YouTube v5.0 arrives for Android with a brand new user interface
Aug 19th 2013, 22:01, by Cory Gunther

Whoa! Out of nowhere this afternoon the folks from Google have just released a massive update to YouTube with some of the biggest and best changes yet. We have a completely redesigned and reworked YouTube, complete with a new icon, Google Now card-style user interface, multitasking and picture-in-picture, and much much more. Check it out and download the newest version below.

YouTube has just been completely redesigned from the ground up. Everything is different, for the better, and the slide-out menu is better than ever off to the left. The new app just arrived on the Play Store, and is a staged rollout. If you don’t get the update right away (which is happening a lot lately) we have the APK available for download below.

So what’s new? Lots of stuff! The new YouTube has a familiar Google Now style user interface with the “cards” layout. We have a feeling all their apps, and Android 5.0 KLP will move to this direction quite a bit. There’s now in-app multitasking, or picture-in-picture. You can minimize and watch a video while browsing for the next video at the same time. This will really come in handy, and even more so while streaming via Chromecast.

The minimize button will throw a playing video to the bottom corner, then you can expand it, or swipe to clear. While swiping the audio actually fades as the video does, it’s a neat effect, and is just awesome. Google’s really stepping things up here. You’ll understand once you try it. We also have quick access via a dropdown for playlists, videos, history, favorites and more, as well as the usual slide-out bar.

Everything looks different, the HD and CC buttons are gone and now in the menu instead of wasting space on the screen. This is quite a huge change to randomly just appear this afternoon, and we’re loving it. Check for updates yourself or grab the download link below.

Samsung Galaxy Gear detailed with built-in speakers, sensors galore
Aug 19th 2013, 21:06, by Cory Gunther

The talk around Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Gear smartwatch isn’t slowing down. After hearing multiple rumors about the device, Bloomberg confirmed the September 4th unveil last week, and now the details are starting to flood in. Last week we detailed many of the specs, and today we’re hearing more of the same, as well as tons of other interesting tidbits.

All the hardware details have been revealed this afternoon according to GigaOM, who’s source seems to mirror many of the statements from SamMobile last week. Those being a device rocking a Samsung Exynos dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and a 320 x 320 resolution display. Early reports claimed a 1.6-inch display, but today we’re also hearing a 1.1-inch screen will be strapped to your wrist.

The Galaxy Gear smartwatch will not be a “smartphone-like watch” with phone capabilities as some ridiculous rumors reported, and instead will be an extension of the Galaxy device you already own. Today’s tipster details tons of sensors on board, real-time sync using Bluetooth LE to connect and talk with other Galaxy smartphones and tablets, and even integrated speakers. Yes, music from your wrist.

Apparently the strap of the watch will have a 2MP camera integrated, which we’ve heard before, but we’re also being told it will have speakers integrated into the clasp. Then NFC will enable Samsung Beam for authentication methods, as well as various other sharing capabilities. A built-in accelerometer will know when the watch is flicked in a manor that you could be looking at it, and potentially turn on the display for you, which could act as a battery-saving feature.

In addition to all that we can expect the usual array of sensors for a smartwatch. Things to track calories, heart rate, and everything else like a Nike Fuel band and others on the market. It will be a jack of all trades, yet be stylish and simplistic sitting on your wrist.

Lastly the report details how the device will have Samsung’s App Store only, no Google Play, and work closely with other Samsung devices. Anything from emails, messages, open apps like Facebook and Twitter (installed at launch) and more will all sync using Samsung’s proprietary protocols. Read half an email on the watch, it will sync and start where you left off on a smartphone or Galaxy Tablet. Interesting report here to say the least.

We’ll surely see more leaks before the rumored September 4th reveal, and we’ll be live in Berlin with full details when that time comes as well. Stay tuned!

HTC One Max stylus blur tips Galaxy Note III battle
Aug 19th 2013, 20:36, by Cory Gunther

The HTC One Max phablet is coming, and it is coming soon. It’s no secret at this point that HTC has a large 5.9-inch smartphone in the works to take on the bigger competition, but one question has been whether or not we’ll get a stylus with it. For some it doesn’t matter, for other Galaxy Note and Note II users a stylus is critical. And now our latest leaked image could be hiding exactly that.

This afternoon we got another look at the HTC One Max smartphone out and in the wild. The hardware and all, instead of just a leaked “non-final artwork” render of what it could look like. While most sites (us included) focused on the fingerprint scanner on back, or the possibility of POGO pins for a dock on the bottom right, one other thing stood out.

There’s a lot of things at play here, but just like the Galaxy Note II and upcoming Note III, the HTC One Max could have a built-in stylus to take full advantage of that massive 5.9-inch 1080p HD display. HTC’s no strangers to the stylus from their Windows Mobile and HTC Flyer days, so it’s a possibility. If you look at the bottom corner of the HTC One Max (T6) in the image, you can clearly see an area this leakster decided to blur out. The blur is on the bottom edge, right where a stylus would slide out of the bottom of the chassis, similar to the Note II you see below.

Now that’s just a guess, and it really could be anything. From a previous sites watermark being blurred out in the leak, a serial number of some sort to hide the leaksters identity, or a few other things. This also is right around where the charging port is, so take this all with a grain of salt. However, HTC needs to be able to compete with the Galaxy Note lineup if they want this massive phone to be successful, and for many a stylus is a huge part of the buying decision.

We’ve seen no reports that a stylus will be embedded, but it’s possible. Rumors suggest HTC could unveil the new One Max in September, and release it later this year, so we’ll be sure and keep our eyes open for more details. Would a 5.9-inch 1080p quad-core Snapdragon 800 powered One Max with a stylus get your hard-earned cash? Let us know.

Sony Honami leak brings talk of a full-powered Mini
Aug 19th 2013, 20:22, by Robert Nelson

We have seen plenty of Sony Honami related leaks up until this point, however it looks like another has arrived. And while this one is on the topic of the Honami, this isn’t the same Honami we have been seeing. For some the Honami name has likely become known as a smartphone with a high-megapixel rear-facing camera.

This latest leak touches on the possibility of a mini. Enter the rumors of the Sony Honami Mini which have recently turned up on the esato user forums. In this case the details come along with an alleged press render of the handset. You cannot really see much from the image, however the details that arrived talk about how this device will be a mini in size, but not in specs.

Many of the mini handsets step down in both size and specs, however the Sony Honami Mini rumors suggest the device will keep the higher-end specs such as the 1080p display, Snapgragon 800 processor and 20 megapixel rear-facing camera — but just do with a smaller display. Anyway, at this point the handset is sporting a codename of Ray 3.

The catch at the moment, we are now talking about a rumored phone that is based on another rumored phone. With that in mind, Sony is expected to announce the Honami during IFA which kicks off in early-September. More to the point, Sony has already confirmed a press event scheduled for September 4th (just before IFA begins).

Otherwise, the still rumored specs of the Honami include a 1080p display, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, a 3000 mAh battery and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. And remember, Android Community will be live on-site in Berlin to bring the latest from the Sony announcement, and from IFA in general.
