Are these specs of the Galaxy S2 Plus and Galaxy Premier?

Posted: 01 Sep 2012 01:39 AM PDT

Allow us to provide a distraction from the red hot Galaxy Note 2 for a while, as fresh information about the Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus and Galaxy Premier (also known as Superior) has made it to our desks. What we have here is the possible sheet of specs for the two unannounced phones from Sammy.

Here are the leaked specs of the Galaxy S2 Plus (GT-I9105) and Galaxy Premier (GT-I9260) that Sam Mobile has gotten their hands on.

Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus:

  • 4.3-inch WVGA Super AMOLED Plus Display
  • Single-core 1GHz MSM7227A-1 Turbo
  • 8MP rear camera, 2MP front-facing camera
  • 16GB/32GB and microSD card slot (up to 32GB)
  • 1,650mAh battery
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • 125.3 x 66.1 x 8.5 mm

Samsung Galaxy Premier:

  • 4.65-inch HD Display
  • Single-core 1GHz MSM7227A-1 Turbo
  • 8MP rear camera, 2MP front-facing camera
  • 8GB/16GB and microSD card slot (up to 64GB)
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
  • 133.97 x 68.1 x 8.8 mm

The same source said that the two phones will be geared towards the mid-range market; retailers should be able to order them starting from week 47 this year.

Notice anything odd about the supposed specs above? Let's start with the use of a positively ancient single-core 1GHz processor. Didn't they say a week ago that the Galaxy S2 Plus and Galaxy Premier (Superior) would be sporting a dual-core 1.5GHz processor? The Galaxy Premier (GT-I9260) has been rumored to be the next Nexus phone, but seeing the processor and the inclusion of a microSD card slot points out that that won't be the case.

Leaked specs come and go, and for now, this is what we have to play with. Until we hear something more concrete, we shouldn't lose sleep over it. What do you think of the supposed specs of the Galaxy S2 Plus and Galaxy Premier?

Facebook to target advertisements based on user ID, email, mobile number

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 07:17 PM PDT

We’re friends, you and I (and a billion other people).

Facebook isn’t exactly the most trusted company when it comes to user privacy. A new policy might be cause for concern for some users. Facebook is now allowing premium advertisers to target their campaigns based on mobile numbers and email addresses.

The new functionality, currently being tested among select advertisers, will require advertisers to upload their own customer lists, which may include email addresses and mobile numbers. Said functionality was temporarily available in the Power Editor tool, reports Inside Facebook and is accessible through a “Custom Audiences” tab.

Facebook has pointed out, though, that this feature will not give advertisers any additional information over what they already have. The functionality will only match Facebook users with the email address, user ID or mobile number that an advertiser already has on their own database.

The feature has been in private testing for some time now, and will soon roll out to users with access to Facebook Premium.

Is Facebook going too far in ad targeting? Is ad-targeting through mobile numbers, user ID and email address an affront to user privacy, or will these help Facebook improve its user experience by ensuring social network users only see ads that are likely to be interesting?

Best new Android apps of the month (August 2012 edition)

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 03:00 PM PDT

In some parts of the world, the end of August marks the end of the meteorological winter and the coming of the meteorological spring.  But, in the world of Android app development, every day and every month is a springtime of Android apps designed for performing nearly every conceivable human task.

What new sprouts emerged this month in the Android garden?  In this August 2012 edition of our series of posts about the best new Android apps of the month, we share with you thirty of the best that we were able to find.  As usual, these are hand-picked from a mix of various app types.

Find out what the ingenious app developers have thrown our way this month.  At the end of this long list, we’ll also let you in on our favorites from this bunch.

Monster Geeks

Got nothing to do? How about joining the Monster Geeks in their quest to defeat the Red Dragon? This is one of the funniest and cutest RPG games on your Android device.

If you are familiar with the PlayStation Portable game Patapon, Monster Geeks almost follows the same concept except that you won’t be controlling your army by musical rhythm. In this game, you will be controlling the Hero. This is the leader of the game. You can control your character by using the virtual buttons below the screen. You can also cast elemental spells on your enemies and healing spells to keep your army standing.

Aside from the main character, the game also allows you to have AI companions. These characters will help you during battles, but you won’t be able to control them. At the start of the game, you will have the Tanker and the Shaman on your quest to defeat the Red Dragon. You can unlock the Archer and Mage with gems.

The Monster Geeks can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store. But, you will have to endure the ads appearing in the background. Ads appear occasionally above the screen and are positioned in a way that won’t hinder you while playing the game. I also didn’t find an option to get rid of the ads.

The game has a shop where you can upgrade your characters and buy new items. You can use gold coins that you accumulated within the game to buy stuff. Some items can be only be bought using Gems. You can buy additional Gems by with real money.

Overall game experience was good and entertaining. I did not encounter any bugs or force close errors while playing the game.

VZW GS3 EZ-Unlock (Bootloader)

You can unleash the true potential of your Android phone once you unlock the bootloader. With an unlocked bootloader, you can flash custom recovery, ROMs, and kernels that would significantly boost the performance of your Android phone. If you haven’t unlocked the bootloader of your Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 SCH-I535, it’s the perfect time to do so with the VZW GS3 EZ-Unlock (Bootloader) app.

This app allows you to easily unlock and lock your Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3′s bootloader. You won’t need to input complicated commands at a terminal, or wade in confusing instructions to unlock your phone. Just launch the app and let it do the rest. But, before you enjoy the easy path of unlocking the bootloader, you must first face the dangerous road of rooting your phone. You will need to have root access in order to use this app. If you need help with rooting, see our guide on how to root the Samsung Galaxy S3 SCH-I535 using a pre-rooted system.img or how to root the Galaxy S3 I535 without Odin.

Launching the app will bring you to its main interface. You will find two buttons: one for unlocking, and another one for locking the bootloader. Your phone’s bootloader unlock status will also be displayed above. Just tap a button and let the app do the rest. You will also find ads sitting nicely below the screen.

The VZW GS3 EZ-Unlock (Bootloader) can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store. If you need a complete walkthrough, see our guide on how to unlock bootloader on the Samsung Galaxy S3 SCH-I535.

Disk Defragmenter

Disk defragmentation is a process that lessens the amount of fragmentation inside a storage device. In layperson’s term, it is a process where files stored inside a mass storage device is arranged and strategically organized into smaller segments of contiguous regions called fragments. This results in improved performance in accessing files and could free some space on your mass storage device. In Linux, you won’t need defragmentation tools since Linux uses a file system that uniquely arranges the files to accommodate increasing file size and avoid gaps in the storage device.

Since Android is based on Linux, you might be wondering where you can use the Disk Defragmenter app. You can use this app to defragment files on your external mass storage formatted to the fragment-prone FAT32 and NTFS file systems.

The app’s main interface shows the storage devices on your Android device. Since your device is Linux-based, you won’t need to defragment the internal storage. A message will also appear, reminding you that your internal storage device doesn’t require disk defragmentation, when you choose your internal device. You will need to tap external storage with file system of FAT32 or NTFS to begin the process.

A progress bar will be displayed. You will also find color legends below to see how much free space is created, the defragmented files, and such.

The Disk Defragmenter app can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store. Since this is a free app, the developer opted for push notification ads to support the app. The app’s interface is also clean and worked well while it defragmented my SD card. Although I cannot determine a change in performance, a lot of users commented that they noticed some performance improvement on their Android device.

Pyramid Run

We at Android Authority surely love to play with the undead. In our quest to look for the best apps, we found ourselves in an ancient pyramid. Indeed, we found great treasures but we also have awakened the undead that protect the ancient pyramid. Grab the treasure and run for your life with the Pyramid Run game on your Android device.

The game follows the same concept as Temple Run. You will need to control a character, steer clear of obstacles, and run as far as you can. You can control your character by swiping and tilting. Swipe towards the direction you want your character to turn. Swipe up to jump and swipe down to slide. You can also tilt your device to avoid obstacles or collect coins along the way.

Along the way, you will go through different running scenes. The speed and the difficulty increases as the game progresses. You can choose 2 characters in the game: the Prince of Persia or the Persian Princess.

Pyramid Run can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store. The app will also come ads supported. Ads will only appear after every run and not during the game. The game features a shop where you can spend collected coins on additional items. But, at the moment, the shop only sells extra lives. It would be good if the shop featured more items such as the power of invulnerability or a coin multiplier.

100 Gates

After escaping the wrath of the undead, we found ourselves trapped inside a haunted mansion. In order to get out, you must open 100 Gates to be free. Opening a gate sounds easy, right? But, this haunted mansion is a special one and you will need to solve unique puzzles to open the gates and break free.

This is a simple puzzle game. All you have to do is figure out the special key in order to unlock the gates. You will need to complete a missing object, shake your phone, paint the lion symbol, or do whatever is necessary to unlock the gate. You can also find clues on each stage that will help you on unlocking the gate. Look at the direction of the knives on the wall, find clues on the numbers displayed on the gates, or the strange colors of the door. To add some spooky effect, you will hear a creepy sound when you open a gate.

The 100 Gates game can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store and comes with ads appearing below the screen. We didn’t find the ads a big distraction while playing the game. The game is also very entertaining and is a perfect way to spend your extra time off. The game’s current version features only 20 levels. More levels will come with future updates.

Brainwaves – T.U.S.: Altering state of consciousness via brainwave entrainment

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 02:00 PM PDT

With how busy our lives have become, it can be difficult to take a moment and just breathe. Stress can be healthy, but too much of it can definitely lead to long-term effects on our health. Some people sign up for calming exercises such as yoga or tai chi while others burn off their stress by hitting the gym and spending a few hours with a punching bag. If you’re one of those people who just can’t find time to do any of those things, don’t be disheartened. As long as you have an Android phone, there’s a way to help you achieve peace of mind and release that stress.

Developed by IMOBLIFE Co. Ltd, Brainwaves – T.U.S is an all-in-one brainwave store. This app gives you access to the Unexplainable Store, one of the largest paranormal stores according to the app’s Google Play Store page. It focuses on brain frequencies research and publishes well-recognized products that range from spiritual and health aspects to brain functions and therapeutic recordings according to these categories:

  • Therapy Recordings
  • Health and Hygiene
  • Spiritual and Metaphysical
  • Money and Prosperity
  • Brain Function
  • Personal Development
  • Adult Subjects

When you first launch the app, you’ll see a player in the middle of the screen and three buttons on the dock below it. The app’s interface is quite clean and you cannot see a single ad marring its look. The player lets you set a timer for how long you’d like the track you’re playing to keep looping. For example, if you’ve set the timer at 30 minutes and you play the 10 minute Calm Down track, then the Calm Down track will loop 3 times until the timer runs out.

Tap on Library and tap All to see all your downloaded files. You can also tap Therapy recordings to check on your files. As a bonus to downloading the app, you get the Relaxation Package for free. Tap on it and you can see its introduction explaining why the recording was made and how it was made. You can play the recording by tapping on the Play tab but you can also read the Manual so you can see tips on how to relax.

Brainwaves – T.U.S isn’t just limited to helping you destress. Tap Store and you can purchase files to help you build on your lucid dreaming, astral projection and chakra opening. You can see all the available recordings by tapping All, discounted recordings by tapping on Specials, and the freshest ones by tapping on New. Each recording has its respective price, star rating, and sometimes its discounted price, listed right below its name. Before you make any purchases, you can tap on the recording’s name and read its introduction, guarantee, and some user testimonials.

Finally, tap Info to learn more about the app, brainwaves, and the developers. If you need some extra convincing, you can read some user Testimonials.

Though the app promises to relax the user, your mileage may vary. Some people may not like the sound of water that takes up most of the first minute of the Calm Down file and continues throughout the rest of the 10 minutes as a backdrop to techno ambient sounds. When I used the app, the steady stream of natural sound became white noise that eventually got me drowsy.

Some snags that really jumped out at me as I browsed the app was if I left the app home screen while a track is playing to check, say, my Library, the track stops playing completely. Though it doesn’t start from the beginning and has merely been paused, it’s a bit of a downer and can easily break one’s concentration. The text for the default package’s Introduction and Manual was also very small and for those of you who have trouble seeing, you’ll be disappointed to know that you can’t pinch to zoom in.

Overall, Brainwaves – T.U.S. appears to be a well-designed app that not only promises to help you relax and destress but also tap into your psychic abilities.  Start relaxing with the Brainwaves – T.U.S app on your Android device today.

Samsung vs Apple: How did Samsung’s Chairman first respond to the verdict?

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 01:33 PM PDT

The Californian Samsung vs Apple trial is over. As everyone likely knows by now, Samsung didn’t exactly get the verdict it was hoping for. And with Samsung owing Apple over $1 billion, according to the verdict, one thing’s certain, Samsung isn’t pleased.

So what happened when Samsung’s Chairman, Lee Kun-Hee, first was briefed over the news regarding the verdict? While we can only guess what was said by him before the briefing, an unnamed Samsung executive has reported the Chairman’s response following the de-briefing.

Exact quoted words here,

“The chairman calmed down and slightly closed his eyes after he was briefed. But he didn’t say anything further.”

What’s next for Samsung? The Korean company has affirmed it will fight the verdict and it’s clear the Apple vs Samsung war is far from over. What matters now is how they move forward.

It’s important that Samsung makes it clear it is focusing on innovative and exciting products that are nothing like what Apple is delivering. IFA made it clear that Sammy is more than capable of delivering great products that are as non-Apple as can be. The Galaxy Note 2 and the Galaxy Camera are two of the strongest examples of this unique innovation.

Last but not least on Samsung’s agenda is a new threat against Apple. If the new iPhone arrives with 4G LTE, Samsung says it is prepared to take Apple to court over the matter. Samsung has about 10% of the patents surrounding 4G LTE and hopes that they can leverage these patents against Apple. That’s if they can make an argument against them being ‘standard’ and falling into FRAND territory.

What do you think Samsung’s focus should be going forward? Fight the good fight against Apple in court? Or instead should they put most of their focus into delivering products that prove to the public that they don’t need to borrow from Apple design?

Looking to mod the Galaxy Note 10.1, as first custom ROMs arrive?

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 01:27 PM PDT

Galaxy Note 10.1 custom ROMs

THe Galaxy Note 10.1 sure has had a lot of customization already, with a root arriving long before the tablet even hit the market. Shortly after, ClockworkMod was ported to Note 10.1, and now the first Galaxy Note 10.1 custom ROMs have begun to surface.

Looking to get your mod on with the Galaxy Note 10.1? XDA Developers forum has some of the first custom ROMs already. There are three different builds, each with its own different features and appeal.

First up, we have zedomax‘s "TrainWreck", a ROM designed around the European XXALG5 firmware. This ROM is all about keeping up with the stock look, and that means all the TouchWiz experience and features are still in place.

Looking to get rid of Samsung bloatware? CleanROM by safariking might be perfect for you. This ROM is all about shedding bloat and giving the cleanest Samsung-free experience possible. This build is also based on the European firmware.

Last, we have the DR.AKRIM_ROM by hani1980, which makes use of the Indian N8000DDALH1 firmware. The purpose of this build is to add RTL Arabic support and Samsung Arabic keyboard. All the ROMs also have been deodexed and zip-aligned, alongside other individual tweaks.

When it comes to custom ROMs, XDA is almost always the best resource. Any of these Galaxy Note 10.1 custom ROMs interest you?

Motorola map ad patent in the works

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 01:21 PM PDT

Motorola map ad patent

Advertising is everywhere. That’s a 21st century reality. It follows you aboard public transportation, as you walk around town, even on your computer and smartphone. There’s few places left sacred enough to go ad-free.

With that in mind, it’s really not much of a surprise that Motorola, and Google through proxy, as working on getting a Motorola map ad patent. What does this mean for navigation and mapping apps exactly?

The idea is that you would have small pop-ups throughout Google Maps, though its not clear how this would work exactly. The idea of ads plastering your phone while you are trying to find your way around might be a little distracting.

Maybe just when you are searching for new locations, or entering in directions? Not during the actual navigation process itself? It’s hard to say, but more than likely Motorola and Google are smart enough to make them unobtrusive and non-distracting so they don’t become a driving hazard.

Does the idea of apps like Google’s Navigation getting advertisements bother you? Or is it just the price we pay for free and convenient apps these days?

Grooveshark for Android: Back after over a year’s absence (update)

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 01:17 PM PDT

Grooveshark for Android

Almost a year and a half ago, the Grooveshark app for Android was removed from the Google Play Store. While Google doesn’t remove apps nearly as much as Apple does – it happens when they have good reasons.

So why did they remove the app? Grooveshark’s parent, Escape Media, has been tangled up in a legal war for quite some time now, with accusations from three of the four major record label groups. Grooveshark previously allowed anyone to upload music for listening pleasure, without any regulation or license for the music played.

While Escape Media has stuck by the claim that they will work to respond to take down notices for any infringing content, Google decided to remove the app in order to prevent itself from getting caught up in the lawsuit drama.

Recently though, Grooveshark for Android has come back to Google Play. What changed Google’s minds? A recent decision in a New York suite that pitted Universal Music against Escape Media. Universal claimed that the safe harbor provisions in the DMCA didn't apply to recordings before 1972, but the judge didn’t agree with the argument.

This is just the first of many legal entanglements ahead for Grooveshark, but the victory was enough to give Google the confidence to reinstate the Google for Android app. For iOS users though, Grooveshark remains pulled from the AppStore.

UPDATE: Man, that was short-lived. Google has yet to give official reason for why, but it seems they’ve changed their minds and removed the app from Google Play once again.

Google Now gets even better, adds public service announcements and more

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 01:11 PM PDT

Google Now

Google Now might be in its infancy, but it’s still a really useful part of Google Search. Now, it’s getting even better with a new update available in the Google Play store.

Jelly Bean users will get a few cool new functions added to the Google Now experience. One of these changes has to do with movie showtimes. Google Now will populate information on the movie that you search for, such as where it’s playing and at what times – it can even send you alerts if you are near a specific theater.

Another similar feature comes to sports, you can now manually select your favorite sports team and a card will be updated with information about the team, updating in real-time.

Last but not least, Google Now is getting very useful public service alert capabilities. Snow coming to your area? Perhaps a tropical storm? Google Now will gather information that could affect the area in which you live, giving you updates and alerts as they develop.

Clearly, Google Now isn’t just a Siri clone, it’s a whole lot more. Beyond searching, Google Now is truly smart and gathers the information we need now, without much user intervention required. While Jelly Bean has many great features, this is probably the most compelling reason to upgrade to the latest Android OS.

If you are really wanting to get your hands on Google Now and don’t have a device that currently supports Jelly Bean, officially or through a ROM, there are ways to unlock it in Android ICS.

Do you have Jelly Bean installed already, or do you have a hack in place that brings Google Now to an earlier version of Android? What do you think of Google Now?
