HTC One SV receives Android 4.2.2 and Sense 5 update
Nov 5th 2013, 03:09, by Juan Carlos Torres

It is always good news when devices that don’t always make it to the headlines still get some much needed love. This time it’s the HTC One SV’s turn as it receives an update that brings its software to a more recent Android 4.2 and Sense 5 versions.

The HTC One SV was launched January this year and sported some rather decent mid-range hardware. A dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4, running at clock speeds of 1.2 GHz, and 1 GB of RAM ran the show. The 4.3-inch display only supported a resolution of 480×800 pixels but the 5 megapixel rear camera and 1.6 megapixel front-facing camera are capable of recording 1080p and 720p videos. The smartphone only had 8 GB of internal storage but can be expanded using the microSD slot. It had support for a variety of connectivity options and networks, including Bluetooth 4.0, CDMA networks, and 4G LTE.

This smartphone originally launched with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich but eventually received an update that brought Android 4.1 and the Sense 4 custom interface. While this update is no Android 4.4 KitKat, or even the latest Jelly Bean, Android 4.3, it’s a welcome update nonetheless. At the moment, no changelog has been provided, though we might hear about what has changed specifically for the One SV once more people have had their hands on the update.

The Android 4.2.2 and Sense 5 update for the HTC One SV has started rolling out to European handsets but, as always, it should take some time before it reaches international models as well. The 431MB update is available over-the-air only, so make sure you have a stable connection before updating.

Alcatel One Touch Tab 7 available from Three UK with MiFi starter kit
Nov 5th 2013, 02:16, by Juan Carlos Torres

UK carrier Three has just announced a special promo that will help people on the go take advantage of its broadband network. For a limited time period, it will be offering the low-cost Alcatel One Touch Tab 7 with a Huawei E5220 MiFi starter pack for a discounted price.

Early this year, Alcatel introduced the One Touch Tab 7 with lower than modest specs. It ran on a 1 GHz single-core Rockchip RK2928 and only had 1 GB of RAM. Storage capacity is capped at 4 GB but can thankfully be expanded with a microSD card. The 7-inch TFT display only has a resolution of 1024×600 pixels. It only has one camera, located on the front-facing side and only sports 0.3 megapixels. It does have a large 3000 mAh battery which should give the tablet enough juice, considering the hardware. Everything about the One Touch Tab 7 screams budget tablet, but it might just be enough for what some people might need, especially given the relatively low price tag.

Paired with a Huawei E5220 MiFi 1GB starter kit, the One Touch Tab 7 becomes even more useful as a portable entertainment, browsing, and e-commerce device. Running Android 4.1, the tablet has access to hundreds of Android apps and games from Google Play Store. Of course, given the capabilities of the device, one shouldn’t expect to run resource-hungry high-performance games. Still, the tablet should be enough for basic needs and family use.

With this latest promo, the Alcatel One Touch Tab 7′s price tag has been slashed in half to 64.99 GBP or roughly $105. This price cut only applies if purchased together with the Huawei E5220 MiFi, which normally costs 49.99 GBP, around $80. This is a limited time offer, however, that lasts only up to January 2014.

Vivo Xplay3S makes an appearance in leaked photo
Nov 5th 2013, 01:39, by Juan Carlos Torres

Popular Chinese electronics manufacturer BBK might be on the verge of outing yet another unique smartphone soon. If all goes well and according to the specs boasted by the company last month, we might soon be setting our eyes on the Vivo Xplay3S, the world’s first 2K smartphone.

BBK seems to be a company bent on pushing the boundaries of smartphones, or at least making a name for itself by being unique, if not eccentric. In August, it announced the Vivo X3, so far the world’s thinnest smartphone with a thickness of 5.75 mm, squarely beating titleholder Huawei Ascend P6‘s 6.18 mm and Sony Xperia Z Ultra‘s 6.5 mm. Then a few weeks ago, the company teased some illustrations of what it calls the world’s first 2K display smartphone. This practically means a screen resolution of 2560×1440 crammed in a smartphone-sized display.

Over at the Chinese social networking site Weibo, the Vivo Xplay3S appears in the first ever photo of an actual device. The post doesn’t give any new detail other than the use of Corning Glass 3 and a high-strength steel frame. At the moment, we still don’t know the actual screen size, much less the effects of such a high-pixel density on even something as big as a 6-inch screen. The Vivo Xplay3S is still expected to be touting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 and support dual-mode LTE. But other than that, much of the device still remains a mystery.

There are also no new details regarding the product’s unveiling, pricing, or availability. But if a seemingly finished model is already making a photo appearance, presuming it is an actual device and not just a frame, we can probably expect it really soon.
