Active Notifications app brings Moto X Active Display features to Android 4.3
Aug 7th 2013, 16:56, by Robert Nelson

Motorola unveiled the Moto X earlier in the month and while the handset has a decent set of specs, much of the focus was on the user experience. Part of that experience is something called Active Display. This means the handset will be able to show incoming notifications for items such as SMS messages or emails without having to light up the full display. With that in mind, a new app called Active Notifications has recently entered the Play Store and it will bring similar features to other handsets.

active-notifications-540

The Active Notifications app is available for free, however there is also a premium version with additional features for $0.99. The app is described as using the “Notification Listener” service that was recently introduced. That brings the first requirement — Android 4.3. To further that, the app is made for those with an AMOLED display. It was said those with an AMOLED display will have the “battery saving” feature.

Anyway, the features of this app include the ability to select which app notifications will display and also to not have any notifications display when the phone is put away. Well, specifically, notifications will not display when the phone is in your pocket, purse or placed face down on a table. Shifting over to the premium side and we find a few additional features.

Those include a “Sleep at Night” option which is just as the name would imply — it has the notifications shut down at night. The remaining premium features include the ability to automatically switch off the screen when dismissing notifications and a “More Privacy” feature which hides additional notification details.

Otherwise, the app is simple to use and has options to swipe up to see more details, swipe down to unlock the device and swipe left or right to dismiss a notification. Finally, while a firm commitment was not made just yet, the developer did mention that he is considering “creating a version for older versions of Android if there is enough interest.”

LG G2 hands-on: everything you need to know
Aug 7th 2013, 16:03, by Cory Gunther

This afternoon the folks from LG have just announced and detailed their new flagship G2 smartphone, and it’s quite impressive. We knew it was coming, but LG has come out swinging here full of new features and software tweaks aside from offering a top-tier smartphone to rival the best of the best. Yes we have a 2.3 GHz quad-core processor and the world’s thinnest 5.2-inch 1080p HD display, but you’ll want to hear everything else LG is offering as well. Here’s everything you need to know.

Screen Shot 2013-08-07 at 8.36.50 AM

As a quick refresher we’ll go over the stunning hardware, then get into all those new software changes, that camera, new battery technology, and of course the buttons on the back, so stick around for the good stuff. It isn’t all about having top-tier specs here, and LG apparently realized that. They’re offering tons of neat features such as tap to wake the screen (since power button is on back) multiple screen unlock patterns for guest mode, and much more.

Hardware

So, with the LG G2 you’ll get a 5.2-inch 1920 x 1080p full HD display with 450 nits of brightness, so this thing should be excellent for outdoor usage. The world’s thinnest LCD is used here, keeping the phone fully HD, beautiful, yet not too fat. Then as we all know it comes with a 2.3 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM, 16 and 32GB storage options, a 13 megapixel IOS camera, and just confirmed this morning is a 3,000 mAh battery. It’s as well rounded of a device as they come. But there’s more.

Display and “Knock Knock”

LG has designed what they’re calling the world’s thinnest full HD LCD display, one that also manages to come in with minimal bezels. Making the entire device feel small, even though the screen is rather large. An edge-to-edge display, 1080p HD resolution, and 450 nits of brightness promises a quality viewing experience, even outdoors.

Then since there’s no power button on the side of the device, how do we unlock it or quickly check updates while it’s sitting on a table? LG has a new feature called “knock knock” were the user can simply double tap the screen to wake it up. LG promises the sensors on board won’t let the screen awake from our pocket tapping it, and it will recognize a finger. This is probably in part due to the always awake Snapdragon 800 processor.

Screen Shot 2013-08-07 at 8.36.16 AM

This same knock knock feature will put the display to sleep as well. Simply double tap an area on the display with nothing going on, no widgets or anything, and it will go right back to sleep. Essentially a few taps to wake er up and check and email, and a few more to put it back to sleep. We’re not sure what we think of this yet, but the idea could actually become quite useful.

Camera

The G2 smartphone sports a next-level 13 megapixel camera from LG, with a tiny sensor to keep the phone thin, while also adding the much-needed feature of optical image stabilization. This promises unseen quality from smartphone photos, especially during low-light or indoor usage. We’ll have to test this in our review, of course.

The camera has anti-shake features, finger print coating over the lens, and even sapphire glass for ultimate protection from scratches. The 13 megapixel camera has 4x digital zoom, a 9-point auto-focus system, auto scene prediction for smart-mode photos, and shoots full 60 FPS 1080p video. LG’s been adding quality cameras to their phones lately, so we’ll be excited to try this once it becomes available.

Screen Shot 2013-08-07 at 8.37.56 AM

Software

Now the software here is Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, but as expected LG’s done plenty to differentiate them from the competition. Just like with the Optimus G and G Pro, there’s tons of customization. QuickMemo instantly lets you take notes, and they have a new crop feature that lets you screen capture an entire page, not just what’s visible on your display. Think entire emails, full web-pages, and more.

As we mentioned above the software features a knock knock option to turn on the display, but that isn’t all LG had up their sleeves. They’ve integrated an optional guest mode, for when you’re sharing the phone with a friend, family member or kids. Simply set it all up, and a second (always available) screen unlock pattern will unlock the phone right into guest mode. Here you can allow (or block) certain apps to be accessible, web usage, and more. It’s like kids zone, but better.

Screen Shot 2013-08-07 at 8.33.36 AM

They have a new text link feature, which will link phone numbers, emails, webpages, and much more similar to what we’ve seen in the past. Only on a much wider scale. If an email says the word “Calendar” it will link that word to the actual Calendar app. Neat right. And the same thing applies to YouTube, maps, calculator and more. You name it, it does it.

SlashGear 1020_20130807_09_56_52_Pro__highres-LG-G2

Then there’s also a new multi-task system, which to be honest doesn’t make sense. Android multitasks better than most operating systems already, so this just might confuse people. Long press on the on-screen home button will get the usual multitask options, but this is a slide-out menu. Completely new and different.

While using an app, a quick three finger swipe to the left will hide the app. It tosses it aside, saves it, and stands by for further instructions. You can do this with up to three apps at a time, and a quick three finger swipe from the left bezel to the right side opens this new “slide-out” tray. Showing all 3 saved apps, for quick toggling back and forth. What’s even better is LG claims this supports any and ALL 3rd party apps too.

Rear Buttons

The physical controls you are familiar with are gone here. LG moved everything to the back. Under the 13-megapixel camera there are touch-sensitive volume controls and the physical power button, which doubles as a shortcut to LG's QuickMemo note-taking app and the camera.

SlashGear 1020_20130807_09_45_48_Pro-LG-G2

This might take some getting use to, to be honest but we’re already using it rather well and don’t think it will be a cause of concern. Oh, and in case you’re worried about fingerprints all over that camera, it has an anti-fingerprint coating to help prevent blurry photos. The slight hump ruins the awesome sleek factor a tiny bit, but overall we can’t really complain as this phone feels excellent in our hands.

Thoughts

We’ve only had a few moments here in New York City with the device, but so far it’s giving off a pretty good impression. The screen is truly stunning, gets extremely bright, has crisp colors and great viewing angles. The design of the phone is quite nice, and the thin bezels are a welcomed edition. So long as we don’t accidentally touch the sides and launch apps. Kidding.

Screen Shot 2013-08-07 at 8.33.12 AM

The fact that LG added a huge 3,000 mAh battery here all in this small and sleek of a device is rather impressive. Yes the Note II and RAZR MAXX HD have large battery options as well, but not in a phone as sleek or pretty as this. Add in the new camera enhancements, tweaks to the UI, and more, and LG might actually have a pretty awesome device.

We’ll need plenty more time with it, so stay tuned for our full thoughts and more details on carrier availability in the coming weeks. Sound off in the comment section below if you have any questions.

T-Mobile to launch the LG G2, Optimus F6 and Optimus F3 smartphones
Aug 7th 2013, 15:46, by Robert Nelson

LG has officially announced the G2 this morning and as we have already learned, that handset will be available with all four major US carriers. LG has yet to provide launch date details, and for that we begin looking towards the carriers. We suspect all four carriers will offer some details soon, however it looks like T-Mobile is the first out of the gate.

G2 (front)

The carrier has confirmed the upcoming launch of the G2. And coming along, there was also details on the upcoming launch of the Optimus F6 and further confirmation on the Optimus F3. The catch here is in the lack of details. T-Mobile has confirmed that all three handset are coming, however they have yet to say exactly when or what the price will be for two of those three.

Details for the G2 include a handset that will feature a 5.2-inch Full HD IPS display and Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. This handset will also have a 13 megapixel rear-facing camera and 3000 mAh battery. So far T-Mobile has launched a coming soon style teaser page and said the pricing and release date details will be shared in the “coming weeks.”

Optimus F6 (front)

Shifting over to the Optimus F6 and we see a similar story. T-Mobile has offered the same line about how the pricing and availability details would be announced in the coming weeks. Otherwise, this handset will arrive with 4G LTE connectivity, a 4.5-inch IPS display and 5 megapixel rear-facing camera. Both the Optimus F6 and G2 will feature some LG branded software goodies including Quick Memo and QSlide.

Optimus F3 (Hero)

Finally, unlike these other two handsets, the Optimus F3 is available as of today. T-Mobile has this listed as being “its most affordable” LTE handset and with features to include a 4-inch IPS display, dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 5 megapixel rear-facing camera and running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. The Optimus F3 is available on a limited time promotion with $0 down and 24 monthly payments of $10. Or in other words, for $240.

The details have finally been unveiled regarding LG’s next generation smartphone, the LG G2. With a stunning 5.2-inch edge-to-edge display, quad-core processing power, and a solid new camera. While the event is still going on live, LG has just confirmed some excellent news. The LG G2 will be available on all four major US carriers.

Screen Shot 2013-08-07 at 8.15.09 AM

Yes, that means Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint will all be getting the new G2. Not just AT&T or some other carriers, everyone will get a chance to get their hands on this impressive looking device. Being powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor running at 2.3 GHz, you’ll want this phone.

In case you missed the news, the G2 sports a 5.2-inch 1080p full HD display, quad-core power, 32GB of storage, and a 13 megapixel camera with optical image stabilization features, and much much more.

We haven’t been following this devices run-ins with the FCC, but LG just confirmed all carriers would be receiving the device, sadly, they didn’t say when. We have heard rumors the LG G2 will arrive before the end of August, to beat the Galaxy Note III and rival the Galaxy S4, so that’s a possibility. LG has confirmed however that it will be available on 100 different carriers within 90 days of today. So get excited folks!

LG G2 official: 5.2-inch HD display, quad-core, and 3,000 mAh battery
Aug 7th 2013, 15:07, by Cory Gunther

Last week was all about Motorola with their new take on the smartphone, and today it is time for LG to show us what they’ve been working on. Live in New York City LG has officially unveiled their all-new LG G2 smartphone. The spec war is certainly still going here, with this device coming in right between a Galaxy S4 and a Galaxy Note II. More details on this 5.2-inch 1080p quad-core powerhouse are coming in as we speak.

lg_g2

As we’re sure many of you already know, this smartphone from LG is the first device to market with Qualcomm’s brand new Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor. It’s chugging along at 2.3 GHz with 2GB of RAM, and should have some of the fastest speeds, while remaining extremely efficient to preserve battery life. Hopefully LG has a winner here.

We’ve seen countless leaks, and even a video of this new phone, so nothing is extremely new as far as the hardware is concerned, but LG has some neat new software tricks you’ll want to see in our hands-on coming up quick. So what about the hardware? We’ll tell you.

The G2 rocks the world’s thinnest 1080p full HD display in a smartphone, coming in at 5.2-inches, and LG’s touting 450 nits of brightness for the brightest display full of colors too. Add in the Snapdragon quad-core, 2GB of RAM, and that rumored 13 megapixel camera (which is now confirmed) and this is shaping up quite nicely. LG has confirmed the device features next-gen OIS (optical image stabilization) for quality photos, and then of course there’s those backside touch controls.

Screen Shot 2013-08-07 at 8.12.34 AM

Just as all the leaks showed, the LG G2 sports a brand new take on smartphone buttons, and LG’s moved the volume up/down and power buttons all to the back. In theory it makes sense for when the phones up to your ear (the way I hold mine at least) but we’ll see in our hands on. There’s volume rockers, the power/wake button, and it even gives you quick instant access to the camera and QuickMemo note-taking apps, if you’d like, with shortcut options. That could come in handy.

On important aspect of a massive smartphone such as the G2 with the world’s fastest processor and a huge 5.2-inch HD display is the battery life. Thankfully this was one area the rumors were incorrect, and the LG G2 will sport a rather large 3,000 mAh battery all inside this ultra-sleek package. That’s pretty impressive when you see how thin this phone really is. More details will be coming up as they reveal it all on stage, so stick around for all the info and hands-on coverage.
