When Samsung announced their Galaxy Gear wearable watches yesterday, they spent some time discussing some of the basic functions like taking or making phone calls, checking notifications, and even taking pictures. In case you did not catch it though, Samsung also promised there would be several apps designed to run specifically on Galaxy Gear. Some of the first examples of these are starting to pop up and help give us an idea of how Galaxy Gear may actually prove to be useful.

At this time, neither Facebook nor Twitter have announced plans to support Galaxy Gear with dedicated apps, though you will be able to view notifications from the regular Android apps. However, social network Path is promising to support Galaxy Gear at launch with the ability to view rich notifications, share photos, locations, and comment or provide feedback from the Gear device. eBay is another developer promising support at launch, indicating their app will let you browse notifications, place bids, and check on the status of auctions, helping snipers become even better.

Given the form factor and hardware included, it should be no surprise that an app like RunKeeper will support Galaxy Gear. This will likely take the form of an app that mirrors what RunKeeper has done for the Pebble watch, letting users display statistics and access audio functions as they workout. Another app that is on the list is Evernote, but no details as to exactly how their app will manifest itself have been released.

Other apps that are in the works for the launch of Galaxy Gear include Line, an Asian messaging service; Atooma, an IFTTT type app; MyFitnessPal, a fitness app; Tripit, which is a travel app; Vivino Wine Scanner which will take advantage of the built-in camera to help you get more info about wine based on the label; photo-sharing app Banjo; and location-sharing app Glimpse. Sources indicate Snapchat may also be working on a Gear app to be ready for the launch.

What app would you like to see developed for Galaxy Gear or any of the other smartwatches poised to hit the market?
