T-Mobile outs Nexus 4 OTA, says security fixes coming today
Aug 20th 2013, 18:25, by Jerry Hildenbrand

Nexus 4

JWR66Y update said to contain security fixes, checks in at 1.8MB

While it isn't the bug-fix 4.3.1 update many are wanting (welcome to the world of owning a Nexus!), T-Mobile has put up an information sheet about the JWR66Y update that they say was released today (August 20th).

We've heard rumor of a small OTA for the Nexus 4 that would be coming very soon, so we're not completely surprised, but seeing confirmation from T-Mobile -- who carries the Nexus 4 in stores and online -- is always a good thing.

The update itself is said to be about 1.8MB in size, and should deliver some unknown security fixes. There is no word on the update for other devices (though I've heard all current Nexus devices should get it) or Google Play editions, but we imagine that when security is involved Google will push things as best they can.

Anyone out there seeing the update today? If so, holler out in the comments and let us know.

Google Glass won't be available to the public until 2014
Aug 20th 2013, 18:17, by Aditya Thawardas

google_glass_made_in_the_usaWhile Google Glass has been available to developers since April, the general public is still patiently waiting to get their hands on the device. While we’ve been hearing of a possible late-2013 release, a new report shuts that rumor down. A Google spokesperson told ComputerWorld that the new “ship date” for Google Glass will not be until 2014.

This means that Google and other developers will have a little while longer to perfect the Glass experience. It won’t be available for the holiday season, but perhaps we’ll see it around the time of next year’s I/O which is typically held in May. The latest rumors say that Google Glass will cost around $300.

Todoist 2.0 for Android released to Google Play Store
Aug 20th 2013, 16:30, by Jeff Causey

Todoist

Task management app Todoist received what is described as a major update today for the Android app, taking it up to version 2.0. According to developer Doist, the new version was “rethought, redesigned and recreated!” There are some new designs incorporated into the app, bringing it even more inline with the Holo design guidelines. This is especially true for the slide-out menu from the left, but even the main screen sees some refinement. One thing regular users will notice is the menu of actions when tapping on a task now shows up at the bottom of the screen inside of just below the task. Clicking on the menu option provides a new choice – “Add sub-task” which will be a welcome addition for those building a hierarchy of to-do items.

The notes connected to a task also appear differently, taking up the entire screen. If you have multiple notes, you can just swipe left or right to access them. The task input screen has been simplified, initially displaying just the task description, “project” and due date fields, though others are available via a downward swipe on a “more” button. Todoist also incorporates tabs along the top when creating a task for the addition of notes or reminders when creating the task. Those last two options are new as previously one had to create the task first, then go back and add notes or reminders. Todoist does give users the option to turn off the tabs or display all fields instead of the new abbreviated version.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra pays another visit to the FCC, this time with LTE
Aug 20th 2013, 16:49, by Jeff Causey

Sony_Xperia_Z_Ultra

The last time the Sony Xperia Z Ultra passed through the FCC it was on the same day as Sony’s official announcement about the new device. That was back in June and at the time, there was no information in the FCC filings about LTE bands. That has changed as the device resurfaced yesterday at the FCC, this time with documentation showing the presence of HSPA+ and LTE bands that would be compatible with T-Mobile, AT&T or carriers in the Canadian market. Whether those carriers actually add it to their portfolio of available devices remains to be seen, but it does look promising for the device to be available somewhere in the North American markets.

How to change your Google Now home and work locations
Aug 20th 2013, 17:32, by Aditya Thawardas

google_now_trafficGoogle Now has some pretty neat cards, and one of my favorites is how it automatically gives you directions and traffic info for your commute once it detects (…or tries to detect) your home and work locations. Waiting for Google to detect your places can take a while though, and it can be particularly frustrating when you move or change jobs, and Google Now instead thinks you are trying to get to your old locations.

Fortunately, with the new Google Maps update it became a little easier to manually change your home and work locations for Google Now. Jump through the break to find out how.
1. Open Google Maps and tap the button in the bottom left to open the navigational drawer.maps_navigation

2. Tap “Settings.”maps_sidebar

3. Tap “Edit home or work.”edit_home_or_work_settings

4. Select “Edit home address” and/or “Edit work addressedit_home_work

5. Type in your new address, and select it below the text box when you’re done.type_address

If you prefer, you can also set your home and work locations from your desktop browser using the steps below.

1. Head to Google Maps in your browser (make sure you are logged into your Gmail account).google_maps

2. Click the gear icon in the top right, and select “My Places.”my_places_option

3. Here you see the options to set your home and work location. Click on the option you want to add or edit, and type in your address.Set_location

4. Click save, and you’re good to go!Save_location

It’ll probably take a few minutes for the new info to show up in a card on Google Now, but once it syncs up, your phone will tell you valuable information like when you should leave for work, how long your commute home will take, and if there’s any traffic on the way.

Samsung flexible display tech set to hit the market this November
Aug 20th 2013, 18:03, by Cory Gunther

After having a few setbacks and being delayed back in April we’re now hearing the folks from Samsung are on track to release a product, or two, with their flexible display technology later this year. Devices such as smartphones, or the rumored Galaxy Gear smartwatch could all feature this next-gen technology.

We’ve been following Samsung’s flexible AMOLED displays ever since it was first demoed at CES a few years back. They renamed the company YOUM, and we’ve been waiting for Samsung to bring it to market for some time. It was on display for demos at CES this year, and hopefully the company will launch their first consumer product soon.

According to ETNews the flexible display technology from Samsung will be arriving this year, and be in commercial products starting in November. The report also states LG is hard at work aiming for the same time frame, so Samsung might have some competition later this year. ETNews goes on to mention Samsung being prepared to ship roughly 1.5 million flexible display devices ranging from small, to upwards of 5 and 6-inch displays.

samsung_youm_flexible_amoled-copy-580x382-540x355

No, we won’t be seeing a flexible display in the Samsung Galaxy Note III. Once they iron out all the bugs and get yields higher for the process of allowing the screen to flex, yet still be durable, we could see it in flagship devices, but not yet. The Galaxy S5 maybe, but that’s probably still a bit of a stretch.

It’s possibly still that Samsung’s upcoming smartwatch could rock their new flexible display, but for now we’re going to have to wait and see. Next year should be extremely exciting on this front.

Nexus 4 software update JWR66Y detailed by T-Mobile
Aug 20th 2013, 17:26, by Robert Nelson

It looks like those carrying a Nexus 4 will soon be getting a new software update. This one has been detailed by T-Mobile and looks like it will be arriving as software version JWR66Y. Take note of that trailing Y though because the rest of the software version number looks rather similar to the previous version — JWR66V.

nexus_hero2-540x3584

The JWR66V update was the one that brought Android 4.3. This latest update isn’t quite as exciting however it is one that we suspect Nexus 4 users will be happy to get. The update is security related. In fact, that is just about all that is coming with software version JWR66Y.

The T-Mobile changelog notes the improvements as being “security” related and that is all. That aside, the update is available as of today and looks to be rather small in size — just 1.8MB. As we often see coming from T-Mobile, they make sure to point out that you should have an un-rooted device with at least 50 percent battery life before beginning the update process.

Bottom line here, this is a small update that likely just brings a few fixes. Of course, we are thankful that T-Mobile posted these details if for no other reason than it will keep users from speculating and wondering about what was included. Those with a Nexus 4 in hand can navigate to Menu -> Settings -> About device -> Software update to get the process started.

Chromecast availability on Google Play returns, shipping in 2 weeks
Aug 20th 2013, 16:54, by Cory Gunther

When Google first announced their new Chromecast media streaming device about a month ago, they apparently didn’t expect the device to be in such demand. After selling out almost instantly and being wiped from Best Buy shelves in a matter of hours, the device has been hard to find. However, this afternoon the Play Store stock and availability appears to be stabilizing.

IMG_701221

After the first few days of being available the Chromecast was quickly removed from the Google Play Store, then later that week it returned with 2-3 week shipping delays, which then turned into 3-4 weeks. So basically you could order, but probably wouldn’t get it for an entire month.

Then there’s Amazon, who stated orders would be arriving in mid to late October, then retracted that statement and reported that most should ship within a few weeks. Basically, the device has been selling like hot cakes and no one can keep enough in stock.

Well, this morning the Play Store appears to finally have additional stock, as Google’s changed the shipping date from nearly a month to just a few weeks with all orders shipping by September 3rd. For those eager buyers that don’t want to fork over the extra cash on eBay, we’d recommend quickly hitting the link below and grabbing one right from Google for $35.

The Chromecast is only getting started, and many developers are hard at work improving it. Just check out the new AirCast app that was released this weekend.

Verizon inks deal to provide 4G LTE and 3G in NYC subway stations
Aug 20th 2013, 16:44, by Robert Nelson

Some of the NYC subway stations already have WiFi and/or cellular service available, however as of today that list will expand to include 3G and 4G LTE from Verizon Wireless. The carrier, along with Transit Wireless has announced that service will be coming “over the next several weeks.” Those venturing into the subway with a Verizon device will be able to find coverage in any of the 36 stations that are already online.

verizon-logo-eric-hauser23

The coverage will include mid-town Manhattan and Chelsea will be coming later this year. While this looks like Big Red and Transit Wireless are both off to a good start together, this is not where they Verizon coverage is going to stop. In addition to the current 36 stations, there are 40 more in the works.

Transit Wireless has said that Verizon Wireless will be participating in phase 2 of the project and that is expected to be completed in the early part of 2014. The phase 2 coverage will include Grand Central Station, 34th St. Herald Square and Bryant Park in mid-town Manhattan and stations throughout the Borough of Queens.

Otherwise, looking at the subway coverage as a whole and it seems all four major US carriers are now on-board with Transit Wireless.

"We have now secured partnerships with all four major wireless carriers to bring the vast majority of New Yorkers, visitors, government agency personnel, transit employees, contractors and first responders the ability to be connected in the stations we've constructed – a real milestone."

Basically, it seems now that the partner relationships are all in place — Transit Wireless just needs to concentrate on the continued rollout. That all being said, those who happen to be in New York can check the mobile-friendly Transit Wireless website to see a list of which stations have wireless service available.
