T-Mobile will not stock Moto X in stores

moto_x_pinksWhile T-Mobile does plan to offer support for the Moto X smartphone, you won’t find one in the retail stores around the country. Speaking with AllThingsD, T-Mobile’s Chief Marketing Officer Mike Sievert said that the device will not be “immediately” offered in stores.

"We do not plan to stock Moto X devices immediately in our stores but are working closely with Motorola to make the Moto X a great experience for T-Mobile customers. Any news about distribution in our stores would come at a later date. The Moto X optimized for T-Mobile's 4G LTE network will initially be available through Motorola's channels.” – T-Mobile CMO Mike Sievert

There could be a number of reasons that factor into T-Mobile’s decision not to stock the phone in stores. One of the more likely causes is that T-Mobile has done away with subsidy; AT&T’s version cost $575 (16GB) with the 32GB model listed at $629. Customers who shop on price and specs will see the difference between the Moto X and the HTC One or Samsung Galaxy S4.

Maybe T-Mobile wants to wait things out and see what sort of demand there is before committing to too many units for retail. Maybe they wanna wait until AT&T drops the exclusive rights to custom colors and designs. Maybe they just aren’t ready to shoot out a press release. Whatever the case, it’s going to be like buying a Nexus One over the next few months. Yes, you can get the phone and run it through T-Mobile but you’ll have to do a little legwork.
