Sidekick 4G retired but Sidekick line will live on

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 11:58 AM PDT

T-Mobile USA has confirmed with PhoneScoop that the Samsung-designed Sidekick 4G has been retired.  This doesn't definitively mean that the brand has been given the axe though as  T-Mobile was quick to clear the air.

...Sidekick 4G...retired (but)...it doesn't mean we are discontinuing the T-Mobile Sidekick line."

It will be interesting to see if or when the Sidekick returns now that we've become so enamored in touch-only devices.   Will it ever find its way back to the top of the heap where it was once considered a killer handset experience?

Gmail video chat becomes Google+ Hangout

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 11:26 AM PDT

Google has taken yet another step toward meshing Google+ features with other apps and services today, announcing the end of Google Video Chat for Gmail.  Available immediately, the experience works across all Gmail users, not just for those who use Google+.  Of course, there are different experiences to be had if you use both services, such as collaboration on documents, watching YouTube together, and more.

All Gmail users will benefit from this upgrade, but if you and the person you're chatting with also use Google+, you'll get even more from the Hangouts experience. You'll be able to video chat with up to nine people at once, watch YouTube videos together, collaborate on Google documents and share your screen. Plus, Hangouts has a bunch of fun effects that you can try out...because any conversation is better when you're wearing a virtual mustache or pirate hat.

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 09:59 AM PDT

Yet another Sprint and ZTE collaboration has been unearthed, in the form of a 4.5-inch, 4G LTE-ready Android known as the Flash.  Rumored to arrive this fall (October 14), the ZTE Flash is listed as having a 4.5-inch IPS display (1280x720), a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, a 12.6-inch megapixel rear camera, and front-facing 1-megapixel camera.  Running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the smartphone also features your requisite Android connectivity (Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, etc). If history is an indicator, we should anticipate a pretty affordable experience out of ZTE when it touches down.

What's your gut reaction when you see the phone and rumored specs?  Ready for a 12.6-megapixel camera?

HTC closes South Korea office due to slow sales, Samsung hurting profits

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 05:01 AM PDT

HTC has announced that they will be closing their office in South Korea. The company recently showed slow sales in the country, thanks to Samsung. According to analysts, HTC has dropped to a measly 1% market share in SK during the first quarter, which is down from a mere 2% in 2011. One may think the market share has diversified to such a degree that 2% might be acceptable in that region, but think again; Samsung is estimated to have as much as 70% of the market by the end of this month, due in no small way to the launch of the Galaxy S III.

HTC has been finding it harder to make profit over the past 4-6 months, which is after a record earnings report in 2011. To bring the situation to light, HTC has experienced a 57.8% fall, year-on-year, in net profits during Q2 of 2012, which the comp-any has blamed on poor sales figures in the European market of the HTC One series. The company also blames Apple and the litigation that delayed the U.S. launch of the phone

Samsung may be poised to produce 350 ppi OLED displays

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 04:50 AM PDT

If you've got an OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) screen, then you may be aware of one of the drawbacks: OLED screens cannot be manufactured to have the pixel density that LCD screens can. This makes devices that use LED screens a slight bit more defined and crisp, such as the HTC One X.

However, that may soon not be the case with Samsung, as there are reports coming from Korea that state that Samsung is ready to use their new FMM (Fine Metal Mask) production process, which would allow displays that can handle up to 350 ppi (pixels per inch). If you find yourself asking what that would end up looking like, here's a comparison: the iPhone 4S "retina display" that Apple's raved about since inception? That's 326 ppi. The more pixels per inch, the more room there is to sharpen images at a small scale, making them crisp and clean to the user.

Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments.
