You know that great pattern unlock feature that has been standard in Android since the first release? Pretty sweet, right? The downside of this security is that you cannot launch directly into any particular apps, only the home screen. A newly discovered Google patent suggests we might soon see the best of both worlds.

The patent, should it become standard or part of Android, will allow users to unlock their device with multiple custom patterns. Each pattern could, in turn, launch directly into an app such as the camera, Gmail, dialer, etc.

It’s not clear if this is Google’s plan to release this or integrate into Android; for all we know, it could be a simple squat so that others cannot claim the patent. Then again, this would be a cool feature to introdce as part of the 5.0 version of Android, right?
