Sony Xperia Z1

The regular Sony Xperia Z1.

We first caught wind of the rumored Xperia Z1 mini back when it was still known as the “Sony Honami mini” and it was rumored to finally be the smaller version of a powerhouse smartphone which retained the high-end specs of its big brother. Today, another leak has come out which seems to confirm those high-end specs in a much more pocketable version of the Xperia Z1.

In a purported brochure for Japanese carrier NTT Docomo, the Xperia Z1 mini is compared against the Xperia Z1 revealing very similar specifications. While this could still be a fake, it looks to be very convincing.

Xperia Z1 mini leak

While my Japanese isn’t as good as it used to be (okay, it was never any good), we can still decipher that the Xperia Z1 mini matches the larger Xperia Z1 in many aspects including the processor, RAM and camera.

The Xperia Z1 mini is said to retain the quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2 GHz, as well as the 20.7MP G Lens camera, IP 58 rated dust and water resistance and 2GB RAM found in the Xperia Z1.  The differences come in screen size, where the Xperia Z1 mini houses a 4.3-inch (1280×720) display and a smaller 2300mAh battery.

With a rather large frame for its screen size, the Xperia Z1 mini looks to retain the large bezels of its big brother, but those great specs make up for it.

The Xperia Z1 mini is running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with the Xperia UI on top and will come in four colors (black, white, pink and yellow). The dimensions on the smartphone don’t seem to be very small with a 4.3-inch display, the 127 x 64.9 x 9.4mm body is much smaller than the Xperia Z1′s 144 x 74 x 8.5mm frame, but compared to other mini variants of high-end handsets (like the 124.6 x 61.3 x 8.9 mm frame on the Galaxy S4 Mini), it’s not quite the smallest device on the block. That means that the rather large bezels on the Xperia Z1 look to have been transferred to the Xperia Z1 mini, but we’re sure those high-end specs make up for it.

Remember, these are all unconfirmed rumors, so take it all in with a grain of salt. There’s also no release date to speak of yet, but we don’t think it could be too long of a wait for those of you looking for a smaller high-end Android handset.

Are you looking forward to the Xperia Z1 mini? Is this finally the high-end smaller Android handset we’ve been waiting for?
