For the few that purchased the HTC One Google Play edition (seriously, did any of you?), you might be happy to know that Android 4.3 is on its way. While we don’t have an exact timing on its release, we know HTC is hard at work on it after posting the Android 4.3 kernel source [...]

Google Play edition HTC One Android 4.3 kernel source released

Google Play HTC One

Kernel source published — but no update for devices just yet

HTC has released the kernel source code and related platform support files for the Google Play edition HTC One through its HTCDev portal. The code drop comes ahead of the Google Play HTC One's Android 4.3 update — officially, the phone's still on 4.2.2, and we've not seen an updates on our own devices just yet.

The kernel source code is for software version 3.06.1700.10 (up from 2.14.1700.15) and Linux kernel version 3.4.10 (unchanged from the 4.2 firmware.)

We've checked Samsung's open source release center and there's 4.3 code on there just yet, so it looks like HTC's first out the gate with its 4.3 code release. In any case, hopefully this means the 4.3 update for Google Play edition phones is just around the corner. In any case, we'll let you know as soon as the updates start rolling out.

Verizon now offering 500MB Share Everything option for $40 per month
Aug 2nd 2013, 18:04, by Scott Webster

verizon_720ag

Verizon has a new Share Everything plan for customers who need very little data each month. As the headline already tells you, customers get 500MB per month at $40 per month. Yes it’s a low amount of data and yes, it’s a lot of money per megabyte. For $10 more per month you’ll double the data; another $10 and it’s quadrupled. Nevertheless, it’s now the cheapest option for customers at Verizon.

AT&T recently rolled out a 300MB plan for only $20 per month, much more practical for the money. Perhaps this is why Verizon didn’t trumpet the arrival of the new rate plan. Really, who’s going to share 500MB among multiple devices?

Android Device Manager coming this month; locate and protect your lost Android phone
Aug 2nd 2013, 17:52, by Jerry Hildenbrand

Android Device Manager

Google to offer an official lost phone locator and security application for devices running Android 2.2 or higher

There are plenty of tools and software packages out there that will monitor your Android phone and help locate it in the event that it's lost, but until now we've not heard of any official solution from Google themselves. That's about to change according to the official Android blog, as the Android Device Manager is set to launch later this month.

Built for devices running Android 2.2 or above (that'd be about all of them) Android Device Manager is said to have tools to help you locate a missing phone by sounding the ringer at max volume, tracking its location if it's out of earshot, and a quick and easy way to remotely wipe your personal data off the device if you're not able to recover it.

Many of us have been using some of the great third party tools for this for a while now, but we're still excited to see an official offering. We'll have a good look when it becomes official.

Yahoo! acquires Rockmelt, no word on what the changes may mean for the Android app

Rockmelt

Yahoo! and Rockmelt have big things planned for the ways they deliver media content

Yahoo! has announced that they are purchasing Rockmelt, makers of a once popular desktop browser and current Android and iOS applications. We had a look at the Rockmelt app for Android upon it's release, and found it an interesting and well-made way to find the great content the web has to offer in a highly-tuned mobile package.

Yahoo! and Rockmelt share a common goal to help people discover the best content from around the web. We plan to integrate the Rockmelt technology into Yahoo!’s experiences, and the Rockmelt team will help us to reimagine how we deliver our media content in new and exciting ways.

The excellent job Rockmelt did with the mobile app for Android wasn't enough to make up for the sting of dropping the desktop offering for some folks, so we hope that today's news means great things for all involved -- especially the users. We'll know more as things progress.

Samsung Galaxy Mega (6.3) video walkthrough
Aug 2nd 2013, 17:31, by Alex Dobie

There are smartphones, and then there’s the Megaphone

In case you’d neglected to notice, smartphones are getting bigger, and in 2013 in particular we’ve seen manufacturers push past the six-inch screen mark and into the bizarre no man’s land between phones and tablets.

The Samsung Galaxy Mega is one such device, with a titanic 6.3-inch display. On the face of things, it’s essentially an oversized Galaxy S4, in the same way the S4 Mini is an undersized Galaxy S4. But there’s more to it than that, and the result of Samsung’s efforts is a product that’s closer to a highly portable mid-range tablet than a smartphone. (Though it’s perfectly capable of making calls, should you desire to do so.)

Check out our video walkthrough above, and be sure to share your own thoughts on this 6.3-inch megaphone down in the comments.

Android World Update # Find your lost phone with Android Device Manager

Official Android Blog
News and notes from the Android team.
thumbnail Find your lost phone with Android Device Manager
Aug 2nd 2013, 17:15, by Unknown

Have you ever lost your phone in between the couch cushions or forgot it in a restaurant? Or maybe searching for your phone before you rush out the door is part of your morning routine? Later this month, the new Android Device Manager can help you out. It's one of a few simple features you can use to keep your device—and the data you store inside—safe and secure.

Locate and ring your misplaced device
If you ended up dropping your phone between those couch cushions, Android Device Manager lets you quickly ring your phone at maximum volume so you can find it, even it's been silenced. And in the event that your phone or tablet is out of earshot (say, at that restaurant you left it at last night), you can locate it on a map in real time.

Protecting your personal information and data
While losing your phone can be stressful, Android Device Manager can help you keep your data from ending up in the wrong hands. If your phone can't be recovered, or has been stolen, you can quickly and securely erase all of the data on your device.

Availability and getting started
This service will be available later this month on devices running Android 2.2 or above; to use it, you also will need to be signed into your Google Account. There will also be an Android app to allow you to easily find and manage your devices. Stay tuned!
