Sideload the Nexus 5 version of Google Wallet to get tap-and-pay on your 2013 Nexus 7
Nov 14th 2013, 18:19, by Quentyn Kennemer

Want to use tap-and-pay with Google Wallet on your Nexus 7 2013? As ridiculous as that would look, you might be happy to learn that there’s a way you can do just that. You can take the APK of the Nexus 5 version of Google Wallet (which is different than the version currently available in the Google Play Store for other devices) and sideload it onto your Nexus 7 2013.

Install that APK like normal (make sure you enable installs from non-trusted sources) and you should be good to go. You’ll now find Google Wallet as an option under the tap-and-pay menu under settings. Give it a try the next time you find yourself in position to use it (which, again, might just look downright ridiculous to any passersby).

Republic Wireless now selling $299 Moto X without contract
Nov 14th 2013, 17:48, by Scott Webster

Republic Wireless has become the latest carrier to offer support for the Moto X smartphone. Unlike with other wireless providers, this particular model is unlocked and contract-free…and very affordable.

It's finally here… Moto X with four new plans to choose from and the ability to switch plans up to twice per month…Now you can get your new Moto X with Republic's Hybrid Calling technology, with two plans that cost $10/mo or less…still with no contract, no hidden fees and no surprises.

Priced at $299, the Moto X is the same exact handset you’ll find elsewhere. The chief difference comes in the network that backs the device.  Employing Wi-Fi networks first, it falls back on Sprint’s 3G or 4G LTE when needed. Indeed, this is for data, SMS, emails, and even voice calls! Thanks to a custom ROM tucked inside the phone, however, the Moto X works only with Republic Wireless’s plans.

Customers can pair the Moto X with a number of Republic Wireless plans which range from as low as $5 per month up to $40 per month.

  • $5/month - Unlimited talk, text, and data on Wi-Fi only
  • $10/month - Unlimited talk and text on Sprint cellular, unlimited data on Wi-Fi only
  • $25/month - Unlimited talk, text, and data on Wi-Fi and Sprint 3G
  • $40/month - Unlimited talk, text, and data on Wi-Fi and Sprint 4G LTE (where applicable)

ISIS Mobile Wallet now available for Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile customers
Nov 14th 2013, 18:14, by Andrew Martonik

Service requires compatible phone, enhanced SIM, ISIS app and participating store

ISIS Mobile Wallet, a competing service to Google Wallet backed by three major carriers, has finally made its official launch in the U.S. Customers with compatible phones and specific SIM cards on Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile can now download the ISIS Mobile Wallet app and get started with mobile payments.

At a time when Google Wallet is pushing away from needing any specific carrier or even a secure element in the phone, ISIS requires quite a few hoops to get started. First up you'll need to be on one of the three aforementioned carriers, and that's it. Next, you'll need a compatible phone, which in every case is a subset of carrier-branded phones currently offered. You'll also need a so-called "enhanced SIM," which carries a secure element required for the transacation. Lastly, you'll need the specific ISIS Mobile Wallet app for your carrier — although they look identical, Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile each have their own app in Google Play:

ISIS has also partnered with a specific set of banks (now sans Capital One) that give the best experience with the payment processor, but luckily you can also add any back account manually if you'd prefer. And once you're set up and ready to pay, you'll have to go to a retailer that has signed on with ISIS to have the proper terminal ready as well. ISIS provides a map to look up retailers, and in our area it looks like its basically limited to carrier stores (of course), some drug stores and random merchants we've never heard of.

If you're interested in giving ISIS a try, hit the break for a full list of compatible devices on each carrier.

Samsung looks to increase market share two-fold in Africa in coming year
Nov 14th 2013, 18:11, by Harrison Kaminsky

It’s no secret that Samsung’s meteoric rise in the smartphone industry is still continuing today. Surprisingly, there’s even more that the company can be doing to keep its success going.

By the end of this year, Samsung expects that half of the smartphones sold in Africa over the course of 2013 will be Samsung-branded, and hopes to double these sales in Africa in 2014.

It’s the perfect demographic— Africa’s growing tech savvy and urbanized growing young population is growing, and foreign manufacturers are swarming.

Of the total 100 million mobile phones solid in Africa this year, about 20% are smartphones, and half of those are Samsung-made. Samsung has its work cut out for it, and it’ll be interesting to see what it can do.

Motorola Moto G FM Radio app added to Google Play

When buyers get their hands on the new Moto G smartphone, they will discover several of their stock apps are available through Google Play in the same manner as some Moto X apps. One of those apps is the FM Radio app sporting a simple swipe-based navigation system. The app lets users tune in to FM radio stations, using a wired headset as the antenna, as well as build a list of favorites, scan for stations, and get information about what is playing. It appears the app will only work on the Moto G, so it is unlikely anyone would need it at this point. If you want to check out it, we have provided some screenshots and download links after the break.
