Experiment shows Galaxy S III touch accuracy far better than new iPhones
Oct 25th 2013, 23:37, by Dima Aryeh

My father owns an iPhone 5, and every time he has asked me to fix something or install something, I’ve had a bit of trouble with the display. What I touch doesn’t always register accurately, especially on the top of the screen (I can never hit the install button in the App Store). I attributed this to a small screen and me being used to my Galaxy Note devices, but it appears there is a lot more to it.

OptoFidelity performed a few tests on the brand new iPhone 5S and 5C, comparing them to the aging Samsung Galaxy S III. One of the tests was touch accuracy. It used a machine that uses an artificial finger to touch points on the display and compare the coordinates to what the operating system reports, which shows how accurate the touch screen really is. The results are shocking.

The charts for the iPhones are covered in red dots, while the green area is fairly small. In comparison, the Galaxy S III has its display filled with green dots and only the edges are red. Green means that the accuracy is within a milliliter, while red means that the accuracy is off by over a millimeter. And the iPhone touch accuracy is quite a bit off.

Touch Accuracy 3

Here, the touch accuracy is displayed on the top row of each device’s built in keyboard. As you can see, it’s quite difficult to press the O and P buttons accurately. In Samsung’s case, all the keys are equally easy to push due to some superb touch accuracy.

However, the iPhone does hold one advantage. The response time of the touch screen is faster than the most popular Android devices, so what you touch happens a tiny bit faster. This is undeniably important, but touch accuracy is arguably far more important. Have you experienced these issues?

Six ways to protect your phone
Oct 25th 2013, 23:07, by Nick Sarafolean

If you’ve ever dropped you phone, or for that matter any electronic, then you know that the moment after the drop is horrendous. You’ve heard the crash, possibly even the shatter of glass, and now you have to brace yourself to pick it up and survey the damage done. But it doesn’t necessarily have to be this way. There are ways to protect your phone and help to prevent or at least minimize damage to your phone. Want to take a look at some of them? Yeah, so do we.

Use a case

You may not like it, but using a case on your phone is the simplest way to protect it. Varying the amount of protection that you want is easy as pie with the abundance of cases available. You could go whole hog and get something that’s waterproofed and will protect your phone from a two-story drop. You could just as easily get a case that simply covers the back of your phone. Whatever you want in a case, you can get.

Get a screen protector

Nothing pairs better with a case than a screen protector. And honestly, screen protectors get a bad rep. We can all remember the days when they were terrible, smudgy pieces of plastic. But things have changed since then. These days, you can buy screen protectors that you don’t even notice. You can even buy screen protectors that are made out of tempered glass. The payoff of having a screen protector far outweighs the slight discomfort or cost of it.

Don’t take your phone to the beach

A part of us weeps that we even have to say this. As fun as it may sound to take duck face selfies by the ocean, just don’t bring your phone to the beach. Unless you’ve splurged for a Lifeproof case or something, your phone is almost certainly going to get injured. If not from the water all around, then certainly from the sand. Don’t think that your Gorilla Glass display will protect from sand because sand laughs in the face of Gorilla Glass before ripping it to shreds. So yeah, don’t take your phone to the beach.

Don’t put your phone and your keys in the same pocket

Bad idea. Really bad idea. Just like sand, keys love to destroy your phone’s screen. In this case, you should just do yourself a favor and put your phone and your keys in different pockets. Otherwise, you might get a sad when your phone’s display gets all scratched-like.

Phones and bathrooms don’t mix

Ever had that time when your friend says, “I broke my phone yesterday.” and then you ask, “How?” and they reply, “I dropped it in the toilet.” and you laugh in their face? Well, it’s pretty funny and kind of sad. Moral of the story is: phones and bathrooms simply don’t go together.

Get insurance for your phone

If none of the above work out but you have insurance on your phone, then you’re good. Whether you’re clumsy or you just happened to have an accident, phone insurance can usually keep you covered for some sort of cost. Most of the carriers offer some sort of mobile insurance plan and if your carrier doesn’t, then there are third-party options such as SquareTrade. Whatever the case, phone insurance is usually the most comprehensive option.

We’re hoping that at least some of these suggestions will be of use to you. Maybe they’ll even keep your phone from getting destroyed. At any rate, remember that it’s always smart to protect your phone!

If you have any other suggestions, feel free to list them in the comments.

MOGA Ace Power leaked, a controller fitted around your device instead of under it
Oct 25th 2013, 21:58, by Dima Aryeh

MOGA controllers are awesome accessories that allow you to play games (like first person shooters) the way they were meant to be played: with a controller, not clunky touchscreen inputs. The MOGA Power series even charges your device with a built in battery, which makes it all the better. However, all of these accessories have one issue. When clamping the phone into the built in clip, the whole thing becomes top heavy.

Thanks to @evleaks, we can check out some leaked images of MOGA’s newest potential product, the MOGA Ace Power. We’ve seen this concept many times before, but this is the first time we’ve seen it done by a popular company. It’s a controller split in two, with each piece flanking your phone’s display. It’s an awesome product judging by looks alone, and we can’t wait to get our hands on it.

This controller is also part of the Power line of accessories, so it comes with a built in 1,800 mAh battery with a connector on one of the sides to charge your device.

Unfortunately, the product in these renders is made for the iPhone 5 and 5S, having a Lightning connector inside. This is why it’s so easy to make iPhone accessories: one accessory can fit multiple devices. However, we haven’t given up hope that PowerA will make a few versions for some popular Android devices, or maybe a universal one with no charging capabilities (which I would be fine with). But having this for a Galaxy Note 3, with that beautiful and massive 5.7-inch display, would be perfect.

If this was available for your favorite Android device, would you buy one? Do you think of these accessories as necessary? Or would you rather pick up an NVIDIA SHIELD? Leave a comment telling us your thoughts!
