NVIDIA SHIELD will ship July 31
Jul 21st 2013, 15:26, by Sean Riley

As you most likely recall NVIDIA’s new handheld was originally slated to launch on June 27th and literally just a day before launch they were forced to call it off due to a mechanical issue.

The announcement at the time was simply that the new launch date would be in July, but no definite date was given. As we progressed through most of July without an update from NVIDIA it seemed increasingly unlikely that they would hit their new timeline, but today NVIDIA has finally ended their silence in an e-mail to SHIELD pre-orderers which pegged July 31st as the new launch date.

"We want to thank you for your patience and for sticking with us through the shipment delay of your SHIELD. We have great news to share with you – your SHIELD will ship on July 31st.

Our goal has always been to ship the perfect product, so we made sure we submitted SHIELD to the most rigorous mechanical testing and quality assurance standards in the industry. We built SHIELD because we love playing games, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do."

Suffice to say the extra month wasn’t something that either NVIDIA or those with SHIELD pre-orders were pleased about, however long term this was clearly a better move for NVIDIA than saddling early adopters with flawed hardware. If they wanted to do that they should have launched it through Kickstarter.

Between the price drop and the delay

We’ll have our review of SHIELD in the coming weeks, but just as a reminder if you happen to live in NYC or the bay area you can get an early look at SHIELD in participating theaters.
