Staples offering Nexus 7 tablet, shipping mid-July

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 11:01 AM PDT

Staples has become the first retail chain to offer the new Asus-designed Google Nexus 7 tablet.  As is the case with the Google Play Store, customers can only pre-order their device at this point with shipping expected between July 12-17 and arrival no sooner than July 13.  This matches up with initial reports that the 7-inch Android 4.1 tablet would arrive in mid-July.

We're very excited to see this device in a retail environment as it's a great way to get in front of customers.  We recently discussed this very topic on last week's podcast and pretty much everyone expected this would not be the case.  Given the low margin, we fully anticipated this going as Google Play exclusive.

Currently, the 16GB version ($249) appears to be the only model available so it remains to be seen whether the 8GB edition will come to retail.

Respect knuckles to Androinica for the heads up.

Rumor: T-Mobile’s Samsung Galaxy S Blaze Q due August 15

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 07:08 AM PDT

Remember that Samsung sliding QWERTY for T-Mobile that arrived on our radar a few weeks back?  Carrying the model number of SGH-T699, the phone was found hanging in the wild and looking production-ready.  New details surfacing today suggest that it will be called the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze Q and that it will arrive on August 15th.

We're not big fans of the mouthy name for this phone but we're happy to see a sliding QWERTY with mid-range specs.  As the form factor is not all that popular these days, it's something that texting lovers and socialites tend to like.  Specs are rumored to include a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, 1GB RAM, 720p HD display, a pair-of cameras, and Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0.4).

Given the purported hardware, it's likely that T-Mobile will not ask for more than $100-$150 for this phone, if that much.  With just over a month before the expected arrival date, chances are good we'll find out soon enough.

No need to worry: Exploding Samsung Galaxy S III found to be user error

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 05:08 AM PDT

Remember a few weeks ago, when we reported that someone's Galaxy S III had exploded internally and melted straight through the casing? Well, folks, it looks like Samsung had a chance to get their hands on this device, and here's what they had to say about it:

Samsung contracted Fire Investigations UK (FIUK), an independent third-party organization, to determine the exact cause of the damage inflicted on a GALAXY SIII unit, which had allegedly been affected by heat.

The damaged device and additionally provided devices were examined and exposed to a series to tests. The investigation summary states that "The energy source responsible for generating the heat has been determined as external to the device" and "the device was not responsible for the cause of the fire."

Additionally, the investigation results state, "The only way it was possible to produce damage similar to the damage recorded within the owner's damaged device was to place the devices or component parts within a domestic microwave."

Now, for those who don't recall, here was the user's original tale:

…suddenly a white flame, sparks and a bang came out of the phone. I pulled in to look at my phone, the phone burned from the inside out. Burned through the plastic and melted my case to my phone. The phone kept working but without any signal.

I brought it to the carphone warehouse and they told me that they couldnt replace it for me that they had to send it off to be checked out first. No even replacement phone, left with nothing.
The phone was destroyed and it slightly burned a piece of plastic on the inside of my car. And they are refusing to give me a replacement they had to send it off. Probably nothing I can do, but Im really annoyed. That could have burned the side of my face or through my pocket and my leg, or set fire to my bed. It's very dangerous.

Tsk-tsk, young chap. Turns out this whole story was fake to begin with, and user Dillo2k10 has even updated his post on boards.ie, saying:

I would like to retract my original statement. The damage to the phone was caused by another person, and they were attempting to recover the phone from water this later caused the damage shown on the phone. It occurred due to a large amount of external energy and there was no fault with the phone. This was not a deliberate act but a stupid mistake.

I am unable to comment any further.

So remember, folks. If your phone gets wet, don't nuke it in the microwave. But, if you do, don't blame Samsung. It'll come back at you.

Be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments.

Galaxy Nexus returns to Play Store with extended shipping time

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 04:47 AM PDT

The Android world was all a'buzz with the Galaxy Nexus last week, due to the fact that a sales ban was put in place. Google and Samsung immediately began working together on a software fix to circumvent the ban, and it looks like we've got success... in a way.

Right now, you can head to the Google Play store and pick one up, but there's one difference: you will now have to wait 2-3 weeks for the device to ship. Prior to the whole legal fiasco, your shipping was almost instant. While we're not sure why these new GNex's have to wait so long to ship, we assume it's for software update purposes.

If you're wanting to get one for yourself, hit the source link below. Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments.
