App Updates: ESPN Fantasy, NFL Mobile, Twitter, TouchTunes and more
Aug 28th 2013, 20:44, by Cory Gunther

Between all the news of leaked HTC One Max images and the Nexus 4 dropping $100, we wanted to share a quick reminder that tons of apps are receiving updates from last night and this afternoon. There’s always too many to list, but a few important ones made our cut. From NFL Mobile, ESPN Fantasy Football (heck yes) to Twitter and more.

We’ll start with Twitter, since it is the most widely used app on the list. This afternoon Twitter has posted tons of details about their new app update on their official blog. The official Twitter app for Android has a brand new look for conversations. They want you retweeted about the VMA’s and Miley Cyrus, talking about how the Packers are the best team in the NFL, and everything else going on in the Twittersphere.

To make things easier Twitter for Android has a blue line in your home timeline to indicate a conversation between people you follow. The comments and replies now appear above the previous most recent, and viewing entire conversations is much easier on mobile. This is a breeze on third party apps, so well done Twitter for being late to your own party. They’ve also cut the download size in half for older devices, optimized Twitter for aging weaker smartphones, and a report Tweet as abusive or spam has been added. Finally. Get it now!

ESPN’s Fantasy Football app was updated with additional support for older devices, especially ones with lower resolutions. I’ll be switching around my RB’s this year with ESPN’s app, and plan to take down all my Twitter friends. You know who you are! NFL and Verizon’s NFL Mobile also received an update, and yes, the old one is still a bloatware app that can’t be removed. The new NFL Mobile recently received a massive overhaul, and is now operated by the NFL and not Verizon. The update is only fixing some bugs and optimizations, but I’ve been experiencing improved video playback thus far.

WatchESPN received the same minor “bug fixes and improved performance” update, so go ahead and grab that for all your streaming sports needs. Then one of my favorite apps for taking over a nearby restaurant or sports bar is TouchTunes. This app lets you control the music for the entire bar, if it’s TouchTunes enabled, all from your smartphone. I always play some ridiculous song to get everyone angry, then get back to the top hits. Get their latest update here, but a few comments mentioned losing their credits, so proceed with caution.

A few other noteworthy updates we saw today was the Verizon Tones app, Samsung’s Group Play app, and Imgur got a biggie too. Get them all from the Play Store.

Acer Liquid S2 benchmark reveals Snapdragon 800, 6-inch 1080p display
Aug 28th 2013, 20:18, by Cory Gunther

It has only been about 3 months since the folks at Acer unveiled their Liquid S1 5.7-inch phablet, and now we’re already seeing details and signs that the second-gen S2 is coming soon. The Liquid S2 was outed in a leaked roadmap earlier this month, but today we’re getting even more details about this flagship smartphone.

If the leaked roadmap details along with today’s finding of a benchmark test end up accurate, Acer could be preparing a pretty impressive 6.0-inch smartphone (or phablet) for later this year. As the leak goes, the Liquid S2 will sport a 6-inch 1920 x 1080p full HD IPS display, and of course be running Android. Previously we had suggestions on the processor, but the benchmark below confirms the details.

This 6-inch phablet is rocking Qualcomm’s 2.3 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor along with 2GB of RAM, and previous reports suggested 16GB of internal storage, a 13 megapixel camera, and even NFC. Interestingly, the tests show Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, but the leaked roadmap had this device listed as “K OS” hinting at Key Lime Pie, while all their other devices in that slide ran Jelly Bean.

So while all we really have new today is a benchmark result confirming the 1080p display, quad-core Snapdragon 800, and 4.2.2 on board, the rumors still have this device coming out a little bit different. We’ll likely never see it arrive in the US, but something like this surely will have its place vs the Galaxy Note III, HTC One Max, and even Sony’s upcoming Homani smartphone.

Acer makes some pretty great laptops and tablets, and this smartphone shows they’re ready to step up their game in mobile too. We’re expecting to see the Liquid S2 at IFA in Berlin next week, so stay tuned for more details.

WikiPad 7-inch gaming tablet hits the UK September 27th
Aug 28th 2013, 19:51, by Cory Gunther

If anyone still remembers the WikiPad we have some good news for customers in the UK. After having a slew of delays last year, missing their end of October release date, then re-announcing the device in a smaller 7-inch Tegra 3 package earlier this year, the WikiPad is finally available. And we now have a UK release date too.

The 7-inch Tegra 3 powered slate that docks into a cumbersome dock for a full “console-like” gaming experience finally hit the streets stateside back in June, although we haven’t heard much since then. However, this week we’ve learned that those gaming in the UK will be able to buy one come September 27th.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’d rather just get the more powerful, more up to date NVIDIA SHIELD gaming console and call it a day. However, if you like the idea of having a 7-inch tablet you can take out and walk around with, then dock into the gamepad then this might be for you.

The WikiPad gaming device has a 7-inch display powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM. The 1280 x 800 resolution screen is decent, and it all runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. So it’s a little behind the times. It also sports 16GB of internal storage and will be available in the UK on the 27th starting at £249.99. We’re hearing it will be available from a wide array of well-known retailers in the UK.

Did you forget about this tablet and get a SHIELD, or is it still on your radar? Let us know in the comments below.

Imgur update adds image save, pinch-to-zoom, upload progress and more
Aug 28th 2013, 19:09, by Cory Gunther

The extremely popular photo hosting and social site Imgur released their app for Android back in June, and they’ve been extremely busy updating it rather often with improvements. The last was earlier this month, and yesterday they pushed a pretty large update that is all about, well, photos of course.

Imgur is one of the largest photo hosting sites on the web, and has a huge community of people and hilarious comments, many of which are Reddit users. So you know you’ll have a good time reading comments. Today’s update to their Android app has tons of improvements to make the experience even better.

Imgur v1.2 arrived with an improved option to save photos right from the app, which of course you can share later and try to act like it’s an original find. They’ve added pinch-to-zoom for the app, instead of having to go to the browser, and we now have an upload progress bar on Android devices too.

There’s a new image and gallery viewer, they’ve improved the scrolling in-app, and we even have an auto-retry on upload failure now too. It might not be the best app we’ve seen, but at this rate they’ll have everything perfected in no time. So get to viewing those funny pictures and GIFs of Miley Cyrus, cute puppies or kittens, and have some fun.
