Behind the Curtain: An interview with iSign Media

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 12:47 PM PDT

Time for another round of good ol’ fashioned peeking behind the curtain. Sometimes we like to give you guys an inside look at what happens within a developer or service provider. Once in a while, though, we like to learn a bit about where things might be headed in terms of how we use our devices. Such is the case with our latest interview, Alex Romanov of iSign Media. These guys are on the front of a new way of advertising and mobile shopping that we think you’ll appreciate. That said, we don’t want to spoil anything.

Thanks for taking the time to speak with us!  Please, introduce yourself and briefly describe iSIGN Media

I'm Alex Romanov, Chief Executive Officer at iSIGN Media. I've been a serial entrepreneur over
the years – I have a knack for spotting growth opportunities and capitalizing on them, mainly
in the consumer electronics, communication, digital imaging, e-commerce and video gaming
space. I was CEO and President of Alpine Electronics for 15 years and a major shareholder at
Royal Oak Marketing. I was also a co-founder of Spherex Inc., which developed and sold an
Xbox gaming audio system. I've been with iSIGN since 2007.

We enable retailers to provide messages, discounts and coupons while customers are in the store.
iSIGN provides a unique multiplatform advertising solution using BluetoothTM, mobile, WiFi and
location-aware technologies. We help retailers deliver rich media, permission-based messages
to consumers. Our proximity marketing solution benefits consumers by delivering relevant offers
and helps merchants by driving huge marketing ROI and providing valuable consumer insights.

Alright, sounds interesting, but how would you pitch yourself to an Android user?

As users of a sophisticated smartphone platform like Android know, the line between physical
and digital experiences is becoming blurred. People use their Android devices to stay in touch,
stay entertained and stay up to date. They also use them to find products and services they
need. iSIGN can help with that because we enable retailers to provide messages, discounts and
coupons while customers are in the store. It costs the customer absolutely nothing, and their
privacy is 100% assured.

Are we talking about ads and offers pushed to users within a specific vicinity?

That's how it works: iSIGN's in-store digital signs detect Bluetooth signals and send a message
that Android users can either accept or decline. Either way, no names or phone numbers are
ever collected, and the customer isn't charged for a message. Instead, they can choose to
receive an free offer to make a purchase and save money on a product they may have come in
to the location to purchase anyway.

Is it text-based only or might these be interactive, video, etc?

iSIGN supports rich media, so the message is whatever the merchant wants it to be – a digital
coupon, an interactive game or a video.

Do consumers need to worry about data or privacy?

Since iSIGN uses Bluetooth, the only information that is detected is the hardware signature on
the device. It's very important to us to protect customer privacy 100%. We never collect or store
sensitive data.

Are there any specific companies using the service now that we might recognize?

Mac's Convenience Stores – Canada's largest chain and the second-largest convenience store
chain in North America – is rolling out a proximity marketing strategy using iSIGN technology. It
has been extremely successful so far. iSIGN is the largest owner and operator of in-store digital
media in Canada with 5,600 digital signs in 1,400 locations, and we're growing quickly.

How are you getting the word out? Who are you talking with?

Mac's has been a great partner and have supported us with an ad campaign in-store where the
technology is in front of shoppers. We have Canadian gold medalist, Ashleigh McIvor as our
sponsor and PR has been a tool which we've utilized quite a bit to speak to the business side
and as more stores go live, the consumer side as well.

How do consumers tend to respond to this sort of advertising?

Consumers have responded very positively. People who are in close proximity to an item
tend to have a high response rate to relevant offers. Unlike other digital marketing strategies,
proximity marketing doesn't reach out to customers randomly; customers who receive our
messages have already showed an interest in the merchant by coming to the location, and they
choose whether or not to view the message. When our transmitters were rolled out at Mac's
locations in Toronto, we didn't receive a single complaint.

Has anything in Bluetooth technology changed over time that impacts your service?  In other words, was this not possible before?

Today unlike 4 years ago Bluetooth range has gone from 30 feet to 300 and iSIGN has made it possible to adjust the range from as little as 1 foot to 300 feet. Bluetooth is capable of rich media such as music, videos as well as SMS text and able to be interactive with devices to capture. Logs all metrics and responses to offers and messaging all in set proximity making all messaging relevant and free to recipient.

Are there any places where we might see this in the United States today?

Currently operational in the city of Safety Harbour Florida and in Marathon convenience stores and gas bars in the Fort Wayne Indiana.

Great stuff, can’t wait to see this in our neck of the woods.  Let’s assume a company or retail is reading this, how would they get in touch with you to learn more?

I can be reached at Alex@isignmedia.com and call 416 407 1035.

Thanks again for everything, we certainly appreciate your time!

Cricket Huawei Mercury Ice launching on September 5th

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 12:06 PM PDT

US super-regional carrier Cricket Wireless is planning to launch the Huawei Mercury Ice on September 5 through RadioShack. Actually, this device is a redesigned version of the Huawei Mercury, but it comes with a different name this time. Though the only new thing is that the device is now available in a sexy pearl white color as well, but everything else is still same under the hood.

Also, it’s still running on Gingerbread, which is a bit of a disappointment. It will cost $149.99 without any contract, so still it’s not a bad choice if you are looking for a device with decent specs and a cheap price tag. Are you planning to get one? Tell us about it in the comment box below.

Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy Stellar looks good for September 6 debut

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 12:00 PM PDT

Things look to be in order for a September 6 debut for Verizon’s next, next Android.  You know, the one after Motorola’s Droid Razr M 4G LTE
– the Samsung Galaxy Stellar. Engadget tells us today that the handset does, in fact, run Android 4.0 and feature a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, an 800×480 display, 4GB storage, 3.2-megapixel camera, and front-facing VGA 1.3-megapixel camera.  Not a lot of phone, but not a bad price at $100 either.

If the September 6 is the actual debut of the Galaxy Stellar then we should expect an announcement in the next couple of days.  That is assuming Verizon doesn’t want to sneak this in under the radar.

AT&T branded Pantech Magnus 4G leaked, looks fantastic

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 10:50 AM PDT

Pantech is in the mobile market from a long time now but they never made an impact on the US mobile market, but now it looks like Pantech is about to come out with something to make an impact, and we heard about it first time a few days ago.

Pantech Magnus 4G LTE is the device we are talking about, and you can see the first leaked shot of it above. The meaning of “Magnus” is “great”, and it looks like AT&T and Pantech are also going for the same thing. It will be running on Ice Cream Sandwich or may be on Jelly Bean, featuring 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor we saw on the mighty Galaxy S III, and it will also have 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, 1.3 VGA camera with  an 8 megapixel camera on the back  with LED flash, and AT&T 4G LTE connectivity.

According to previous information, it’s featuring a 720p display, and we are still not sure about the screen size, but it seems it’s around 4.5 or 4.3 inches. Anyway, we hope that AT&T will come out with this device in coming days or so. Are you planning to pick this from AT&T? Tell us about it in the comment box below.

Sprint TV spots dig at rival’s shared data plans

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 10:25 AM PDT

Sprint, no fan of shared data plans, has started airing commercials which poke at the idea of pooling data together for families.  OK, maybe not so much at the plans, but more how one determines who gets the bulk of the bucket.  Seems like it could be maddening, no? The video, embedded below, is what we imagine will be the first of similar TV spots.

Details surface for Galaxy S III Mini, Galaxy S II Plus, Galaxy Premier

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 07:52 AM PDT

If you thought Samsung was going to sit back and get comfortable with the releases of the Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S III  you were wrong.  New details have emerged for no less than three upcoming Samsung models which could hit markets in the coming months. Looks like it is time to start tracking a Galaxy S III Mini, Galaxy S II Plus, and a Galaxy Premier.

According to SamMobile, the Galaxy S III Mini is planned for release in 2012 and will offer consumers a 5-megapixel camera, dual-core processor, and a 4.0-inch SuperAMOLED display.  Designed to compete with the iPhone 5, this model is rumored to retail for 250 euro while Apple’s flagship may fetch 650 euros.

The Samsung Galaxy S II Plus is said to come with a 4.3-inch SuperAMOLED Plus display, a 1GHz single-core processor, an 8-megapixel camera, and come in 16GB and 32GB capacities.  The handset should run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, feature a microSD slot, and come in blue and grey color options.  Strange stuff if you ask us, what with the single-core processor instead of the dual-core stuff.

As for the Galaxy Premier, SamMobile tells us that the model number is GT-i9260 and that it will be largely identical to the Galaxy S II Plus save for a larger 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED display, and an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean experience.

Considering all we know at this point, it’s a bit premature to start talking carriers and U.S. availability.  That said, is there anything above that excites you?

New images of Kindle Fire successor show Skype support

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 07:00 AM PDT

The fellas over at The Verge have published a couple more photos of the presumed Kindle Fire 2, one of which shows Skype video calling.  We noticed the camera in the last leaked photo and expected the ability to take photos at a minimum.  Here, the Skype integration just tickles us because it adds another layer of functionality to the device.  We also get a first look at the UI of the next Kindle Fire which appears to be more streamlined than its predecessor.

It’s not quite clear whether these images are of a 7-inch or 10-inch model but The Verge’s Chris Ziegler suggests it may be the latter.  Further, we don’t know if they are the same model, finished designs, or just some mockups for use inside Amazon.  All should be revealed in a few days.

Perhaps the stuff that gets us most excited about the new Kindle Fire is that we expect a competitively priced and feature-rich experience for consumers.  If it just happens to apply a little pressure on the Nexus 7 and other Android tablets, so be it!

Amazon brags Appstore growth ahead of new Kindle Fire

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 06:26 AM PDT

Amazon, proud of its Kindle Fire and Appstore, has issued a press release touting some of it successes from the last year or so. As many of you know, Amazon is set to debut a new Kindle Fire at an event on September 6. As various pieces fall into place, Amazon wants everyone to know just how profitable and powerful its products and services have become.

According to Amazon, the number of developers building apps for the Appstore has more than doubled since last November. What’s more, apps designed for the Kindle Fire customers has tripled. Developers are also making plenty of bank, thanks to in-app purchases that generate, on average, more than double paid app transactions.

We’re super-stoked about what might be waiting for us just a few days from now, how about you?

Amazon Appstore Drives Monetization for Developers

SEATTLE–(BUSINESS WIRE)–(NASDAQ: AMZN) – Amazon.com, Inc. today announced that since Kindle Fire was introduced less than a year ago, customers have downloaded hundreds of millions of apps and games from the Amazon Appstore, and the number of developers building apps for Amazon Appstore continues to grow quickly. This growth is being driven by strong monetization from Amazon's large customer base and industry-leading e-commerce features like 1-Click purchasing and In-App Purchasing (IAP). This accelerating developer growth is also attributable to Amazon continuing to release services that make life easier for developers building mobile apps and games.

"Amazon's platform is a complete end-to-end solution for developers wanting to build, market and monetize their apps and games," said Paul Ryder, Vice President of Apps and Games at Amazon.

"Developers can build their apps and games using Amazon Web Services' industry-leading infrastructure platform. For important audience engagement features like leaderboards, achievements, and syncing game state between devices, developers can use Amazon's new GameCircle services. To gain exposure to tens of millions of customers, developers can list their apps in the Amazon Appstore and take advantage of awareness-building programs like Free App of the Day. And, to monetize their apps and games, customers can use Amazon's industry-leading e-commerce and payment capabilities like In-App Purchasing and Subscriptions."

More and more, developers are finding that In-App Purchasing is instrumental in monetizing their apps, more so than just charging for access to the app itself. In fact, the average In-App Purchasing transaction generates more than twice the revenue of the average paid app transaction. And, developers are finding that Amazon Appstore's In-App Purchasing capability has significant advantages relative to others.

"We are big fans of Amazon Appstore and have seen tremendous growth in our business since we started releasing our apps on the Amazon platform," said Suli Ali, CEO of TinyCo. "We have been extremely successful with Amazon's In-App Purchasing. It was easy to implement, and we have generated significantly more revenue per customer than with any other platform. Since we have had such success with Amazon, when GameCircle was introduced, it was a no-brainer, we added it to our apps right away."

"We aim to delight women with our engaging 3D lifestyle games, and Kindle Fire is a perfect match for our debut app Style Me Girl. Because of Amazon's IAP solution, our apps monetize 50% better than they do on other platforms we're on, in turn, helping us scale our business quickly," said Simon Newstead, CEO & Co-Founder of Frenzoo.

"Storm8 was one of the first game developers on the Kindle Fire, and we've had a consistently great experience," said Perry Tam, CEO & Co-Founder at Storm8. "The development process couldn't be easier, and Amazon's team is quick to respond if we have any questions. We're especially happy with the results we're seeing from Amazon's In-App Purchasing. Storm8 will definitely bring more games to the Kindle Fire in the near future."

"Working with Amazon has been fantastic," said Michael Dawson, Head of Strategy and Business Development at Pocket Gems. "Fans have embraced our games in the Amazon Appstore and played more than 16 million sessions to date. Commercially, our games have been extremely successful thanks in part to Amazon's well-integrated In-App Purchasing which has helped us generate additional revenue."

"At Glu we've always been an early adopter of Amazon services for both building and selling our mobile games. For example, Frontline Commando was one of the first games on the Amazon Appstore to offer IAP and subscriptions. This game also leverages Amazon's S3 and Sync services," said Niccolo de Masi, Chief Executive Officer of Glu Mobile. "Amazon offers us exposure to its large customer base and we will continue to use the Amazon platform in our efforts to grow our business."

The Amazon Appstore is adding popular games and apps every day, with hundreds of best-selling apps added since the Kindle Fire launch. Recently added bestsellers include Hulu Plus, HBO GO, iHeartRadio, Disney's Where's My Water? and Where's My Perry?, WebMD, USA Today, BBC News, ABC News, Spotify, Songza, Bejeweled 2 and more.

"We recently launched the ABC News App for Kindle Fire and were thrilled to see tens of thousands of downloads in just under a month," said Doug Vance, VP of Product Strategy for ABC News. "Amazon provides visibility to a very large customer base which is great for our app and our growing ABC News audience."

"The growth and success of Kindle Fire made it an obvious choice for Spotify to deliver an app that would be seamlessly integrated into the overall Kindle Fire experience," said Michael Abbattista, Business Development, Spotify. "Fans can now download the app for Kindle Fire and immediately start listening to music on Spotify's free mobile radio feature – the response has been incredibly positive."
