The original PadFone Infinity was launched with fanfare at MWC 2013, back in February, and, barely six months later, Asus is refreshing it with a better processor and a bevy of software tweaks.
The new PadFone Infinity is powered by a Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2GHz, as opposed to the slower Snapdragon 600 chip that ticked inside the previous generation. Other changes on the hardware front include the presence of a microSD card slot, which was a request from many users, but also the halving of the internal storage space – the new Infinity is available in 16GB and 32GB, compared to 32GB and 64GB before. The latter change seems a cost-cutting measure, that is partially offset by the microSD card slot and the generous amounts of cloud storage that Asus throws in as a perk. One final change is an upgrade in the memory department, which is now 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM.
The new smartphone/tablet combo runs Android 4.2.2 out of the box, and features a series of changes to the user interface to make it more consistent. One big update came to the camera firmware, which now combines information from several physical pixels to produce one scaled down image that is sharper and less noisy.
Asus' new PadFone features a nicer "diamond-cut" metallic body, compared to the brushed metal texture before, and is available in black and white. The tablet dock remained virtually unchanged, so if you already have one you can use it with the upgraded smartphone.
The smartphone itself will go in Taiwan for the equivalent of $640 off-contract, while the tablet dock costs about $240. No news on the availability of the new Asus PadFone Infinity in its home market and the rest of the world.
