Samsung to unveil new 10.1-inch tablet, cloud services on May 3?

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 01:57 PM PDT

Word on the street this afternoon is that Samsung will be unveiling yet another Android-based tablet at their May 3 Unpacked event.  According to "sources familiar with the matter", Samsung is readying a dual-core Galaxy Tab with a 10.1-inch display.  And no, this is not the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1  -- that's said to be getting tweaked to include quad-core CPU before it arrives.

As to what this device will be and what's it's called remains to be seen, however this will probably lead to confusion among consumers.  When it's all said and done, we're hoping for a low-cost alternative to lesser known brands.

Also rumored to be on the agenda for May 3rd is a Samsung cloud service for file storage.  Much like Apple has with their iCloud service, Samsung would allow for users to back up files with a minimum of 5GB of storage.  It's unclear as to whether additional, larger options will be available at a premium however we'd certainly hope so.  While nothing has been outlined in an official capacity, it's suggested that Samsung's service would not limit the types of files backed up, opening the door to more than just photos and videos.

HTC not focusing on QWERTY keyboards or high capacity batteries

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 01:38 PM PDT

Don't look for HTC to rush into a true successor to the QWERTY-based T-Mobile G2 anytime soon.  What's more, you shouldn't expect to see them offer up a Droid Razr Maxx-like battery for any of their future models. As part of their decisions to slow down on the number of handsets, HTC wants to make every single effort count.  That means giving the fans exactly what they want.

According to studies conducted in late 2011, consumers would rather have a thin phone than one that features, say, a 3300mAh battery.  It's too bad we were not part of the focus group because we feel the exact opposite on this matter.

Speaking at a press event in Seattle, HTC's creative director, Claude Zellweger advised that the company was moving toward a touch-only form factor for future devices. Instead of spending time and effort on new designs, HTC would rather focus on services and the on-screen keyboard.

As a company the QWERTY keyboard we're moving away from in general...We feel that putting too much effort into that [QWERTY] would take away from our devices.

Now this doesn't exactly mean the days of the sliding keyboard are over for HTC.  Rather, this is just their way of saying that they're not in a hurry to put one together.

You Tell Us

How do you feel about this decision?  Were you hoping to replace your next handset with a QWERTY keyboard smartphone or have you gone all-in with touch devices?

Five for Friday: Apps for gossip hounds and rumormongers

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 12:46 PM PDT

Are you one who likes to Keep up with the Kardashians?  Ever find yourself paging through magazines when standing in line at the grocery store checkout?  We've got some Android apps that you might be interested in checking out.  These are titles that will help out, whether you want to follow movie stars, musicians, television actors, or real housewives.

While we recognize that there are other apps out there, or that you have your own favorites, these five make a great jumping off point.  This is not a partial list or one with bias, rather it's five apps to get you going in the right direction.  This is where we turn to you and ask that you add your titles to the comments below.  This way other Android users can discover the stuff that we may overlook or omit.

This week's topic: Apps for gossip hounds and rumormongers

People Celeb News

Perhaps one of the more "reputable" sources for celebrity news, People gives readers access to up-to-the minute breaking news, photos, biographies, and more. Featuring a clean and intuitive interface, People Celeb News tracks who is doing what, and where they are going.  For those of you who only have a few minutes to kill, you'll enjoy the Top 5, which is a constantly monitored and updated list of the five most read articles.

TMZ

On the other end of the spectrum we have TMZ and their approach to celebrity tracking.  This one is available in a smartphone and tablet-optimized versions and provides access to high-quality videos and photos.  We wouldn't expect anything else from a company that specializes in tossing cameras into the faces of celebrities.  Didn't set your DVR for last night's episode?  No worries, you can watch them with the app.  What's more, you can also get your fix of uncut footage as well!

E! Online

From the network that brings us The Soup, Keeping up with the Kardashians, and Chelsea Lately, comes the official E! Online application.  As one might expect, the app gives users access to all the major shows and the news that comes with them.  Use the "My Celebs" feature and create a personalized news page for following your favorite celebrities and ensure you always know what's going on.  Watch videos and view photos of celebs and share them with friends over social networks like Facebook and Twitter!

The Soup

Get your Joel McHale on with the popular E! series' official application.  Relive some of the show's funnest moments with the "Hall of Fame", including exclusive footage of Stains the Dog and Spaghetti Cat.  Additional details include hilarious videos, photos, and tweets from around the world, all based around celebrities and their outrageous antics.  A perfect compliment to the weekly show, the free app also provides digital content that doesn't make it to television.

Celebrity GossApp

Of all the apps listed on this Five for Friday, this one is not affiliated with any particular news outlet or blog.  No, this one pulls information from nearly every major blog, magazine, and celebrity news source.  Why bother visiting a bunch of websites or bookmarks when you can follow them all in one place?  Celebrity GossApp combines news from places such as Gawker, Perez Hilton, Radar, The Superficial, and more.  At last check, we counted nearly four dozen sources of gossip, news, and other celebrity-related goings-on.

Your Turn!

What app(s) are you using to keep up with your favorite celebrities and stars?  Let us know what your preferred gossip app is by leaving a comment below!

Samsung Galaxy S III found hiding in Vietnam

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 07:59 AM PDT

We're less than two weeks away from Samsung unveiling the Galaxy S III so it should come as no surprise if we were to see a series of rapid leaks. And why not? Someone, somewhere, has to be testing the coveted handset in the wild.  The latest, and perhaps most legitimate, leak seems to indicate that the Galaxy S III is in Vietnam and hiding in plastic shell.

Tech site Tinhte is reporting that they have received a GT-I9300 and even recorded a video to prove it. According to them, the Galaxy S III has a 4.6-inch display with 1184X720p resolution (~320ppi), a 1.4GHz quad-core CPU, Android 4.0.3, 1GB RAM, and 16GB storage.  Additional details include microSD expansion card slot and a 2050mAh battery with NFC support.

Engadget reached out to Samsung to see if they would shed some light on the new details and found the handset maker naturally coy.

"We will be able to tell you more at the 2012 Samsung Mobile Unpacked."

As excited as we are about these details, we cannot wait to see what Samsung gives us on May 3rd.  If not because of how awesome the phone will be, but because we're tired of so many rumors hitting the internet.

In covering Android news over the last four and half years we've discovered that there are plenty of users out there who love to beta test.  Be it a game, an app, or accessory, there is always a group of folks who like to be ahead of the curve and shape the future of things to come.  If you count yourself among this bunch of Android users then you will be happy with this edition of "In Brief".  Today's collection is seven ways to participate in an Android-related beta program.

  • Playup - Although they only recently brought their "mobile-based social network for sport fans" to Android this month, users can always test the beta mobile browser version.  If you're a sports fan who likes to chat during games, then you're advised to download the app and/or participate in the web client.
  • Softmaker Office - The full version is coming to Android soon but you can be on the front with this beta application.  Need to edit Office files from your smartphone or tablet?  This one provides seamless support with Microsoft Office 2010 formats and includes a word processor, spreadsheet, and presentations client.
  • IM+ - Test the newest features from the all-in-one messaging client and you'll have options such as a black graphic theme (night reading) ability to not show ICQ "On Mobile", and more. Download and try IM+ v 6.1.9 beta.

  • SwiftKey - Always available in beta form, we simply love this keyboard for Android devices.  Sign up and test out the last enhancements well ahead of it hitting the Google Play Store. Currently available in SwiftKey 3 beta are features such as learned word backups, a larger space bar, a smarter language engine, and smarter punctuation!
  • Trend Micro - The popular security guys have an app in the Google Play Store that is still considered beta.  Download and try out the Longevity Battery Saver and extend the life of your smartphone or tablet battery.

Verizon to issue ICS to Xoom, Rezound over next few weeks

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Months after the Wi-Fi Motorola Xoom received its Android 4.0 update, Verizon's 3G/4G model is slated to pick up Ice Cream Sandwich.  According to details picked up by Droid Life, the Honeycomb-powered tablet is slated to grab 4.0 as soon as next Monday, April 23rd.  Jumping forward a couple of weeks, the HTC Rezound is allegedly getting its own Android 4.0 update on May 9th.  Should these prove legit, we can expect to see a slow trickle across the country as users (most likely) notified of the new tasty dessert.

PressReader 4.0 arrives with new look, new features

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 12:00 PM PDT

NewspaperDirect has dropped a brand new version of their popular newspaper application, PressReader, into Google Play this afternoon.  Featuring a fresh new look with more graphics and details, the 4.0 release is also noteworthy for two new reasons.  First up, the app displays magazines and newspapers in a much quicker and sharper manner.  As something that somewhat troubled us in the past, it felt like we were merely looking at giant PDF or JPEG files of sources.  Not any more, these load very fast and look extremely sharp.

The second, and perhaps coolest, feature is the new SmartFlow technology that allows for landscape reading of articles.  As nice as newspapers look spread out in portrait mode, most times we like to read in landscape with a tablet stand or holding in hands.  SmartFlow optimizes articles in an intuitive manner that feels comfortable, letting users swipe from article to article rather than closing to return to the home page or previous place in the newspaper.  Looking at this I get the sense that much of what I read would work well in this framework, including blogs, rss, and other sources.

I'm really loving the slight color adjustments, gradients, and other aesthetic touch as it feels more app-like and less "here's a giant scanned copy of your newspaper".  As much as I liked the previous iterations of PressReader, I've already fallen in love with the 4.0 version in the short time I have used it.

PressReader is a free application to download and use, however it requires a subscription to access your magazines and newspapers.  To that end, there are two options available for users to choose from.  One can download issues or newspapers individually at 99¢ each or subscribe to a monthly $29.95 all-you-can-eat plan with access to all materials.  Considering there are more than 2,300 sources from across 95 countries this is well worth the price of admission, especially with those who love more than one newspaper.  Also worth pointing out is that PressReader allows for 54 languages from around the world, adding to the value for international travelers and emigrants.

Download PressReader from Google Play and check out the free trial!
