Leaving an old, familiar platform behind may be hard enough in itself, but that is further complicated by worries about the hundreds of pieces of information you’ve already accumulated. That is why Motorola is trying to make it easy for new owners of their Moto X smartphone to transfer their contacts and calendars over from their iPhones.
Android manufacturers are quite familiar with the emotional attachment iPhone users have to their devices, so any bit that will ease the migration over to an Android device definitely helps. Early this week, Sony released an updated Xperia Transfer service that does just that, helping iPhone or other Android smartphone users transfer their contacts, calendars, messages, and even photos and videos over to a new Xperia smartphone. Now Motorola is also playing that game, offering a slightly similar service via it’s MotoMaker online ordering and customization system for the Moto X.
The process is quite straightforward. Just signify on the MotoMaker page that you have an iPhone, enter your iCloud username and password as well as your Google Account details. There are, however, a few things to note of. The first is that iCloud and Google contacts and calendars don’t have all the same field names, but all data will nevertheless be copied albeit with somewhat different labels. Furthermore, only one iCloud account can be used per Google Account and trying to sync a second iCloud account will overwrite the first one. Luckily, Android allows multiple Google accounts to be set up, so it is possible to sync a second iCloud account with a second Google account.
The feature is still at its infancy and, at least for now, only supports migrating contact and calendar data. Motorola VP for product management Punit Soni, however, is hopeful that this will lay the groundwork for an even better migration tool in the future.
