Ube Bobine review

Posted: 30 Oct 2012 11:39 AM PDT

We’ve reviewed plenty of chargers over the years on AndroidGuys.  We’ve also reviewed plenty of phone mounts or stands as well.  Today, we’re reviewing a hybrid device that not only props your phone up and holds it in place, but also charges it at the same time.  It’s called Une Bobine and we’ve talked about them in the past.  (Readers may recall the Kickstarter project and our trip to the company HQ a few months back).

The Une Bobine tackles one of the more common issues that we run into when charging a phone on the go.  As some of you can attest, it’s nice to be able to see your screen while working on a laptop or desktop.  This is especially the case when using that handset as a secondary display for video chat, reading, or watching video.  It’s not always easy to charge and hold at the same time, without using separate devices.

Evernote announces major update to Skitch app

Posted: 30 Oct 2012 10:23 AM PDT

Evernote today announced a “major update” for its Skitch application for Android.  Details include a new, cleaner homescreen, cross-platform sync, improved search and more.  Seeing as how it’s a photo and sketch app at its heart, the new release features some great image-centric options.  Look for additional goodies such as:

  • Pixelate - obscure part of an image to protect private or sensitive information
  • Highlighter - partially transparent paintbrush tool to draw attention to an object or text in the image
  • Planning tool - select, move, resize annotations

EDITOR NOTE: It’s worth pointing out that this bit of news was scheduled to go live at 1PM EST with an embargo.  For whatever reason, the app does not show as updated yet nor does the Evernote blog have its live link.

UPDATE: It’s a go!

Get this look for your Android smartphone: Colors (by keeent)

One of our absolute favorite things about Android is the fact that you can bend and tweak the platform to your needs.  Sure, there’s rooting and modding for deep level personalization, but that stuff does not always concern the everyman user.  Some of just like to change the home screen around a bit and create a new user experience.

There’s a wonderful website that we’ve long appreciated called MyColorScreen which aims to shed light on all the great ways you can modify your home screens. To that end, we’ve created a series of posts on AndroidGuys where we will highlight an occasional design and its accompanying apps.  In a nutshell we will show you a new look for your Android handset and tell you which apps you’ll need if you want to mimic the feel. Please note that the following details are but the ingredients to which you can create your own delicious Android dish – results will vary.  And that’s awesome

Verizon today announced their next Android smartphone, the LG Spectrum 2, will arrive in but one day’s time. Expected to hit Verizon’s website on October 30, the handset will run $99 with a two-year service agreement and after $50 mail-in rebate.  The phone will show up in retail stores in “the coming weeks”.

Specifications for the Spectrum 2 include a 4.7-inch HD IPS display, dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 16GB internal storage, an 8-megapixel camera, and microSD expansion.  Powered by Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the phone also features NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, global roaming capability, and wireless charging.  LG, for its part, has also taken steps to include some of their custom touches in the Spectrum 2 such as Quick Memo and LG Tag+.  Considering the price this is definitely not a bad buy whatsoever.

Posted: 30 Oct 2012 07:20 AM PDT

Google has officially indicated that there are now more 700,000 apps in the Google Play Store, available for smartphones and tablets.  The news comes just a short week after Apple made the same claim for its App Store and looks to be a race to the next milestone.  After getting a late start against Apple four years ago this month, the Google Play Store/Android Market has grown some serious momentum en route to becoming the largest app distribution channel.
