HTC One officially launches with C Spire Wireless
Aug 15th 2013, 15:53, by Robert Nelson

C Spire Wireless announced the upcoming availability of the HTC One back in mid-June. At the time they mentioned how “more details would be shared in the near future.” Well, it looks like that near future timeline has finally arrived and as of today, the HTC One is available with C Spire.

The handset has arrived priced at $199.99 with a two-year agreement and will be available online and with all C Spire Wireless retail stores. Those planning to make a purchase will be able to pair the handset with the new unlimited plans which range in price from $50, to $80 and top out at $100 per month.

While the specs remain the same as what we have seen with other carrier branded HTC One models, the C Spire version does have a few add-on apps that are pre-installed. The apps include Text CS and WiFiON. The first is a customer service app and the second will help you find WiFi hotspots while out and about. The WiFiON app will help you to connect with a network of more than 12 million hotspots.

Otherwise, the HTC One sports a 4.7-inch 1080p display (at 468ppi) with a quad-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon 600 processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, a 2300 mAh battery and Jelly Bean with the Sense user interface on top. As we have seen, the Sense user interface means goodies such as BlinkFeed and BoomSound as well as Sense TV and Zoe.

Basically, the release of the HTC One just further rounds out the carrier availability. Of course, many will realize we are still waiting on word from one carrier. That carrier is Verizon who done little more than launch a coming soon style teaser page with word the handset would arrive sometime this summer.

For those curious and looking for more information, we have spent some hands-on time with the HTC One and have an earlier published review, as well as a review with the AT&T branded model.

Sony Honami leak brings talk of 4K video
Aug 15th 2013, 15:24, by Robert Nelson

We recently got a first look at the Sony Honami in white. Those images appeared yesterday and it looks like they have been followed up with another image. This latest leaked image has a white Honami sitting side-by-side with a purple Xperia Z. Perhaps more exciting than another leaked image, there was also talk of the Honami being able to capture 4K video.

This video related bit comes by way of an image of a presentation slide. The image has been spotted on the Chinese language Digi-wo site. While this is an interesting tidbit for the Honami, it is one that we are a bit cautious about. The presentation slide appears to be the real deal, but the 4000 x 2000 resolution seems to be a bit off.

Well, not off, just not necessarily exact. That said, other details on the slide appear to lineup with what we have been seeing with earlier leaks. For example, the slide brings talk of the 20.7 megapixel rear-facing camera as well as mentions of the Bravia and Exmor R branding.

This all ties back with details we saw yesterday, which also included how the rear-facing camera would be sporting a 1/2.3 sensor. Otherwise, some of the still rumored specs include a 1920 x 1080 display resolution, Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM along with 16GB of internal storage, a 3000 mAh battery and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

While we have been talking about leaked images and spec rumors for quite some time now, it seems like this could all be made official sooner rather than later. Sony recently confirmed an event for September 4th during IFA. And remember, we will be live on-site in Berlin to bring the latest.

Samsung Galaxy S II TV unveiled with ISDB-T receiver
Aug 15th 2013, 14:47, by Robert Nelson

Samsung has unveiled a new handset sporting what will be a name that is familiar to many. The handset is the Galaxy S II TV, but despite the familiar name, this is a new device with a new look and updated specs. As the TV in the name implies, this handset will arrive sporting a ISDB-T receiver for watching television while out and about.

That brings us to where this handset will be released. As we often see with handsets that feature a built-in TV tuner — this one will not be arriving for sale in the US. Instead Samsung has the Galaxy S II TV available for Brazil. The handset will feature a 4-inch WVGA (800 x 480) display, dual-core 1GHz processor, 4GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, 1500 mAh battery and 5 megapixel rear-facing camera.

There will also be a VGA quality front-facing camera as well as the basics such as WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, GPS and 3.5mm headphone jack. Otherwise, the handset will arrive running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with Samsung’s ToucWiz user interface sitting on top. Basically, that means you can also expect Samsung apps such as Sound & Shot, S Translator and S Travel (just to name a few).

Samsung is also marketing the Galaxy S II TV as a Duos-branded handset which means there will be a version with support for two SIM cards. Bottom line here, Samsung has released a new handset with new looks that shares a name with an older model smartphone. Of course, due to the inclusion of the ISDB-T receiver we aren’t expecting a widespread release for this particular handset.

Dots game arrives for Android, brings new moves based mode
Aug 15th 2013, 14:16, by Robert Nelson

Betaworks is a name that some may recognize from services such as Bitly, Digg and Instapaper. But in addition to those, Betaworks has also had a rather popular game that was available only to iOS users. That game is called Dots and as of today it has arrived for Android users.

The game is available for free and can be found in the Google Play Store and the Amazon Appstore. With that in mind, we should also offer the warning about how it is easy to pick and hard to put down. The idea behind Dots is simple, you are presented with a grid layout of colored dots and you have to connect as many of the same-colored dots as you can.

You play each round for 60 seconds and can also bring in the social side by connecting your Facebook and/or Twitter accounts. There is also a multi-player option which has you playing a board and then passing it over to a friend for a one-on-one competition of sorts. Aside from the gameplay that had been available for iOS Dots players, the Android release has also brought a new feature.

That new feature is an un-timed moves based mode called Moves. The one catch with Moves, while the time restriction has been removed, there is a limit of 30 moves per game. Otherwise, Dots has 25 challenges that you can unlock to get trophies.

Taking that a step further and those trophies also award you with bonus dots. And for those who are slightly more competitive in terms of games, the harder the challenge the more dots you can earn. Dots for Android requires Android 2.2 or later and will run equally well on a tablet or smartphone.
