Posted: 31 Mar 2012 08:38 PM PDT

There’s a bunch of ways to make new friends and using social media is definitely one of the easiest way to do so. Two great examples in this regard are Facebook and Twitter, but did there’s also an Android app that provides a similar function and more.  Developed by ConceptWorks, the Spontacts app allows for spontaneous friend-making with people or contacts with the same interest in your neighborhood or places near you.  The name of the app itself is a portmanteau that suggests what it deals with best: spontaneity and contacts.

Aside from that, there is also an option to explore activities, places, and public events in a location that you prefer, helping you find like-minded people anywhere around the globe.

It doesn’t matter whether you are a music lover, a sports fanatic or even the geeky type because Spontacts can help you find people whom you can share your thoughts and interest with. It’s a cross-platform application (currently available for Android and iOS), which means more possibility for you to meet people who share the same interests as you do.

Using Spontacts

Before you can use this app, you have to register an account. If you have a Facebook account, you can also use it to log in. And, before you can make some friends, you have to fill up your account with your personal details to help the app find friends and events that suit you best.

After providing the app with your account details, you are then introduced to the app’s homescreen and from there you can find a list of all the Spontacts activities in your area. If you want to join an activity, just tap an event from the list and confirm that you are joining. You can also leave a comment if you want to.

If there are no events available in your location or if you don’t feel like joining available events, you can also opt to find other events in a different location that you might want to go. Just tap the placemark icon which you can find at the top and then go to a different location.

You will find several tabs/buttons on the bottom of the app’s screen: Activities, People, New, Offer, and Me. In the People Tab, you will find all the contacts from the app’s address book.  Of course it’s always great to bring along some old friends to join the gig. You can also invite the contacts on your phone to the events using Spontacts.

In the Offer tab, you will find all the events (whether public or commercial) and also the places of interest. You can take a look at these offers on the map which will be displayed along with the contact details and important information. There’s also the Me tab where you can manage your profile, check your inbox, or tweak some of the app’s settings.

If you want to create a new activity you can do so by tapping the New button. Provide event details such as location, time/date, and the people invited and your event is ready to go. You may also restrict the attendees, in case you don’t want to invite the general public.

Nervous much? HTC takes legal action against HTC blog for unboxing video

Posted: 31 Mar 2012 11:58 AM PDT

HTC-One-S-0003
In what is certainly a surprisingly aggressive move, HTC France has undergone legal action against a French HTC enthusiast website called HTC-Hub. According to the site in question, they have seriously pissed off the Taiwanese manufacturer by publishing an unboxing video of the HTC One S roughly a week before its official release. In addition, the French division of HTC went as far as to seize the handset from HTC Hub via a court order. This entire affair is without precedent in the smartphone blogging world.

In case you weren't aware yet, it has become much of a tradition for smartphone manufacturers to send out review units of their upcoming devices to smartphone bloggers, many days before the actual release of a phone. The reason why you never see smartphone reviews popping out long before the device hits the market is because, when issuing demo units to bloggers, manufacturers force bloggers to sign embargo agreements that basically mean they cannot post any information regarding the smartphone until a certain date and hour. This is the same model that major video-game reviewers know inside-out.

htc_hub_legal

As reported by HTC-Hub bloggers, when they have contacted HTC's PR agency in France (called Hopscotch), official representatives informed them that review copies of the HTC One S will not be available until its release date next week. Inpatient and well connected as they were, the guys at HTC-Hub were able to get their hands on an HTC One S smartphone without going through official channels, meaning they did not sign an embargo agreement. Unfortunately for the people behind HTC-Hub, HTC filed charges against the blog only a few days after they've published an unboxing video (it wasn't even a review video for that matter).Obviously, this entire problem could have been avoided, if it wasn’t for the communication problems that PR agency Hopscotch showcased. Infringing videos can be taken off following a single email, but as it turns out, that email never really came. Why take this matter directly into court is a question nobody has the answer for, but it sure seems like HTC and their PR agency seriously overreacted this time. Why can't we all just get along?Did HTC do the right thing by going directly into court? Did they overreact? Let us know what you guys think in the comment section below!

Gravity Project: A fast-paced run-and-jump 3D game to test your reflexes

Posted: 31 Mar 2012 11:38 AM PDT

Do you like playing games that require the quickness of your eyes as well as your reflexes? If you do, here’s a fun game that you might want to play on your Android device. Gravity Project is a game that involves dodging different obstacles just to get to the finish line. The thing is, it’s not like old-school Super Mario because it’s fast-paced, so you really have to keep an eye on things that might hit your character or else you are sent back to the starting line.

Gravity Project provides non-stop action and adventure, with perfectly designed venues, maps, excellent game physics, barriers, and character. Gravity Project surely will send you on a thrill ride because you don’t just need to watch out for the obstacles but also cope with the acceleration of the game. A lot of game players like it not just because of the thrilling game play but also because of the high quality 3-dimensional graphics which make the experience even more realistic.

Playing Gravity Project

The game has some similarities with Temple Run. When you start playing the game, your character is thrown inside of something that looks more like a spaceship’s hallway with zero gravity. From then on, your character will start running until he reaches the end of that level. It seems easy, but in every level you have to dodge walls, cubes, lasers and other obstacles that could hit you.

What makes this game even more exciting is that there are no save-game points which means that you have to finish the level or else you keep going back to the start . There is a time limit, so you have to be fast to beat the time and reach the finish line. If the time runs out and you have not reached the end yet, then the level will automatically restart.

Aside from the obstacles that make the game challenging, there is also some consolation for those who find it difficult. At every level you can pick up coins which extend the time limit for that level.

The graphics of the game is quite impressive.  We didn’t experience any lag or freeze unlike other heavy-graphic games we’ve tried. User reviews also proved that many liked the game and some are even pressuring the developer to add new levels and release new updates soon.

name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/KhMlTlv7fLM?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0″ />name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true” />value=”always” /> type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always”allowfullscreen=”true” />

If you want to play this game, you can download Gravity Project free from the Google Play Store.

Watch HTC’s beautiful new One Series commercial

Posted: 31 Mar 2012 09:21 AM PDT

htc one series

HTC is leaving no stone unturned with the promotion of its One series. With three phones in the lineup, the HTC One X, One S, and the One V, HTC is hoping to get a head start on the competition (ok, on the Samsung Galaxy S3) with a worldwide release slated for next week.

As part of its promotional campaign, HTC released a brand new ad, which visibly attempts to create a personal connection between potential buyers and HTC and its products. In the ad, HTC claims to have “listened” to the users, to create a lineup of devices that will suit everybody’s needs, because “no one person is exactly the same as everyone else.” On a side note, we recently argued that HTC is, in fact, listening to users, and the results are impressive.

Check out the ad for yourself here:

The commercial doesn’t show off the phones much, but is more of an attempt at increasing brand recognition of the One series. HTC has certainly taken the One branding and run with it, with even the device unboxing revealing a screen protector with the message “I’m the one you’ve been waiting for.” I would have definitely liked to see the phone hardware and software being put through its paces in ad, at the least using the phone to show the Youtube and Facebook sequences, instead of a PC browser.

Nevertheless, it’s a great attempt at getting HTC’s new message out there – that we, the customers, are the biggest asset.

What do you think of the ad? Is HTC finally heading in the right direction with its products and advertising? Will an HTC One phone be your first choice?

XRY forensic software can crack iOS or Android devices in a jiffy, not for home use!

Posted: 31 Mar 2012 08:37 AM PDT

xri forensic tool android

If you've ever dreamed of becoming a digital CSI expert, you should know that there's a new software tool around the corner that should crack pretty most iOS or Android device in a matter of minutes, and also help recover data from the respective gadgets.

As you might suspect, the XRY Complete is not for entertainment and home use, but for law enforcement agencies representatives only. Regardless of that, it's interesting to know about these things, even if you’re not a forensic specialists (watching CSI: New York does not count).

Before you start telling me that any kind of software can be cracked and used for home purposes, I find myself obliged to disappoint you and tell you that you need quite some serious references to get a hold of an XRY license number, so don't get any funny ideas! As for the people who actually get to use the app, I would think (or at least hope) that they know what they are doing and they know better than to let it leak to potentially harmful hands.

After this unnecessary (or maybe not) long introduction, let's get down to today's order of business and finally talk a bit about XRY. Well, the software application runs on Windows and, according to the manufacturers, can recover data, both live and deleted, from any kind of mobile device in use nowadays.

Combining some logical and physical analysis tools that, honestly, surpass my powers of understanding, the XRY Complete is apparently the first choice among law enforcement agencies worldwide. I said "apparently", because, while trying to dig up some extra details about XRY, I stumbled over a very interesting article posted on Micro Systemation's blog.

Micro Systemation is XRY's manufacturing company and, according to this article, the tool might not work so easily on "any iOS or Android device". As a matter of fact, it might actually only work on a limited number of gadgets.

If an Android device has a passcode activated and the device doesn't have the USB debugging mode turned on, there's a good chance that XRY won't work. And what devices don't have USB debugging activated? Well, pretty much any gadget that hasn't been jailbroken/rooted.

Also, many new smartphones and tablets released during the past year or so are supposedly unbreakable by XRY. Apple's iPhone 4S and iPad 2, as well as many Android Gingerbread, Honeycomb (and, of course, Ice Cream Sandwich) devices are on the long list of products unsupported by the software.

On the other hand, manufacturers will be releasing an important update in the near future, according to an official announcement posted on their blog. The announcement is dated February 20, but unfortunately there isn't any exact date hinted by the guys at Micro Systemation.

The update should offer support for many new devices, but these are themselves unspecified, so for the time being, if you own a high-end Android gadget of some sorts, you probably can keep going with your illegal activities (just kidding, guys, illegal is not cool!).

More impressive numbers for Samsung: 10M Galaxy S3s pre-ordered, 1.75M Galaxy Ys shipped per month

Posted: 31 Mar 2012 08:10 AM PDT

Not-Bad-Obama-Meme

Just a couple of days after finding out that the Galaxy Note "phablet" has hit a whopping five million sales in just five short months, we now have another set of impressive Samsung figures to talk about.

On one hand, according to Eldar Murtazin, a very well-known technology journalist and blogger, cited by the guys at UnwiredView, the Galaxy S III, Sammy's future flagship, has already hit a whopping 10 million pre-ordered units.

That may not seem an awful lot, when Apple sold 1.7 million iPhone 4S devices in just three days of availability, but you should keep in mind that the Galaxy S III still doesn't have one single spec or feature officially confirmed.

We also have no idea for the time being how will the handheld look, what kind of screen it will sport, and how it will be priced, so for Samsung to already receive 10 million pre-orders is pretty awesome. I mean, we have had a bunch of rumors, speculations, leaked images and these kinds of things lately, but, for Pete's sake, we don't even know for sure if the S3 will run Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box.

Sure, the number has to be looked at with care, as it's far from being an official one, but I personally think that the information is at least partially true and accurate. I mean, we might not be looking at exactly 10 million S3s pre-ordered by now, but even four or five million would be impressive enough in my view.

The second piece of news comes from Strategy Analytics, one of the most recognized global research and consulting firm, who has told the guys at EE Times Korea that Samsung will most likely reach and even top 40 million smartphones shipped in Q1 2012 (which ends today).

That much we knew, or at least suspected a couple of days back, but what we didn't know is that a big chunk of the 40 million or more figure comes from Galaxy Y sales. That's right, those raggedy entry-level smartphones with poor screens, 2 MP cameras, and 800 MHz processors are big hits in emerging markets like Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, or South America.

No less than 1.75 million such devices are apparently being shipped on average every month all around the globe, and, while they're not as expensive as the Galaxy S II or Galaxy Note, they still bring Sammy a considerable amount of cash.

50 million or more in Q2? Most likely!

So, we (possibly) have 10 million S3s already pre-ordered, 1.75 million Galaxy Ys being shipped every month, at least five million Galaxy Notes to be sold during the following couple of months (according to estimates), as well as millions of Galaxy S2s, and so on and so forth.

Can we therefore expect Samsung to top 50 million smartphone sales in Q2 2012, as estimates made by ET News predicted a couple of days ago? Definitely, as far as I'm concerned, with, of course, one condition. The Galaxy S III has to hit stores by the beginning of June. If it won't, though, it will surely come in time for Samsung to have an impressive Q3, so all in all the Korean-based electronics giant can't possibly lose.

On the other hand, I find myself in the position to once again urge my readers to not rely on rumors and speculations so much and to wait for products to hit the market and be thoroughly tested before getting overly excited. I mean, there's still a chance that the Galaxy S3 will be a disappointing follower to one of the best Android smartphones ever, and, if that will happen, Sammy will certainly start losing momentum by the day.

Before something like that happens, though, we should hope for the best and once again bow before what certainly is the most popular and successful Android smartphone manufacturer right now. Congrats, Samsung, and keep up the good work!

TurboTax free on Android tablets just for this weekend, procrastinators rejoice

Posted: 31 Mar 2012 07:50 AM PDT

With the American tax return filing deadline just around the corner (April 17), many people are scrambling to complete their returns on time, a tedious activity that is, at least by some, ignored throughout the year. “If only there was something that would make this whole process easier,” you say? Well, yes, there is. And it’s now available for FREE on Android (with some fine print).

Inuit’s TurboTax is a software that makes preparing and filing your taxes easy. It gives clear, easy-to-follow directions and provides a step-by-step guidance that shows you what needs to be done at each turn. The software is free to download, with payment required only at the time of filing.

TurboTax is now available as an app for Android tablets and the iPad. The app, similar to the PC or Mac software, provides you with a walkthrough of every tax deduction and credit you are qualified for.

Valued at upwards of $50, TurboTax is now free, for a limited time only, for Android devices. If you own a Honeycomb or ICS tablet, all you have to do is download the app, and just get started on your returns filing (you can complete it at a later date) before or on Sunday, April 1. You will not only be able to  file your taxes quickly and easily, but you’ll also get one-on-one tax advice from the company’s experts if you get stuck along the way.

Unfortunately, there is no support for Android handsets yet, so you will only be able to use this app on an Android tablet.

So for all those people who still haven’t gotten around to working on their tax returns, and you just happen to own an Android tablet, here is perfect opportunity to get things done easily before the looming deadline.

Who ever said procrastination doesn’t pay off?

Flurry: Google Play is way behind Amazon’s Appstore in terms of in-app purchases

Posted: 31 Mar 2012 07:34 AM PDT

google amazon money

According to a recent study conducted by mobile app analytics firm Flurry, Google Play (it still has an odd ring to it, doesn’t it?) is not only behind the iTunes App Store when talking about revenues from in-app purchases, but is trumped by Amazon Appstore's ability of getting users to pay for these kinds of "acquisitions".

The guys at Flurry conducting the study showed that, for every dollar earned through in-app purchases on Apple's iOS, Amazon's Appstore generates $0.89, while Google Play only makes $0.23. That's pretty good for Amazon, considering that the Kindle Fire, their only device generating in-app purchases, is still a toddler compared to Apple's iPhones and iPads or Android's smartphones and tablets.

On the other hand, Google Play seems to be going through a serious crisis, with the vast majority of users being only tempted to download and install free apps, or, at least, applications that don't need any purchases in addition to the download cost.

Flurry's report cannot be considered 100% reliable, not including up-front app purchases and advertising revenue, so it would be unfair to say that Google Play is not making profits or is an utter and complete failure for app developers. However, it has to be said that such disappointing numbers might in fact determine more and more top developers to primarily focus on Apple's and Amazon's App Stores, and leave to Google Play only the most basic and free-to-play apps.

To better  understand how the researchers at Flurry reached their conclusions and where do these numbers come from, you should know that the analytics company measured the revenue earned via in-app purchases by several popular apps on iOS, Android and Amazon app stores, over 45 days.

We don't know exactly how many apps were considered in the making of the study, and, personally, I  also doubt that the 45-day period was fit to offer relevant data for a large portion of users. On the other hand, I think that no one can question the fact that Google Play is overshadowed by both Apple's and Amazon's app stores, when it comes to true user engagement and willingness to pay for receiving quality features and quality apps.

I'm not going to end this article on a very dark note, as I don't see Google Play's problems being as serious as this report suggests, but it's pretty obvious that something has to be done soon. Apple is probably out of Google's reach for a while, but Amazon is clawing its way to second place on the app store market niche. We need more challenging, engaging, and addictive apps on Google Play and we need them yesterday!

Google Drive to offer 5GB of free cloud storage space: leaked screenshot

Posted: 31 Mar 2012 06:14 AM PDT

google-drive
As portable hard-drives slowly become (to a certain extent) obsolete, an increasing number of people want to be able to remotely access data from any device with an internet connection. This is exactly what cloud storage aims to provide. Be it a movie, a word document, or a zip archive, cloud storage services enable you to access information you've previously uploaded from virtually every Internet-enabled corner of the world (odd, since the Earth is round).

The potential of development is huge, so every major web company is trying to grab a piece of the cloud storage pie, from Microsoft (SkyDrive) to Apple (iCloud). According to a couple of rumors fueled by leaked screenshots, Google is planning to soon release their own cloud storage service, dubbed Google Drive.

The original rumor surfaced at GigaOM and claimed that Google Drive will become available in early April and will be limited to 1GB of data. At that point, many claimed that 1GB is too little storage space compared to the average 30GB offered by players in the (paid) cloud-based storage market, such as Dropbox, Box, and SugarSync.

A few days later, a screenshot of the desktop client for Google Drive was leaked, pointing towards a maximum 2GB of space offered for free. Fast forward another few days, and I am now here to report about a leaked screenshot of the Google Drive web-service, one the claims Google Drive will feature 5GB of free storage space. Most likely, you'll be able to buy more storage space, but the tariffs are obviously unknown at this point.

Google Drive

As the latest screenshot shows that Google Drive will include a document editor, there are some that think Google Drive might be launched as an extension to Google Docs, the cloud-based document editing service currently offered by the search giant. Others believe Google Drive will actually be integrated with Google + and that it will also include a photo and video editor (both features that Google currently offers in some of their services). If Google Drive turns out to be real (and I'm willing to bet it will), it's highly probable that we won't get an iOS app anytime soon as Google will probably want to use the service as an Android-only feature.

What's your take on Google Drive? Are the rumored 5GB of free storage space enough for your current needs? Will you be willing to buy more if the price is right? Let us know in the comment section below!

GT-i9300 might be the Samsung (Galaxy) M. It will follow your roving eye and stare back

Posted: 31 Mar 2012 05:19 AM PDT

Samsung-Galaxy-M

In the build up to an official announcement by Samsung about the Galaxy S3, we’ve been caught up in a whirlwind of rumors, ranging from unofficial specs releases to  supposed “leaked” images of the device. We recently covered one such rumor about “leaked” images of a Samsung device codenamed GT-i9300. Going by Samsung’s device naming scheme, this device was initially believed to be the Galaxy S3, but the public outcry over this seemingly mid-tier device quickly dispelled this rumor.

At this moment, a line from Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray comes to mind, which states “there is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.” In what might be a brilliant marketing move or just a giant misunderstanding, no one can really know for sure, the purported images of the Samsung Galaxy S3 has certainly got us curious and talking about the GT-i9300 as well.

Going with the flow of even more unsubstantiated rumors, here is what we (think) we know about the GT-i9300.

  • It may be called the Samsung M (notice the dropping of the Galaxy branding), although that’s not sure yet.
  • It will include an eye-monitoring feature, which will supposedly keep the display turned on if you’re looking at it.
  • If you are lying down, the device will change the orientation automatically and lock it.
  • It will feature an auto-dial system, that is said to automatically dial a contact if you read a message from said contact and then lift the phone to your ear.
  • With additional hardware, the device will be able to monitor your heart rate, temperature, and other biometrics.
  • It will be able to detect individuals from your contact list, in group photos, and will give you the option to share this photo with them.

Courtesy of Phone Arena

All of these would be amazing features to have on your smartphone, even though seemingly straight out of a science fiction story. Considering that GT-i9300 will most likely be a mid-range device, I do find it a little hard to believe. As the saying goes “Rumors are mostly not true, but that’s what makes them interesting.” All we can do is wait and hope for some sort of official announcement from Samsung.

What are your thoughts? Are these features something you would like in your next phone? Are we finally heading towards the truth or are we still slipping further down the rumor well?
