AT&T and Fon agreement means global WiFi hotspot sharing
Sep 24th 2013, 14:28, by Robert Nelson

AT&T and Fon have announced a new partnership that will mean more WiFi hotspot access for customers of both companies. Basically, AT&T users will now have access to Fon hotspots and Fon users will now have access to AT&T hotspots. The agreement has been signed and things will be going into effect immediately.

According to details coming from the announcement, this means AT&T users will gain access to the “hundreds of thousands” of international Fon hotspots. On the other side, Fon users will gain access to the “more than 30,000″ hotspots across the US. Those AT&T hotspots can be found at a variety of locations including restaurants, hotels, bookstores and retailers.

Further details here point to this hotspot sharing including support for smartphones as well as other WiFi enabled devices. Those looking to get started will need to download and install the AT&T WiFi International app (available from the Play Store). That app is available for devices running Android 2.2 or later and brings features to include the ability to authenticate to partner hotspots without needing to enter a user name and password.

In addition, the app also allows users to see partner hotspots that are within range and search based on city and/or country with a map view and a list view for all available hotspots.

Anyway, as one would expect, both companies appear happy with this agreement. Fon has said they are “happy to be an important part of their [the AT&T] global Wi-Fi strategy” and AT&T has said they are using Fon to further expand their international Wi-Fi availability which in turn, will make it “easier for AT&T customers to stay connected to what matters most during their travels abroad.”

iMessage app unofficially arrives for Android
Sep 24th 2013, 13:59, by Robert Nelson

There are plenty of cross-platform messaging apps available, however there are some that are still limited to a single mobile operating system. In this case, one of the apps that is still limited is iMessage, which is available on iOS devices. Or more to the point for today, has previously only been available for iOS devices. A new iMessage app has recently landed in the Play Store — but there is a catch.

To start, the iMessage app is not from Apple. This makes it an unofficial release, but there is still a bit more to the story. The warning comes by way of Jay Freeman (saurik) who has said that all of the message data is being handled through a server in China. Freeman has said that as far as he can tell, “the way it works is that the client does directly connect to Apple, but the data is all processed on the developer’s server in China.”

This means that someone using this app will have their message sent from their device to a third-party server in China (which makes it appear to have come from an Apple device) and then sends the message. Basically, those using the app should consider themselves warned about how the app is actually handling these messages. And to further that, you will be required to have an Apple ID, which means giving up a username and password, but remember — those accounts often have other more personal details attached.

The other aspect here is that Apple may get wise to this and figure out a way to shut them down. Needless to say, the iMessage app for Android is free so you would not be losing out on the app purchase. As for the app itself, the developer has said the primary purpose is to allow everyone to be able to chat using iMessage for free. Otherwise, the app allows the user to send and receive messages and offers goodies such as a read and typing status notifications.

Anyway, those warnings and findings aside, those who want to move forward and begin chatting with their iOS using friends can use this Google Play Store link to download the app.

LG G2 given global sales goal of 10 million
Sep 24th 2013, 13:31, by Robert Nelson

There had been some early talk of LG hoping to reach 10 million in sales for the G2 smartphone, however it wasn’t until today that the goal was officially confirmed from someone within the company. LG had a launch event for the G2 earlier today in Taiwan and discussed the global sales goal as well as what they are hoping to see in terms of sales within Taiwan.

Up first, the global sales number and as the earlier chatter had suggested — LG is indeed hoping to see 10 million in unit sales from the G2. As for Taiwan, they have set the sales goal within the country at 20,000 units per month with a further goal of seeing a 5 percent market share for smartphones and a 10 percent market share amongst the high-end devices.

The LG G2 has been getting solid reviews thus far and with the widespread availability around the world, it seems like that 10 million number may be more a matter of when as opposed to if. Of course, time will tell how accurate these goals are. In the meantime, we look towards the handset itself which has a solid set of specs along with a unique placement in terms of the buttons.

As we shown in our earlier review and hands-on posts with the G2, those buttons are located on the back of the handset, just below the camera lens. Otherwise, the LG G2 sports a 5.2-inch 1080p HD display along with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 3000 mAh battery and 13 megapixel camera with optical image stabilization. The handset is also running Android 4.2.2 with more than a handful of LG specific features and customizations.
