Samsung Galaxy S 4 Zoom for AT&T leaks
Oct 17th 2013, 13:54, by Robert Nazarian

AT&T_Samsung_Galaxy_S_4_Zoom_Leaked_Press_Render_01

If you’re an AT&T customer and looking for a new Android smartphone that sports a really good camera, then you will be happy to know that the Samsung Galaxy S 4 Zoom is coming to the carrier soon. Unfortunately we don’t have an idea as to when, but the leaked image confirms that it’s AT&T bound.

The Galaxy S 4 Zoom will be pitted against the Lumia 1020, which might have the best camera of any smartphone. The only problem with the Lumia 1020 is that it’s a Windows Phone.

We will keep you posted as soon as we hear when it will be released.

SwiftKey 4.3 beta debuts with new keyboard layouts, we go thumbs-on
Oct 17th 2013, 14:00, by Alex Dobie

SwiftKey 4.3

New 'thumb,' 'compact' and undocked modes make it easier to type on larger screens

The team behind popular third-party keyboard SwiftKey has announced a new version of the app today — SwiftKey 4.3. Dubbed "layouts for living," the new version of SwiftKey introduces a host of new layout options designed to make it easier to type on all kinds of Android devices, from smartphones to tablets and everything in between.

There are three main layout modes to choose from in SwiftKey 4.3, all accessible by pressing long-pressing the SwiftKey menu button. "Full" is the regular SwiftKey layout existing users will already be familiar with. "Compact" gives you a smaller keyboard aligned to the left or right side, depending on which hand you want to use. And "thumb" mode gives you a split keyboard for easier two-handed thumb-typing, best suited for tablet users.

More after the break.

SwiftKey beta update brings "Layouts for Living," a way to resize your keyboard however you want
Oct 17th 2013, 14:11, by Quentyn Kennemer

Swiftkey, one of Android’s major keyboard replacement apps, is getting an upgrade in the beta channel today. The biggest change is “Layouts for Living,” which gives users the ability to create custom keyboard layouts. Not all tablets and phones are made equally, so instead of providing a one size fits all solution, SwiftKey wants users to be able to craft the perfect keyboard layout for their particular situation.

SwiftKey Layouts for Living 2

"Allowing people to manipulate the location, size and layout of the keyboard not only makes it easier to type – it gives our users a more personalized way to interact with their technology and each other," said co-founder and CTO Ben Medlock. "We are committed to creating world-class user experiences that marry our powerful language technology with interfaces that learn and adapt to each user's needs."

Of course, you won’t have to put in much work for a decent layout for your device, as SwiftKey is providing three common presets:

  • Compact: On many larger phones it can be difficult to enter text and hold the phone with just one hand. This new feature minimizes the width of the keyboard and allows for easier typing with one-hand or gesture typing using SwiftKey Flow. It also frees up more of the screen estate on tablets.
  • Full: Users with large screens can now opt for a full-width keyboard with left-right cursor control keys and a backspace key above the "Enter" key. By placing the keys closer together, this new layout mimics the experience of two-handed typing on a physical keyboard.
  • Thumb: For people typing on tablets in landscape and with wide phones in portrait the keyboard can be split into two sections, enabling fast, comfortable typing with both thumbs.

Finally, SwiftKey has announced that phone and tablet versions of the keyboard have been merged, meaning you can buy it once and have it available for any of your devices. SwiftKey says it’s to eliminate the “guesswork,” though we’d be a bit worried if you didn’t know whether you had a phone or a tablet. (Well, there are phablets, but you get the idea.)

Those in the SwiftKey beta program can get the new Layouts for Living update here. Be sure to submit feedback about any bugs and crashes as often as you can so the upgrade can head to the Google Play Store even faster. Let us know if you’ll be getting in on this in the comments section below.

Samsung Galaxy S4 officially scores Android 4.3
Oct 17th 2013, 13:31, by Scott Webster

The Samsung Galaxy S4 (GT-I9505) has officially started seeing its Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update. According to SamMobile, the release is not so much visual as it is optimization and back-end stuff. The handset is said to be much faster with the update and benchmark scores are reported to be higher.  There’s no formal changelog to share however the blog has put together a detailed list of their finding.

Keep in mind that this is the international model and that market availability will vary. Keep an eye on your device and watch for the notifications. Those in the U.S. under a carrier’s thumb might be waiting a little longer, but it should not be far off.

To update your Galaxy S4 to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean you’ll to connect your phone to your computer and use Samsung KIES. The other, more popular option is to download and install via OTA. To do so,  go to Settings > More > About Device > Software update > Update.

Moto Maker now offers automatic transfer from iCloud to Google
Oct 17th 2013, 13:58, by Dustin Karnes

If you’re looking at coming to Android from an iPhone, then this could be of interest. Over at Moto Maker, where you can create and buy your own personalized Motorola Android device, there is now an option to automatically pull down your information from iCloud backups and transfer them into Google-usable information. The process is simple enough – just enter in your iCloud login, and you’re then presented with an estimated time for completion of the transfer. Once the conversion of information completes, the user is presented with their Google account – complete with all their contacts and calendar appointments. There’s even a how-to on removing duplicate entries.

While other companies offer this same type of service for transfer, this is the first time it’s been offered online, directly from the manufacturer.

HTC says no One Max for Canada
Oct 17th 2013, 13:57, by Quentyn Kennemer

When the HTC One Max was still a rumored device, we thought a Canadian would be a sure-fire bet. Verizon was already tipped ahead of the announcement, and Sprint announced plans to sell the device shortly after the press release came through the newswire.

HTC-One-Max

So why wouldn’t Canada get a shot, right? Well they aren’t, according to a statement received by MobileSyrup:

"HTC devices differ from country to country, we work closely with carrier partners in each region to determine what is best for their consumers. Every market is different and has specific needs and demands.

We consider a number of factors such as, the HTC devices currently available, the competition etc. At this time the current HTC line up of devices is sufficient for the Canadian marketplace."

We’re not sure if the carriers are rejecting the One Max or if HTC just has no interesting launching there. We’re leaning toward the latter, because we find it hard to believe that every single major carrier in the Great White North stand on the same side of the line.

With that, some may begin letting their assumptions get the best of them. Whatever the case may be, Canadians will have to look toward their friends in Europe if they want a smartphone that’s somewhat compatible with their networks, as there are no current plans for AT&T or T-Mobile to carry the device here in the United States. Bummer. Any of you folks up north affected by this news?

Oct 17th 2013, 13:49, by Robert Nelson

Best Buy will soon be adding a few additional smartwatches to the available lineup. The latest are coming from MetaWatch and will include the Strata and Frame. These will be exclusively available with Best Buy and available online and in-stores beginning on November 3rd. Each of these watches has a bit of a different look, however they both bring support for Android smartphones.

metawatch-strata-540

First things first, the Strata will be $179 and the Frame will be $229. The folks at MetaWatch tout these two as bridging the gap between fashion and technology. But perhaps more important are the specs and features. Each of these watches have a battery that should be able to last for roughly 5 to 7 days between charges and they will each also serve as companion display for your phone.

These pair using a Bluetooth 4.0 connection and will provide “subtle” vibrations for messages, emails and calls as well as upcoming appointments, tasks, reminders and more. And similar to what we are seeing with other smartwatches, that ‘and more’ also includes music controls. MetaWatch users will also get glanceable information in the form of weather, stock info, phone battery life and more. Both models have a display that should be easily readable even in direct sunlight.

metawatch-frame-540

While these two watches share many of the same specs, there are some differences. The watch sitting towards the top of the post is the Strata and the one further down is the Frame. The Strata is a sport watch with a 5 ATM water-resistance . The Frame is touted as being “stylish and elegant” and features a leather band with polished stainless steel case. The Frame is water resistant to 3 ATM. Lastly, Best Buy will have the Strata and Frame in retail stores in black with additional colors available online.

LG G Pad 8.3 US availability begins today
Oct 17th 2013, 13:20, by Robert Nelson

The LG G Pad 8.3 tablet has been rolling out globally and it looks like there has been another release. The latest is the US, where the tablet will be available by way of Best Buy. The retailer will have the LG G Pad 8.3 available beginning today for those shopping online. Elsewise, in-store availability will begin on November 3rd.

SlashGear-1020_20130905_03_40_53_Pro-LG-G-Pad-8.2-SG-540x303

LG originally announced the G Pad 8.3 back in early-September during IFA 2013. We did spend a bit of hands-on time with the table during the show. For that we have some images (as well as the video) sitting below. In terms of the specs, LG has this one sporting an 8.3-inch IPS display with a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1200 and a ppi of 273.

The tablet is powered by a quad-core 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor which is paired with 2GB of RAM. Other specs include 16GB of storage, a microSD card slot with support for cards up to 64GB, 4600 mAh battery and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. The tablet will also have a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera.

Otherwise, in addition to Jelly Bean, and similar to what we have been seeing with other LG offerings — this one has features to include QPair, QSlide Function, Slide Aside, QuickMemo and others. These are all LG features and QPair in particular aims at keeping those with an LG tablet and smartphone in sync. LG describes QPair as being a “seamless extension to their Android smartphones by providing simultaneous access to recently opened apps, incoming calls, text messages and more.”

That all being said, the tablet is priced at $349.99.
