Google Play Store 4.4 download is available
Oct 21st 2013, 22:22, by Nate Swanner

If you're into side-loading apps, and interested in the new Play Store, this one is for you. Android Police have mirrored the Play Store 4.4 release, and have it available for download. As the story unfolds, not much is known yet, but this is fresh news so we expect to see more as the days go by.

As noted previously, we'll get the gesture-based menu navigation. Rather than a drop-down, the new Play Store will get the slide-out navigation we see with so many other Google apps like GMail. A welcome change, and it brings the Play Store closer to center in regard to design guidelines.

The newest Play Store also features a lot of the Newsstand language we've heard about, as well as the new icon for Newsstand. While this service is not yet available, we look for it to launch on the 24th, when Google is holding their Play Store even in New York City.

Again, it's all very new and not technically official, but worth a shot if you're comfortable doing so. Android Police has made it available via a mirror download, so grab it while you can!

Project Shield 2 may be here sooner than we think, hints NVIDIA CEO
Oct 21st 2013, 22:07, by Nate Swanner

As Project Shield became a reality, we became enamored. While the handheld stakes it's place amongst the new crop of Android gaming consoles, there could be a follow-up sooner than you'd think. NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang spoke with Engadget after the announcement, and tipped his hat on a few things in the works.

First, Huang noted that the next Tegra chip is already in the works. Dubbed Project Logan (Wolverine?), Huang says it the new Tegra chip has "all the architectural sophistication you see in a PC." He also notes it's based on exactly the same architecture as NVIDIA's GeForce Titan GPU, which has been well received.

In terms of the next Project Shield console, Huang says we should expect a new device roughly the same time we see a new Tegra chipset from NVIDIA. Essentially, he's telling us that their gaming console is meant to showcase the Tegra chip, so we'll be excited to see the tandem of new NVIDIA goodies next year.

With the likes of Qualcomm and their Snapdragon franchise taking off, NVIDIA has had a rough go getting their latest and greatest to catch on. Their Tegra 4 and 4i went nearly unused by major OEMs domestically, but the Xiaomi Mi3 — which sold out in 90 seconds — is using it.

Samsung Galaxy S5 could get 16MP shooter, perhaps made by Sony
Oct 21st 2013, 21:13, by Nate Swanner

Samsung's newest addition to their Galaxy S flagship line, which we can safely assume will be called the S5, is rumored to launch in January. While we don't have much to go on, rumors regarding the device have been leaking since the S4 came out this summer. Now, we're hearing the camera may get a slight update.

Korean website ETNews is reporting that the S5 will see a 16MP shooter on the back, which is a slight bump from the 13MP camera on board now. We previously heard rumors that the 13MP would stick, and would be updated with an OIS, so we're not quite sure what to make of this yet.

Interestingly, Samsung may be looking to go outside their camp for the hardware as well. The report also suggests that Samsung may ask Sony to provide the camera for them, rather than use the cameras they develop in-house.

Of course, like so many rumors floating around, ETNews is using the familiar "sources close to the matter" for this information. As we've seen from other devices in recent history — like the HTC One or Moto X — hardware doesn't always tell the whole story. In the age of great mobile photography, what Samsung does on the software side is just as important as the hardware.
