Battlefield, one of the most popular game franchises, may soon include a high quality mobile game.

The long-running Battlefield series is published by Electronic Arts (EA) and developed by Swedish studio DICE. Talking to the New York Times, EA Labels president Frank Gibeau discussed the possibility of translating the gaming experience of AAA console titles to the smaller screens of mobile devices.

Gibeau mentioned that the Commander Mode in the upcoming Battlefield 4 will be playable on tablets, allowing virtual tacticians to lead their teams on the go. But EA is preparing a full mobile title in the Battlefield franchise that will be, in the words of Frank Gibeau, "high-end and high-performance." The executive went on to tease some form of cross-platform gaming:

But we're embarking on something no one has ever done before — to get these games to inter-operate between platforms. Will it work? It already has in some cases. Will it work for all franchises? Not all franchises will make the transition. Battlefield might be a little harder.

While true console-quality gaming on mobile devices is probably still a few years away, the technology is evolving at a steady pace in that direction. EA's future Battlefield mobile game may run on Frostbite Go, the mobile version of the Frostbite 3 engine that powers Battlefield 4. On the hardware side, Nvidia recently demoed Logan, a Kepler-based mobile GPU that will bring feature parity between mobile devices, consoles, and PCs, greatly simplifying cross platform game development.

Battlefield 4 will launch at the end of the month, and it's possible that EA will publish any mobile tie-ins around the same time.
