RAZR, there are certainly noticeable differences but there are also many similarities. You've got Kevlar back for another round, though this time it wraps around the device, instead of being limited to the back panel only. The new RAZR also has a metallic perimeter, ala the iPhone 4S, that adds a certain sense of luxury to the device. It also adds a solid feel, something that's sorely missing from its major competitor, the plastic GS3. Motorola has always focused on quality hardware, but this iteration of the RAZR takes the company to a whole new level. The RAZR line just may be the most premium-feeling smartphones on the market today.

Motorola was tight-lipped on release date and pricing, though we can expect the RAZR HD sometime before holidays. Until then, some hands-on photos of the RAZR HD-- along with comparisons with the Maxx and M-- are below.

Rogers bringing the Motorola RAZR HD LTE to Canada

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 12:41 PM PDT

Motorola RAZR HD LTE

Something not mentioned during the Motorola and Verizon event understandably, was the fact Motorola also has a GSM version of the Droid RAZR HD that will be available soon. While U.S. carriers may not see it, Rogers in Canada has now confirmed they'll be carrying the Motorola RAZR HD LTE exclusively:

“Our customers want fast devices and we are thrilled to exclusively offer them the new Motorola RAZR HD LTE,” says John Boynton, executive vice president and chief marketing officer, Rogers Communications. “The Motorola RAZR HD LTE further extends our leadership as the carrier with the largest LTE superphone selection in Canada.”

Much like the Verizon announcement, no pricing or exact launch dates have been announced but Rogers set the expectation of 'this fall'. You can check out the full press release below if you need the finer details.

Droid RAZR Maxx HD hands-on

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 12:39 PM PDT

We're here in New York where Google and Motorola just introduced the first fruits of its collaboration, the brand new RAZR line. The RAZR Maxx HD is the successor to the wildly popular RAZR Maxx, and a worthy one it is: underneath the hood you've got a Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor, the same chip powering the GS3 and HTC One X. You've also got the Maxx's famous battery, which Moto says will get you through 32 hours of normal usage. Motorola's battery technology is unmatched at this point, and it's not about to let you forget it.

But the true upgrade here is the RAZR line's display-- the HD and Maxx HD both have a stunning 4.7 inch Super-AMOLED display that is right up there with Samsung and HTC in terms of clarity and vividness. I might even go on record and say it bests the GS3 in terms of color saturation, though my opinion may change after extended usage. it's simply stunning, and I don't have enough nice things to say about it.

Compared to the original Maxx, the second generation is a step up in terms of build quality-- the metal border, the slim bezel, the Kevlar coating, and the Gorilla Glass display all add up to one of the sturdiest smartphones on the market. And compared to the RAZR HD, the Maxx's size is nearly identical. While the Maxx feels just a few hairs heavier than the RAZR HD, thickness and dimensions will only be noticed by the most trained of eyes.

The models on-hand at today's launch were packing Jelly Bean, though Motorola says the new RAZR line might launch with ICS, with a 4.1 upgrade "before the end of the year." We hope that's not the case, but we'll take it if we have too-- a small price to pay for some of the best hardware Motorola has ever released. Check out some hands-on shots below.

All three new RAZRs will also be offered in a developer edition

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 12:21 PM PDT

Unlocked

One of the (almost) overlooked things from today's Motorola presentation in New York was news that Motorola will be offering a developer edition of all three of the new RAZR models announced today. This is great news for tinkerers interested in the RAZR M, the RAZR HD, or the RAZR Maxx HD.

We've heard this from Motorola before, and we're still waiting to see it develop, but there's one major change since the last big Motorola announcement -- Google. Google was very much on hand today, with Eric Schmidt opening the show, and he spent a good bit of time talking about how the two companies were going to mesh together. Hopefully, some of the DIY spirit Google fosters will spill over into Motorola Mobility and we'll see these soon.

For now, there's no word of availability or pricing, but we'll keep our ears on.

Motorola promises $100 credit towards a new phone if yours doesn't get Jelly Bean

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 12:07 PM PDT

Android Central

Motorola and Verizon's joint event today in New York kicked off with an awesome announcement: if your phone doesn't get a Jelly Bean update, they'll knock off $100 on your upgrade to one of the new Motorola devices. The details are still a bit sketchy, but it's great news, especially combined with their new developer initiative. Motorola said that they're aiming to roll out Jelly Bean to as many of their devices as possible. Apparently most of the ones launched since 2011 will be upgradeable, while all of the new devices announced today will either be launching with Jelly Bean or will have an upgrade in short order.

Being owned by Google is starting to have some perks, eh Moto? So, would you guys side with Motorola or any other device manufacturer that had a deal like this going on? It certainly eases the pain of staying up to date.

Motorola and Verizon announce the Droid RAZR Maxx HD

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 11:58 AM PDT

RAZR Maxx HD

Along with the new RAZR HD and RAZR M, Moto showed off the RAZR Maxx HD today in New York. It has the same great internals of the RAZR HD -- 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, NFC, 4.7-inch Super AMOLED under Gorilla Glass -- but has one pretty major change with the addition of a high-capacity battery that allows for 32 hours of "normal use".

We've got some sweet hands-on time with all the new Motorola devices coming shortly, stay tuned! In the meantime, the full press release is after the break.

Motorola and Verizon announce the Droid RAZR HD

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 11:52 AM PDT

Droid RAZR HD

And just like that, the Droid RAZR HD has gone official. Getting a little bit of an overhaul from previous generations the Droid RAZR HD will come with a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED HD display along with a 2500mAh battery and Android 4.0.4 preloaded. That's all in addition to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.5 GHz dual-core S4 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal storage and NFC with the obvious LTE connectivity. If you're concerned about the camera, that's an 8MP shooter.

Motorola was quick to note though that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean will be rolled out soon and even brought devices running Jelly Bean to the event for all to see first hand. Customers will also have the choice between white and black options at launch but Motorola nor Verizon confirmed when launch would be but instead settled on saying 'before the holidays'. Other devices announced today include the Droid RAZR M and the Droid RAZR MAXX HD. You can jump below to see the Droid RAZR HD in action as well as read the full press release.

Motorola Google

Eric Schmidt has made his presence known at the Motorola-Verizon event in New York City by appearing on stage first and as such, he decided to go ahead and share some of the latest numbers for Android activations and installs. The number has grown significantly over the years and has now moved past the 1 million mark and is now tracking 1.3 million device activations per day. To go along with that, Schmidt also noted Android now has an install base of 480 million users and the Google Motorola relationship will only help that to continue to grow from here on out.

There's not a lot to it that you don't see here. It's half black, half white, with a barely (but still) visible seam down the middle.

Nope, you can't buy one. It's special-made for folks, well, for folks more special than us.

But we do have some more pics for you after the break. Enjoy.

Sony Xperia Tablet S gets bunch of official video demos

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 09:20 AM PDT

Android Central

The Sony Xperia Tablet S didn't make a huge splash when it was announced last week at IFA, seeing as it looked like not much more than a marginally souped-up version of its predecessor, but this batch of video demos may change your mind. They go over a lot of the new software features that Sony is launching in their latest tablet, including guest mode, small apps, the universal remote, a Walkman app, and the custom multimedia album.

The Sony Xperia Tablet S is a decent step up from the original Sony tablet. Here's a quick run-down of the specs. A closer look is available over here in our hands-on video.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 may hit T-Mobile as the SGH-T889

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 08:31 AM PDT

Android Central

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has just recently been announced, and we're already showing signs of life on T-Mobile U.S.A. This screenshot shows a device model T889, which, after a bit of deduction and cross-referencing with UAProf data, suggests that it's the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 2. the source of the screenshot says that T-Mobile's version will be keeping the Exynos quad-core 1.6 GHz processor, and tap into their 42 Mbps HSPA+ network. We're expecting this bad boy to launch in mid-October in Europe, but there's still no indication as to when we'll see the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 on this side of the pond.

What's all the fuss about? Well, here's a reminder of the Galaxy Note 2's specs.

  • Network: 3G: HSPA+ 21Mbps (HSDPA 21Mbps / HSUPA 5.76Mbps); 4G LTE: 100Mbps/ 50Mbps
  • Processor: 1.6 GHz quad-core processor
  • Display: 5.5” HD Super AMOLED (1,280 x 720)
  • OS: Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean)
  • Camera: Main (Rear): 8 Megapixel Auto Focus Camera with LED Flash, BSI; Sub(Front): 1.9 Megapixel VT Camera, BSI; Best Photo, Best Faces, Low light shot

Be sure to check out our hands-on with the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 from IFA for a closer look. It is definitely a sweet-looking device. Hopefully we'll get some indications of a launch on other U.S. carriers soon. Any T-Mobile customers considering holding out for this one, assuming it lands before the holidays? Maybe give that new unlimited data plan a shot?

T-Mobile kicks off new unlimited data plan

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 07:10 AM PDT

Android Central

To mark its 10th. anniversary, T-Mobile U.S. has launched its new Unlimited Nationwide "4G" Data plan, available as of today.

The plan has no data caps, speed limits or overages, and includes an extra discount on new devices like the HTC One S when signing on for a new two-year plan. The data plan cost depends on your core voice and text plan; if you're on the Value plan, the new Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data plan costs $20/month, while it costs $30 if you're on the Classic plan. So, to get unlimited everything on T-Mobile and a subsidized phone, it'll cost $89.99/month - $69.99 without the phone.

The plan was announced earlier this summer, and should do well to compete with Sprint (the only carrier to continue boasting unlimited plans for awhile now) for the back-to-school rush. Sprint has the added bonus of LTE for now, though that's only really a selling point if you're in a coverage area. With T-Mobile and Sprint waving the "Unlimited" flag high, what are the odds that Verizon and AT&T will revisit their decisions to nix those plans?

If you're interested in signing up, you can check out the details of T-Mobile's new plans over here. Any takers?
