YouTube app gets a big update

Google has begun rolling out an update to their YouTube app, and it's a massive departure from what you see now. It brings a host of new or updated features, and an updated UI, which doesn't surprise us at all (more on that in a minute).

As far as the app itself goes, just about everything has changed. The Google Now-esque cards have made their way to YouTube, and the slide-out menu has been redesigned. Curiously, the first thing on the new side menu is "Uploads", leading us to believe YouTube is concentrating on creation and uploads more than before.

Perhaps the biggest feature is the ability to swipe a video towards the bottom of the screen, and continue to peruse the app. The minimized video will still play, but you'll have the ability to search for other videos while you watch. This is a boon for tablet YouTubers, and we'll be curious to see if this has future implications for Chromecast.

A host of other smaller changes (or fixes, depending on your view) have been made, like screen not rotation automatically going landscape, and the tablet UI improving quite a bit. While this is a big update, and welcome, we're not surprised. At all. This redesign falls in line with other recently updated Google apps, and signals a larger shift in design thinking. The card interface looks a lot like Maps, and the slide-out menu is reminiscent of all recently updated Google apps. It was only a matter of time before YouTube got the treatment, and now it's here. Enjoy!
