In a possible break from their single letter naming scheme for new devices, Sony has filed to trademark the name “Xperia Sola” with the U.S. Trademark and Patents Office. This comes at the heels of the announcement of the Xperia Ion, Sony’s first U.S. bound smartphone.
Could it be one of the mysterious devices in the leaked 2012 roadmap from last month? Maybe. Maybe not. Sometimes companies register trademarks that they never end up using, though considering Sony’s attachment to the Xperia name, I would bet on it becoming a reality.
In Spanish, the word sola is the feminine form of the word solo, or “alone”. Could this be a hint? Anyone have any predictions as to what this could turn out to be?

Does a certain Huawei phone think it can quietly get FCC approval and not show up on our radars? Not at Talk Android folks. We already have the interesting Huawei Honor here in the States (under the name of the Huawei Mercury for US Cellular), but a variation of the phone will possibly be arriving with some new threads underneath. The Huawei Honor has gotten the OK from the FCC and will be on its way as a GSM version– sporting WCDMA 850/1900 bands. This indicates the device would likely be part of AT&T’s lineup, that is if AT&T wants to even sell the device in its stores. Of course since the Honor will likely be among the first Huawei devices with Ice Cream Sandwich, it would definitely be a phone of interest for AT&T.
The phone has some impressive specs too. Under the hood, you’ll find a 1.4GHz single-core processor, 4-inch FWVGA (854 x 480) display, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal memory and a 8MP camera with a front-facing camera included. Of course Ice Cream Sandwich is only available on the Honor in the Chinese markets, but you can expect an immediate update for all markets shortly after. No further details for now, so stay tuned with Talk Android as we provide more updates on the device.

Choice is always good, and Japan’s Fujitsu has a new seven-inch Android tablet to add to the selection.  The Stylistic M350/CA2 will run for six hours, and weighs in at 420 grams.  It boasts a Wide Super VGA (WSVGA) display with 1024×600 pixel resolution. Interestingly, users can select between a numeric keypad input, QWERTY input, and hand-written input. Perhaps the hand-written input will need the use of a stylus; hopefully more details on that will emerge. The Stylistic will work perfectly as an e-book reader, a sales terminal, and for retail stores looking to display their catalogs. It will also benefit the business person, since it includes a Bluetooth v2.1 data connection, and a miniHDMI for an image output to projectors. This new tablet will be available in Japan in mid-February. Skip over the break for the full press release.

With its high-resolution 7-inch WSVGA (1024 x 600 pixel) display, the compact and lightweight body of approximately 420g makes it easy to hold and operate with just one hand. This and its lengthy running time of approximately 6.1 hours make it ideal for applications that require mobility.

This project has been a bit of a slow burner for Google. We reported early in 2011 that the US Military was looking into Android and a Dell Android 2.2 build gained military approval late in 2011. This recent news  is a clear indication of the progress being made in what has long been a market dominated by RIM devices and software
The specially modified version of Android has been designed to run on commercially available smartphones, a move that will keep costs down whilst allowing the government to upgrade to that shiny new Galaxy SIII when it finally arrives!
US soldiers will be the first to receive these devices, having been involved in the project from the early stages. Federal agencies will then receive the second batch of phones for sending and receiving confidential government informations whilst on the move.
Currently, US Government and Military workers are not permitted to use smartphones for sending classified information as (up until now) there has been no devices that have met the high security certifications. There’s hardly a week that goes by without a high profile, blue chip organization finding their data compromised by the likes of wikileaks or some other anonymous source. With this in mind, it’s absolutely imperative that the Government is more vigilant than ever before.
Michael McCarthy, director for the Army’s Brigade Modernization Command has been overseeing the testing of touchscreen devices for over 2 years now. He confirmed that his division shipped over 40 phones to overseas fighters last year with another 50 phones and 75 tablets due to be shipped in March of this year.

This is a big day for ROM developers everywhere as Xiaomi, a Chinese technology company, has open sourced its MIUI ROM for Android. For those that live under a rock, MIUI gives Android an iOS flair in both look and feel and is based on both Android 2.3.7 and CyanogenMod 7 sources. MIUI 4 (based on Ice Cream Sandwich) is even being toted as extremely stable on the Galaxy S II. You can check out our review on an earlier version here. It’s even safe to say that it’s one of the more popular ROMs out there.
If you are wanting to take a stab at the code you can swing on over to the Github where you will find several application and ROM source codes uploaded. While it may not be all of them you can certainly bet we’ll see more source codes pop up in the near future. Enjoy!

With SuperBowl XLVI so close that you can smell the sweat off anxious fans, EA has put its latest Madden installment on sale on the Android Market for $0.99. At $4 less than its usual retail price, some virtual NFL aficionados might rejoice, though some might still have a sour taste in their mouth from previous EA games not pulling the same weight their iOS counterparts have. Unfortunately the Android version of Madden 12 apple hasn’t fallen too far from the tree as some users are reporting download issues, on top of incompatibility with newer phones like the Galaxy Nexus.
All-in-all a buck isn’t too bad for an EA game, regardless of it’s flaws. Give it a shot and tell us if you run into any of the issues other users are reporting.

Last year we saw the LG Optimus LTE get launched on Bell Mobility, and now it looks as if the flagship device is headed to TELUS as well. The Canadian carrier’s website has outed the device as model number LTE P935, which varies slightly from Bell’s P930 model number. To you U.S. folks, you might be more familiar with the device as the LG Nitro HD which launched on AT&T late last year. Also, LG recently announced that the device has already sold over 1 million units worldwide.
We don’t have any pricing or availability yet because TELUS has yet to announce the device’s official confirmation. When it does, you can probably expect the price to fall somewhere around $99 on contract just to be competitive with their rival Bell Mobility. Stay tuned because as soon as we hear more we will definitely let you know.

I don’t know, maybe you’re familiar with this, but recently Woot.com had a sale on refurbished Motorola Xoom tablets and not surprisingly people didn’t waste any time clearing them out. According to Moto, a batch of 100 Xoom Wi-Fi tablets sold between October and December 2011 on Woot weren’t properly refurbished. Say what?! Yeah. Apparently Moto failed to do a proper factory reset of those devices and the folks who re-purchased them were surprised to find that the previous owners info was still embedded on the tablet. Not only was their personal info on them, pictures, documents and passwords remained as well. So, If you returned a Xoom tablet between March and October of 2011 you may want to pay attention because your info could potentially be on one of those devices.
Motorola issued a statement earlier today in an attempt to resolve this embarrassing mistake. They are willing to give potentially affected customers 2-years of Experian ProtectMyID for free. So for those of you who returned a Xoom Wi-Fi to Amazon, Best Buy, BJ’s Wholesale, eBay, Office Max, Radio Shack, Sam’s Club, or Staples between March and October, simply contact the Motorola Xoom Return site or Motorola support (1-800-734-5870) for your please-forgive-us offer. Sound fair to you? Fortunately only 100 out of 6,200 refurb units were affected so I guess it could have been worse.
If you think you may have been effected by this blunder, please let us know in the comments below. And if you want to read the official Motorola statement, jump past the break.

Motorola Mobility Notifies Certain Purchasers of Refurbished Motorola XOOM™ Wi-Fi Tablets of Refurbishment Process Error
Feb. 03, 2012
LIBERTYVILLE, Ill. – Feb. 3, 2012 – Motorola Mobility, Inc. today announced that it has recently learned that approximately 100 out of a batch of 6,200 Motorola XOOM™ Wi-Fi tablets that were refurbished by Motorola Mobility may not have been completely cleared of the original owner's data prior to resale. The affected tablets were resold by Woot.com between October and December 2011. While this matter likely affects only a small number of refurbished units, Motorola has a strong commitment to its consumers, and is proactively responding to mitigate any risk to its customers. Motorola has confirmed that any refurbished units sold outside the time period in question were properly refurbished.
The information that may be accessible to the purchasers of the impacted refurbished tablets may include any information that the original user elected to store on the tablet. It is possible that users might have stored photographs and documents. They may have also stored user names and passwords for email and social media accounts, as well as other password-protected sites and applications.
Motorola is offering customers who purchased and then returned a Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi tablet to Amazon.com, Best Buy, BJ's Wholesale, eBay, Office Max, Radio Shack, Sam's Club, or Staples and a few other independent retailers between March and October 2011 a complimentary two-year membership of Experian's ProtectMyID™ Alert to mitigate any risks. Original owners are advised to contact Experian at 1-866-926-9803 to sign up for the credit monitoring service. These original owners are also advised to take precautionary measures to protect their identity, such as changing their email and social media passwords. Original owners who performed a factory data reset prior to returning the device are not impacted.
In conjunction with today's announcement, Motorola is also actively pursuing the return of the impacted refurbished units to ensure that the memory of each device is cleared. Customers who purchased a refurbished Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi tablet from Woot.com between October and December 2011 are encouraged to visit motorola.com/xoomreturn or to call Motorola Mobility Customer Support at 1-800-734-5870, select Option 1, in order to determine if their tablet is affected.
Motorola sincerely regrets and apologizes for any inconvenience this situation has caused the affected customers. Motorola is committed to rigorous data protection practices in order to protect its customers, and will continue to take the necessary steps to achieve this objective.
